Bambi Stories
We were car camping a short distance from the road near the Smokies, preparing for a 3-day jaunt in the woods. It was late. Dinner was done and cleaned up. I was standing next to the campfire in the middle of my second after-dinner drink when a small herd of about five Whitetails blew through the middle of the site at a full gallop. They came so close they almost ran over me. Somehow I didn't spill a drop.

a year ago i was hiking on the OLP when a fawn came running down the trail towards me, it stopped about 5 feet from me and just looked and sniffed at me, after about 30 seconds it ran off. awesome experience, dumb fawn.

Bambi's Dad wanted the thick, lush, grass under my tent. I was awaken by his nudging of my tent as he tried to move it. (Mt. Sterling, GSMNP)

Back to the subject...
I was hiking one of the back trails in the state park here, when I heard this cha-chuk, cha-chuk sound. I stopped on the trail, and about 30 feet in front of me, a doe and her faun crossed the path, running down the hill.
It was pretty cool.

We were hiking with full packs when we came up to a stream - there was no bridge or stepping stones or anything and we really didn't want to get wet feet - so we were going to try to jump it. We walked along the bank - trying to find the narrowist spot. My friend got up a running start (as fast as you can run with a 40 pound pack) and he leaped across - just as he landed on the other bank - a deer stood up and knocked my friend backward into the stream.
We had absolutly no idea the deer was sitting there on the opposite bank - and to jump across and virtually land on top of it - we never laughed so hard in our lives.

A friend and I were day hiking near Lassen, when she noticed a bunch of "rabbits" playing leap frog...jumping over each other...after a moment we both realized that they weren’t all rabbits, it was a small group of very tiny fawns and rabbits playing together by jumping over each other, just like kids.

on a sadder note...

During a search, one of the deputies came across a fawn with only 3 legs, doing what he though was the right thing, he put the young deer down with a round to the head...just then a couple small children came running up crying "you killed Bambi, you killed Bambi"...they had adopted the injured animal as a pet....

...two weeks later everyone on SAR was sporting t shirts that had a small 3 legged deer inside a red circle with a slash line through it, below it read, Don't kill Bambi!

on my very first solo day hike i had stopped to eat lunch on the ledge of the mountain. i had a great view!! i was listening to my music (chanting) and really having a nature moment when i noticed a deer walking right behind me. she was taking her time and i was frozen because i didnt want to ruin the moment. it made the whole trip great and one that i will never be able to top.

Not a Bambi Story But....
A couple friends of mine were dayhiking west of Cody near the east entrance to Yellowstone. They were hiking down the trail when a sow and cub griz came running down the hillside, perpindicular to the trail. They crossed about 50 feet in front of them, went down the hill a little ways, then turned around and grunted and snorted at them. Then they turned and continued down the hill. The friends then cleaned their pants and got the heII out of there.

True Story.

Another time, we were in the Winds camped near Dutch Oven Lake. We had just finished dinner and were standing around sipping on some bourbon. All of a sudden a cow elk came running up to our campsite as if she was going right through thr center. She saw us, stopped dead in her tracks, looked at us for few seconds, then took off in the direction she came from.

In floated Bambi and right behind her was ol` Thumper
every time she stopped, he up and tried to stump her
they was both of `em gettin` kinda wild back there in the woods
she was havin` none of it and him tryin` to give her the goods
that wasn`t anything like the tame story I remembered as a kid
that Thumper`s a wild`n and I`m not gonna tell you what Bambi did

I have so many deer roaming around my house that I don’t even pay attention to them any more accept when they jump out in front of the car and fawn there everywhere now, I see at least 10 a day. Dozens and dozens and dozens of these defoliating machines, nothing but Agent Orange on hoofs.

I once had an experience like now slimmer, but it was moose in Maine, something woke me up in the early morning light, the side of my tent was pushed into the side of my face and I heard a very strange sound it took me a little while for my head to clear and realize that something was sniffing me. I laid their still and quite until it stopped. I poked my head out of the tent to a female moose walking away. I guess she was just curious.

In h.s. I worked at a restuarant. One night I didn't get off until late (we had mtns. of clean-up work). I was driving down our tiny town's deserted main st. (it was winter, very quite) and all the sudden I notice a herd of deer running off a side street on to main. They just pranced down the street, through the snow, right next to my car. Pretty cool.

I see deer almost every day in the fields around my house. Coming home one night I almost hit one that was standing in my driveway. See a lot while biking as well. Even though they're common, I still love to see them.

A few months ago I was climbing up Wesser Bald on the AT in North Carolina. I walked around a sharp turn in the trail and two Bambi's were standing there looking at me. I almost had a heart attack and then they took off into the woods.

I live in the mountains of North Alabama. Dear walk up to my house in the winter and graze. Sometimes we can eat breakfast and watch the dear in our yard. It's cool.

city slickers
one time I was backpacking with a friend who was from a large East coast city and had only been out west for a couple of years- when we came around a bend we saw three does browsing about 25 feet off the trail uphill - they looked up at us but did not startle and kept on eating and keeping an eye on us - well she caught up with me and said "Hey, are deer, like, vegetarians ???" before I could think to formulate a story I said yes, deer are vegetarians, why do you ask? she was worried that they might charge down and devour us
I still laugh when I think of the opportunity I missed with this....

I was hiking in the Roaring Plains area in WV 2 weekends ago...a baby deer walked right up the trail to my father and I, sniffed us on the legs, and then took off through the brush when one of us shifted. Awsome experience.

Bambi huh...
sounds like a hippie name to me...

one time i was driving down the road, and noticed a young deer running along side of me, and i stopped just in time before it jumped in front of me and crossed the road... just in time to get splattered all over the road from the car coming from the other direction, what a sound... "spluckatsplut"

do caribou count... 'cause i have a few 'bou stories... nothing really exciting about bambi, i was close enough to pet one once... on my snomobile it was running along side of me.

Can You outrun one?
Tilt

if deer ate meat there wouldn't be as many of them... there would be considerably less predators of deer, resulting in a decline of all land animals, and an end of the world as we know it

Meat eaters!!!! LOL That reminds of this taxidermied deer I saw on Ebay awhile back. The artist put these big old fangs in the mouth. Silliness I'll tell ya. Its hard to be a predator with eyes on the side of your head.

GCNP During a grill out by the gov. housing a couple of mullies came waltzing thru. They have been conditioned not to fear man. I gave them a flinch move and they just stood there.

I can't wait for fall!!

I knew a guy whose hobby was taxidermy (no, it wasn't Norman Bates). He did all kinds of great mounts... really outstanding museum-quality stuff, but he always said what really sold like crazy were the frogs playing little banjo's and fiddles.

Not deer, but....
My first experience with bighorn sheep:

Walking on the trail . . . heard rocks and looked up . . . the sheep was running downhill with its head down and horns ahead . . . I grabbed the camera and snapped a picture without looking at through the lens . . . got a nice pic of the trail. Those things are so fast and sure-footed!

I was walking the dog after work tonight and our security guard stopped as he was driving by he told me that a few streets over a black bear broke into a house. The owners left to go to the store and left the door open with only the screen door closed. When they came home the screen door had been ripped off a bowl of fruit that was sitting on a table had been eaten with only the pits left, a bag of peanuts was eaten only the empty shells left and some furniture had been pushed around. Luckily the bear was gone when they returned.
