Crazy Mikes Trip Report.

“is that your bacon ring or are you just happy to see me?”

“Hello everyone whats going on?Well the club had a turnout 5 this weekend as we did some nice backpacking in Hoosier National Forest.


Saturday.

I got to the Hickory Ridge Trailhead at 8:30 am and Gary was already there and waiting for the rest of the gang.The weather that day was overcast and there was a very good breeze blowing out from the South.As the rest of the gang showed up we left a note on the back of my car telling Rob where we were going to be setting up camp for the night becuase he was going to show up later.As we hit the trail most of all the leafs were littering the forest floor and there was a nice smell in the air.It had rained the night before so the creeks had water in them and the trail was kind of slick in some spots.There were lots of other backpackers out also enjoying the nice fall weekend that we ran into along the trail.We got to hear lots of birds and there still were a few bugs out but they were not a problem.After being on the trail for awhile we got to out spot that we were all going to call home for the night.We stayed by a nice pond with a fire ring and lots of prime spots for pitching a tent.Soon after getting camp set up we all had something to eat and then Rob showed up with his dog Bo Bo.After helping with all the camp jobs Gary too becuase he helped alot also with everyone we all got dinner going.As night got near we all got firewood and I got the fire going.After finishing my scotch and haveing a good time around the camp fire it was time to go to bed.During the night the skys became clear and a nice half moon was in the sky lighting everything up all around us.It was so nice to wake up and just look up into the night sky and see the stars and the moon it made me do lots of thinking soon after that I got back into my bivy and fell back asleep.Around 3 am some Barred Owls woke me up and soon after that I got a visit from a small wood mouse.He was cute he checked out all my stuff and then he checked me out and then he took off it was a nice to see a mouse so brave soon after that I feel back asleep.

Sunday.

Today we all got up and it was about 50 out.We got the fire going again to be warm while we all had brakefast.Once we were done eating we broke down camp and Rob's dog just had to take a dip in the pond to have a little bit of fun.Soon after that we hit the trail and made our way back to the trailhead and to our cars.Charley & Rob had the idea to climb the firetower to get some views and to take some pictures.After they got back down we all said our goodbyes and had headed for home.

“Nice report! It's pretty cool to hear about backpacking reports from places I've never even heard of! Hoosier National Forest? Well, at least we share the same moon and stars! Nice trip!”

“well, chin music showed up but willie didnt make it happen, and then we went in circles in garden of the gods, then we heard coyotes REAL close at 5 in the morning. then we walked the longest four miles ever.”

I once had a mouse fall asleep in between the space my neck and chin created while sleeping outside. It got down to about 40 degrees that night and he crawled into the space for warmth.”

Awwww. I used to have a pet mouse, haha. College dorms don't allow parrots.. I found that out, so instead I bought a 2 dollar mouse and named her..... Mouse.”

“It's true. It was the last day of a canoeing trip up in the Quetico. It night was perfect, a nice steady breeze and no bugs. I woke up at about 3am and as soon as I moved, the little guy took off. I kinda felt sorry. He was all nice and warm and I scarred him away.

The northern lights were dancing in the sky pretty good that night. Kinda glad I woke up.”

“I think all dogs are cool and I am no longer seeing OH posts and I just don't care anymore.

“Hello everyone whats going on?Well the club had a turnout of 3 this weekend as we did some of the Grubb Ridge Loop Trail to Patton Cave & Saddle Creek.

Saturday.

Me and Ms Cmb got to the Grubb Ridge Trailhead at 9:30 am and we met up with Chad aka RadioHead.He had already been doing some day hiking while waiting for us and was takeing a hot coco brake.After about 20 mins we put our packs on and hit the trail.It was a partly cloudy day with a cold breeze blowing in the air but as crazy as I am I still had shorts on with my gators.You could tell that winter was not far off becuase all the leaves were all off the trees and the sky had that winter look to it.There were lots of over backpackers out too no doubt to see the Lunar Eclipse that was going to happen later on that night.Well I had told RadioHead & Ms Cmb that I was going to take them to my favorite campsite by Patton Cave where we would also get a good view of the Lunar Eclipse that night but as it turns out there were other people that had the same idea in mind and had already taken the site which sucked but I took us down to Saddle Creek were I found a great site with a fire ring and lots of room too set up camp.Well after getting camp set up we all had a snack and I wanted to take a cat nap.Well Ms Cmb & RadioHead wanted to go see Patton Cave so I told them which way to go and off they went.Soon after they got back I got up and we made dinner and soon got a camp fire going.Not long after it got dark the clouds started to lift in the sky showing a great star show and soon we were going to see the Lunar Eclipse.The moon started to come up over a the hill that we were camped behind and we got a great view of the Lunar Eclipse.Soon after that we had gone to bed.Around 1 am Ms Cmb was cold so I switched sleeping bags with her and she was as snug as a bug in my bag which made me happy and her too...8)After going back to sleep I had to get up and pee and the moon was so bright and was lighting up everything that I took a nice brisk walk to see everything all lit up it was ver nice you did not even need a light.The moon beams seemed to dance throught the trees and made me feel good inside.Soon after that I got back into my sleeping bag and fell back asleep.

Sunday.

When we got up today there was frost all over everthing and the air was cold and crisp.I got the stove going and I had my cup of Joe and soon after that we broke down camp and hit the trail.Today it was a very clear day.The sky was so blue it was if you could write your name in the sky with clouds if you could.After about 2 hours of hiking we got back to the trailhead and took time to say our goodbyes and then went home.

“How come you did not have two bags that zipper together? She let you know that she was cold and all you did was switch sleeping bags with her. Jeez, these young uns!”
