Yo Bear. I hope you have a great time. (Its a big enough State that I'm sure people will point you to good hiking away from danger).

Its amazing that whole fire started with one illegal camp fire.

Heard on NPR this morning, that about 2 million acres of Federal Parks & other Federal areas have been closed. I suggest you call ahead.

I believe there are (at least) two fires going right now. The one to the south of Denver was started by an illegal campfire (All banned right now). I heard today that the one west of Denver may have been started by a coal fire. Yes, a coal fire. Apparently it has been burning underground for years. And possibly because of the lack of moisture (i.e. ground water), it has reached the surface.

I was just looking at the fire danger numbers for CO. A lot of the reporting weather stations are showing thousand hour fuels (logs 3+ inches in diameter) in the single digit percent moisture content. For reference, the kiln-dried lumber in your local lumberyard is around 12%, so the forests are drier than the lumber in your lumberyard.

Colorado is a big place. I'm sure there's plenty of good hiking to be had. There wes lots of snow in the San Juans last month.

Jerbear
Do you have an e-mail address? I didn't see one under your username.

Are you coming this weekend? I'll need to know cuz I'm scheduled to play in golf tournaments this weekend and next. Don't let that discourage you from coming through Cody though.

Go here for maps and satellite imagery

And here for fire reports

That's the report dispensed to the public. For the in-house report go to:

http://www.nifc.gov/news/sitreprt.pdf

This one has more information but uses a lot of jargon.

I just got back from Denver last night.
The amount of smoke coming out of the fire south of the city is incredible--looks like L.A. on a bad day.
