I don't really care too much whether it's in there or not, but I've always wondered how they got away with adding the "under God" part - including the capital 'G' - back in 1954. Seems like pretty obvious joining of church and state. I always assumed it was something in the pledge from a long time before then.

I can see how those that believe in no divine authority would be offended. However saying there is no God is also stating a religions believe. Some times silence is a statement in it its own way.

Actually I don’t like that pledge anyway. My allegiance is to a country not some piece of cloth. I do not like pledging “to the flag and to the country for which it stands.” How about pledging “to the country this flag represents” or something that puts the country first.”

I always thought “God” was a name or term that meant different thinks to different people. I use the same term (“God”) as many other faiths but my believe about God’s nature, attributes and form are way different than most of those other faiths. Please tell me which “God” the pledge is referring to. Is it the same on referred to on our money. I guess some atheists will stop taking cash.”

When you have the state defering to a religious institution, you loose the accountability that we have with elected individuals. It sets up a class system. This is why we fought the War of Independence. It's about equal and answerable representation and not having ourselves being dictated to by any unelected institution whether it is religious or not.

There's nothing wrong with an elected official having good values or morals influenced by religion, I prefer it, however they darned well better be anwerable to me as a citizen and not just to their hierarchy or higher powers.”
