Avalanche Pass

“I'm planning on doing Avalanche Pass and Algonquin Peak from June 24 to 26. I will start off at Adirondak Loj and spend my last night at Marcy Dam. This is my first trip into the Adirondak's and I am expecting the black flies to be out. But they can't be any worse than two weeks ago at Algonquin Park. Does anyone have any suggestions or anything I should know about hiking this trail at this time of year?”

“The blackflies will be past-peak, but the skeeters'll be at peak and the deerflies'll be jes gittin' started. Wear a headnet and light colors (khaki or white) n' bring plenny of dope (fly dope, that is, but any other kinda dope can't hurt).

Where y'all gonna camp? Lake Colden is nice. And if yer lucky to have a breeze, the bugs mightn't be so bad.”

“Avalanche Pass is cool. At the height of the pass look for a stream of water running down the cliff. It feeds both the St. Lawrence and Hudson watersheds.
I call the pass and Avalanche Lake the Hall of the Mountain King, with due apologies to Edward Grieg.
Colden was a bear heaven my last few trips up there. Hang food high if you stay there!”

“One of my favorite vacations was spent up there doing various day hikes from the Loj. Didn't make the Marcy Peak (wife bailed out on me) but the hikes were great. Even spending money in Lake Placid was fun. I'd love to get back there some day. Enjoy your trekking!”
