I will be bringing nylon cord as well and should be able to accommodate a couple of bags as well. If it becomes necessary, people can carry their food out to whatever vehicles are parked on Route 191 and stash it there.

My daughter-in-law will be coming along with my son. All of her experience has been with car-camping, so this will all be new to her. See, I'm even providing a newgie for our entertainment!

Good call on the guitar Zay. Yeah, moisture would not be good and at the very least it will be humid.

Geobeet and other PennPeople
I've read there is a small population of elk in Pennsylvania. Would they happen to be in the area we are hiking by any chance?

Nope, unless they belong to the Elks organization. The real elk hang out in north central Pa. near the Quehanna Trail, which jmitch informed me is a loop trail that cuts through an elk preserve. Gotta go do it one day.

Cool, thanks Geo. I'll have to check out that area sometime, I'd love to hear their bugle call! Wildlife is a big reason why I love backpacking.

MSilver has a great picture of a whole pile of tangled rattlesnakes that were right next to the trail on a recent hike.

Cool! Timberland rattlers are neat snakes. I've seen them before up in Harriman State Park (Rockland Co., NY).

Are you really from da Big Apple???
WF, the only animals you have to worry about walk on two legs and live in Brooklyn! Compared to them the ones you meet on the trail will be just fine.

Peopleage,

My friend Frank and I will be joining you all for the overnighter. If all goes well, we'll meet most of you Saturday morning at the start of the trip (I can't guarantee that we'll be able to keep up with the rest of you - especially on the climb up Minsi with full packs - but will catch up later).

On Sunday morning, instead of backtracking to the Water Gap, we're planning to continue on to Fox Gap, drop off the backpacks at a vehicle spotted there on Route 191, then switch to daypacks and hike a little farther west along the AT to Wolf Rocks (maybe even a little beyond there), have lunch, enjoy the view, then head back to Fox Gap to end our version of the trip. Hope the weather holds up.

Wildflower: With all these posts (330! ...and counting!) I think there's something in here about your brother's illness. I hope and pray he'll be okay. God bless.

M Silver,

Everybody can hike at their own pace. We'll all get there eventually, and I can pretty much guarantee that I'll be lurking near the rear of the bunch so you may have company.

As an old man named Eric once told me in the Adirondacks when I was a lot younger, "We all get to the top eventually. It's just that I get there when they're all coming down and I have the place to myself!"

I need a BIG favor...
OK....I'm in for the trailhead, and both days.

BUT CAN I GET A BIG FAVOR FROM SOMEONE? I would like to leave my car in Wind Gap. My son will not be able to come at all, so that leaves me without a shuttle. If anyone is driving up Saturday morning, from the south or west, you may be driving right past Wind Gap on Rte. 33.

Anyone???

Fritz, I don't know the area and will be heading in from the east (near NYC). But if you give me directions I don't mind leaving a bit earlier to pick you up. Lemme know!

Fritz - I'll be able to pick you up. This is my first time on-line since coming home from Acadia NP so I am way behind on everything.
Just let me know what time you'll be there. I assume you mean the small parking area where the AT crosses 115 in Wind Gap, right?

Sounds like some of you know the area much better than me.. so perhaps it's better if one of you help Fritz out (I'd hate to leave him stranded because I got lost!). I can be used as a backup though.

Pennsy, Acadia is beautiful, I've been there a couple of times. Hope you had fun.
