If you can sue to be president...
Thursday, June 13, 2002

An Arizona high school student walked across the stage to
receive her diploma last month, despite the fact that she
failed her senior English class. How did this happen, you
ask? Her parents threatened to sue the school if she didn't
graduate. In the letter prepared by the parents' lawyer,
was this friendly reminder to the teacher... "Of course,
all information regarding your background, your employment
records, all of your class records, past and present,
dealings with this and other students becomes relevant,
should litigation be necessary." In response to this the
school allowed the girl in question to retake her final
five hours before graduation, even while other failing
students (whose parents probably could not afford lawyers)
were registering for Summer school.

Blame it on the lawyers.....

Of course, in any other profession, doing your job extremely well and obtaining the desired results would gain you cheers instead of jeers.

I am glad I don't have any skeletons in my closet. Too bad I am not a teacher.

Maybe it's because we've had too many bitter experiences with lawyers who have failed to perform their jobs properly and have only excelled in grasping money.

I don't see the problems with our court system being just with lawyers. Most of the problems stem from a spoiled and eager public more interested in instant gratification, shirking personal responsability and then overburdening our legal system with frivolous claims. It's the same with our healthcare too.

The lawyer is just doing what his or her client is paying them to do. The people who are really at fault here are the parents of the student who A) didn't properly motivate their child to pass English and B) have now taught their child that if life doesn't go your way, you can always sue.

As far as other professions being held in a bad light when doing their jobs, I've written code that is used to monitor nuclear power plants. No doubt there's someone, somewhere, who would say I've done a bad thing even though the code works well and provides the customer with the desired results.

Funny how everyone seems to assume that (a) the threatening letter to the teacher is what did the trick and (b) the student deserved to fail and the lawsuit was frivolous.

Did I miss something in the article or do you all have information I haven’t seen?

gear slut is right. our litigious society is the primary problem. that lawyer wouldn't have written a demand letter if he was never approached by those parents. a demand letter isn't really litigation, could've been an empty threat considering the language used.

Perhaps the teacher should have sued for harassment, mental anguish, lost work time due to depression and defamation of character.

And the cycle continues.

Shallow people criticize lawyers until they need one. Then we are the best friends they've ever had.

most lawyers are professional and decent. of the many i deal with on a daily basis, i would question the professionalism of maybe one or two.

good lawyer joke
Two alligators are sitting on the edge of a swamp. The small one turns to the big one and says; "I don't understand how you can be so much bigger than me. We're the same age, we were the same size as kids... I just don't get
it."

"Well," says the big alligator, "what have you been eating?"

"Lawyers, same as you," replies the small alligator.

"Hmmm. Well, where do you catch 'em?"

"Down at that law firm on the edge of the swamp."

"Same here. Hmmm. How do you catch 'em?"

"Well, I crawl under a BMW and wait for someone to unlock the door. Then I jump out, bite 'em, shake the #&%!$ out of 'em, and eat 'em!"

"Ah!" says the big alligator, "I think I see your problem. See, by the time you get done shakin' the #&%!$ out of a lawyer, there's nothin'left but lips and a briefcase..."

Lawyers are good for the country. It's criminals like that teacher who need to be rounded up.

Even before the revolution this was a litigious country.

Major Robert Rogers(of Roger's Rangers) had to borrow money to raise and supply his company to fight the French and Indians.
He was successful at the fighting but unable to get money from "The Crown" to pay creditors.
He was sued and dogged by creditors.

Back in the 1760's the Colonies were lawsuit-happy.

As a Dr nicely said. Attorneys are just doing what they are paid to do. Its the system. Its all about money and personal power.

And the AMA is doing such a wonderful job keeping incompetent doctors from practicing.

They certainly keep the political wheels greased with cash.
