Crazy Mikes Trip Report.

“Hey whats up TT'ers?Not much here the club had a very good turnout this weekend we had 8 backpackers.5 of which were new to the club.Nordhouse Dunes were fun but the flys relly sucked I mean they were BAD!!!!!!I must have tons of bites on me.I took a group on a very nice night hike that was the only time the bugs were not bitting and it was very cool the moon was almost full and there was a neat glow in the sky.

So how was everyone elses weekend?

No hiking for me this weekend, but I bought a food dehydrator, so I played with that all weekend. Made a mean batch of beef jerky today. Mmmm, mmmm, good.”

“Heya Mike. Sorry to hear about the flies. We got mosquitos down here. Have sprayed the back yard around the pool like three times so far this summer so the little varmits won't try to 'carry you' off when you are sitting outside in the evenings.”

There servers are not back up yet and I am starting to get worried.

“I came off the trail two days early in the U.P. because of the black flies. Ug. But we still got to see everything we wanted to.”

I can say I don't think I have seen them that bad in a long time!

“I went backpacking with my husband and kids, RichB and MSilver this weekend. We had a great time basecamping, dayhiking, and fishing in the stream. RichB was catching trout by the dozens (and releasing them). My kids were in the stream until they were blue. Today was VERY hot so we bailed out early. The weirdest thing was at 10 PM when I went to the creek with my water jug, wearing my headlamp, to get water to put out the small campfire, all these white flies swarmed me. They were everywhere, I couldn't even breathe. They were even in my ears. Yuck! I never had that happen before. It was a good weekend but summer heat and bugs are not my favorite.”

It's even hard for me to be motovated to think much about backpacking now.
Well, today PacRat, myself and another friend did start planning our South Dakota trip for next year. That's gonna be a blast!!!”

“Weird bug stuff for me this weekend.

I brought some of that DEET stuff and sprayed everything except my face and feet.

So, the black flies started dive bombing my nose. One got me and my nose swelled up to 1.5 times normal size. Same thing happened to my big toe. Never had that happen before. But an hour later, things were okay.

The weird thing is that I decided to be a bit more offensive with the DEET. I personally killed four or five with the spray being sure to let them wriggle painfully in their death throes. My hope was that it would set an example for the rest.

It seemed to work. No bites afterwards. And even if it didn't work, the killing was very enjoyable. :)”

“Crazy Mike- It sounds like a great trip except for the bugs. Night hikes are fun, too. We're looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks. The bugs aren't bad yet, but we'll see.”

“altogether I didn't think the flies were all that bad on the Manistee river hike and even the mosquitos were not much of a problem - altogether I think I got about 6 bites mostly on hands and lower arms - I had treated my cloths with permithrin before going and that seemed to keep the mozzies from using the drink through table cloth approach. My head area was mainly protected by putting some DEET on my hat rim - that seem to work OK mostly - at least no bites to face or head - the hat however probably will not be the same (smile) - I think the DEET affected the material of the hat and now you can see where I sprayed the DEET - oh well.”

“Hey whats going on TT'ers?Well I had gone backpacking with TT"er Evergreen and she is a very cool person!We went backpacking in Hoosier National Forest.We spent the night by patton cave and it was so nice and cool in there it was like a air cond for backpackers....Can you say 50 some deg's!!!!!Man it was very hot and it even made me think twice about backpacking but we did it and it was a kick @ss time.If I must say she is a very cool girl and I would go backpacking with her anytime.

So how was every one elses weekend?

“Sounds like a cool trip! My weekend was spent dehydrating food for my upcoming Adirondack trip. I also went to Campmor and bought a new mess kit (Bugaboo stainless stell teflon set, lighter and more practically designed then my old Coleman kit), new Thermarest Z-pad, stove fuel, waterproof matches, ect..”

“All I can say that this trip was full of surprises..Besides Mike being the coolest person ( and very informative..the man is a genius !! ) Indiana wasnt anything like I imagined it would be..
