That's the funny thing. Most of the conservative limited government states are net recipients of federal money. Most of the moderate/liberal states are net donors.

For every dollar that a resident of New Mexico spends in federal tax, his/her state recieves $2.

For every $1 that a resident of Michigan spends, Michigan recieves 82 cents.

I'd need to correlate Republican/Democrat led states with the expenditures a bit better to fully prove my point.

But states like Utah, Idaho and Montana - big "leave me alone" republican states - get much more back than they put in. They are the welfare moms of the union. Other states like Michigan and Oregon - traditional moderate to liberal states - get back less than their dollar.

Presidential Elections are strong determiners of whether a state is Republican or Democrat. So, I used the 2000 election to divide the states. There were 30 Republican states (Bush) and 20 Democratic states (Gore).

Then, I totaled the percentage of federally owned land in each of Republican states and averaged it. I did the same for the Democratic states.

Finally, I averaged the number of dollars the Republican states received for each dollar they sent to Washington in taxes. I did the same for the Democratic states.

The Results:

On average, Republican states have 21.63% of their land mass owned by the federal government. Democratic states have 13.20% of their land owned by the feds.

On average, Republican states recieved $1.58 from the federal government (fiscal year 2000) for every dollar they sent in taxes. Democratic states received 98.5 cents for every dollar sent.

It seems funny that states that would generally support less government get one third more money and have nearly double the federal land holdings of those that generally support more active government.

The "hands off" lifestyle of Republicans is supported by government largesse.”
