Forrest, you're obviously biased against the Mac. My wife could debate you all day long about the power of the MAC vs. the power of the PC. I suppose the crux of the issue is what you're doing with your 'puter, and who writes the best software to take advantage of it. My wife does professional commercial video editing on an AVID digital editing suite that is centered around a dual G4 Mac. All totalled her system is valued at around $150,000, computer included. Avid just BARELY started to put together a system that's PC based, but it can't come close to the performance that her system is capable of. Mainly because of hardware limitations. Personally, I love both my 'puters, and don't intend to get rid of either of them. Happy computing and thanks for the entertaining comments.

Hobbit... you sure it's hardware limitations or is the software limited to that of a MAC?

Used them both, crashed them both, used them both for graphics and publishing.

The only reason macs have an advantage in the graphics world is because they have the market share. Go PC in that market and you will have a disadvantage because most everyone else is on a mac.

I can do everything on a PC that I can do on a mac, only it costs me less with a PC and I have more options.

Others will disagree but that is my experience.

I strongly dislike macs and I do mean STRONGLY. All through high school I had to use em and believe me, they crash like none other. We would actually hold contests to see who could crash theirs the fastest. We had some lock ups that made the blue screen of death seem enjoyable. The problem with macs is people love them because they try to be loved. They're like a big soft pillow. They're friendly and easy to use, until you need to actually USE it. I PC is the opposite. It's like hugging a cinder block, but it's designed to serve it's purpose. How many networks run on Mac's? Have you ever heard of a Sun Mac-rostation? As for graphics, yea the mac can process the stuff faster, but the industry still preferrs the PC hardwear layout. I've got a buddy majoring in Computer graphic design and all the systems they use are Linix or Windows based PCs. They say that a mac just can't handle the uptime required to render huge projects.

Use & fix both...
I'm a teacher...school is PC, I'm ambidextrous. But I buy Macs for my home.

I can open 7 bands of satellite data on a 5 year old consumer Mac with 128mb of RAM and my 1 year old PC locks up on it. Oh yeah...did I mention that 7 bands of satellite data is 300 mb? Same software also.

But let's keep promoting PC's...it keeps us employed fixing them all the time.

As for operating systems, I can literally run Mac OSX, Unix, Windows and Mac OS 9.2 operating systems all simultaneously on the same machine.

But the main reason I buy Macs is...
I plug it in...
I turn it on...
And the damn thing works.

My PC does also...as long as I don't let anyone load anything extra on it or mess with it.

PC's are cheap...but you're chained to Microsnot. Read some of their latest licensing escapades in the Register. Linux is looking better all the time for PC's.

But I'll keep doing my work on my Mac.

PC - dual boot W2K & XP Pro
-P4 2.0Ghz
-512 MB RAM
-100 MB HD 7200 rpm
-CD RW (32x12x40)& DVD (16x)drives
-nVidia GeForce2 GTS-V (64 MB) graphics
-Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
-3.5" floppy drive
-6 USB ports
-3 IEEE 1394 ports
-3 avaiable PCI expansion slots
-10/100 NIC
-56 kbps modem

..and all for $800.

I also added a 17" flat panel monitor, surround sound speakers and a wireless mouse.

I'm running a cable connection with a 4 port Linksys Router and frequently get download speeds of 3 Mbps+.

It's a screamer...until next week when it becomes obsolete.

Macs suck.

I've been having this debate professionally for years and years. I'm in medical software industry, and keep running into doc's who were early adopters of Mac's. They LOVED to tell me how much better MAC's were compared to Wintel.

I used to debate with them. Not anymore.

I simply ask: Who won the marketing war - Wintel or MAC?

Who has the best OS is IRRELLEVENT! Whoever has the most software wins! I have a zillion options if I use Wintel... I have 2 or 3 if I run MAC.

Options. Freedom to choose. Future upgrade opportunity. Decreased risk associated with purchasing an "off brand" product.

Bottom Line: In MOST industries, MAC is an "off-brand" product.

So was the 'marketing war' won fairly or did the Gates/IBM clone industry dump tons of substandard 'Great Software' and motherboards of questionable worth into a system that values nothing but short-term gain?

The redneck says "THAT was for the Titanic!"

"WHAT?!?!?"

Why you should take a Mac user to lunch

Adam Smith would not believe PC & Macintosh prices
Jul 24, 2002

Summary
Apple's new rackmount server is just another Unix box -- with big implications for the Linux community. Four million new Unix users a year, that's the MacOS X promise and it's a market full of friends with whom we should be working. (2,200 words)

i-macs are far better than PCs. There are less pieces to worry about, so when you throw them out your window, you can do it in just one trip. Plus, they're more aerodynamic- I heaved mine a good thirty feet just for looking so stupid.
