Small Wilds TRView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 6 of 6 messages posted.
“Since I could not go on a backpacking trip over Saturday and Sunday, I decided to take advantage of the fact that I got off from work early Friday. I drove from Nashville to Foster Falls trailhead. (near Tracy City-where the titanium cookoff was last year) Hiked to Small Wilds in an hour, taking in the sights of the gorge along the way. Set up camp and did camp chores. The wood was damp from rain earlier in the day, so had a difficult time getting a fire started. Finally came up with the idea of using hand sanitizer on the wood since it has alcohol in it. It worked great! Right before sunset a raincloud passed overhead providing a light rain shower. It felt good getting slightly damp after working up a sweat breaking wood for a fire. Even with all the rain the region has been getting this spring, the creek was running slow. The best part of the trip was seeing the moon rise. It was a sliver shining brightly through the trees. The stars were out too. I heard several whip-or-wills during the night. Since I was alone and there was nothing to do, I went to bed at 9 p.m. Got a great night of sleep. Was up Sat. by nine and on the trail early. Stopped by Dutch Maid Bakery in Tracy City and bought a loaf of fresh bread. They bake on Saturdays. It was my first visit to the bakery and will not be my last. They have a wide variety of breads and baked goods. Had an uneventful drive home. Stopped at the Cracker Barrel in Manchester for a bite of lunch. This was my fist solo trip since last October. While it is good to get away once in awhile solo, I decided on this thrip that for me I think I enjoy hiking with other folks better. I think I am a socialable person more so than a loner. However, it was a great trip.” 9:39:32 PM 6/15/02 “Ya gotta love those small showers that pop up during the summer. I enjoy them mostly when I'm walking. Sounds like you had a good time. Thanks for the report.” 10:16:57 PM 6/15/02 “Sounds like you had a wonderful time, Katherine. :)” 4:10:24 PM 6/16/02 “Katibug, What a great post! Solo is one way of going, social is another. Each has its special merits and that is all there is to say. When I go solo, I find I experience more, but it is also great to share experiences with others. To start fires in wet weather, find a hemlock tree and gather a lot of the hair branches from the lower part of the tree. Roll these in balls and place a number of balls at the base of the fire below the kindling. Place thin shreds of bark above those, and thin twigs above that. Then graduate to thicker twigs and sticks. Those hair thin hemlock balls will usually get it going fast. If it's still too wet to catch, then resort to chemical means. Some folks carry steel wool to get fires going. It flares up dramatically, and at the base of what I've just described would get a fire going that would make a pyromaniac proud.” 4:39:48 PM 6/16/02 “THis is a test Blowjob” 8:10:51 AM 7/03/02 “Whooops. That one gets by the censors!!!! Color me red. Guess I won't ask my question on BB's advice column.” 8:11:43 AM 7/03/02
