AT Shelter demolition

“The old shelter on the AT at Gooch Gap is scheduled to be demolished in early August. This was planned as part of the building of the new shelter on Gooch Mountain, but they waited until after thru-hiker season was over.

One of the main reasons that the new shelter was built and the old shelter is being removed is because the old shelter was too close to FS42, and the locals would use it as a party hut. The new shelter is about a mile and a half from the road, at milepoint 14.3 on the AT.

“I visited the new shelter last December and it's gorgeous! Nice job on the construction and great location ... about 100 yards off the AT down a slight incline.

The old shelter was UP on a windy hill and cold at night!”

“I think there is a picture of the new shelter on the GATC page. It does look nice, and you gotta love the Nantahala-style construction. It has a loft too, right MDS?”

“Yes it has a loft and a bench/table to cook on. The AT was rerouted to reach the shelter and the new trail was great to hike on. Nice and smooth don't ya know. Wish it was all like that. Wonder what kind of shape it's in now?”

“I dunno, but I should re-hike that portion now. I hiked the old portion last September when I was on it.”

“Yep that's the new one. I've seen pics of the old one with 12 people in it. It would comfortable fit 6.”
