ultra light question

“I finally bought the book to get serious about lightening up. Has anyone tried the sewing projects in the back of the book? Specifically the backpack, tarp and quilt. Any comments?”

“Try www.golite.com. They mass produce Ray Jardine's designs. I think they guarantee the products for life, too.”

“Thanks, I've looked. I sew and have a source for the necessary fabric. The money I could save by using the designs is worth the time.... If the designs are functional. Anyone tried them?”

“Personally no, but I do know of several AT thru-hikers that have made quilts and liked them.

Look around the net. There are several site where folks have built gear. Most of them seem to have gotten their start with reading Ray's book.”

“If you want to try a quilt,be prepared to learn to use it.The 20*F down quilt that is being made,requires a lot of clothing and head gear to really work at temps in the low 20's.the limits on the tarps,quilts and packs force the user to keep weight down and use good judgement as to using this gear.At most extreme conditions ,most of this gear ,leaves little room for error.”
