Try Big South Fork In December...”

“The Smokies are fantastic. For easier grades and better trail conditions, I recommend:

Little River Trail from Elkmont to Campsite 24

Kephart Prong Trail (this one is really neat...you pass through an old CCC camp grown over by forest)

Deep Creek Trail (follows creek...great waterfalls and fishing)

Fourney Ridge Trail from Clingman's Dome to Andrews Bald (Andrews Bald was the prettiest view I saw in the park)

Lakeshore Trail along Fontana Lake

Or, if you're in for a real adventure: hike the Lakeview Drive at night. This trail was intended to give the outside world access to a cemetary within the park, but it was never completed. The idea of hiking towards a cemetary at night is a little creepy, but it's a neat hike.

There are many other great trails there, but these are some that I've seen.

Just remember to stay away from the Goshen Prong Trail....it kicked my flatlander $ss. ;)”

“The Smoky's are only good in the winter though.

“Dittos on the Smokies. Love em but only in cold weather, less idiots. I don't pack in summer. The TN govt shutdown is mostly a political ploy to make us suffer because the people don't want an unconstitutional income tax. It'll be resolved soon and everything running again. Give it a week or so.”

“All of the State Parks will be open through the July 4th weekend and then shut down on Sunday/Monday.

Also heard that all of the visitor centers are closed already.”

“I thought the temp was just right in the Smokies during early June...surely it can't be all that hot now. We're sitting in the mid to upper 90s right now down here...can't be that hot there. Idiots...yes, but all you have to do is take the lesser used trails and stay away from all of them. Just be sure to arrive at the park before 8am and leave somewhere between 10pm and 8am, or the traffic will be murder...sheesh.”

“Tennessee has got to have the stupidest government. I don't know who's makeing the desisions but they need to be buried in a shallow unmarked grave. The State Park situation is just a drop in the hat in showing how screwed up things are.
Me personally, I'm not hiking anymore in Tennessee until they get their sh1t together. When BPing season starts back up I'll be going only to other states.

I do plan to make it to Cumberland Gap this comming Season to do the Ridge trail again. Of cource that ain't in Tennessee.”
