“Anybody else miss food - I mean real food - when you go backpacking?” 4:13:24 PM 7/03/02 “Is beer real food?” 4:34:27 PM 7/03/02 “My upcoming trip is an attempt to avoid exactly what biz mentioned. I dehydrated some meals I commonly make at home to bring with me this time around.” 5:10:43 PM 7/03/02 “lucky duck I just made some DELICIOUS cocktail meatballs. I mean they are DELICIOUS. I wish I had a dehydrator :(” 6:08:32 PM 7/03/02 “I've been learning the beauty of dehydrating. My last two trips I took meals made at home. Yum” 6:19:43 PM 7/03/02 “Found a new zip-pak food in Wally World's camping section. Jack Link's Extra Tender Beef Steak Nugget's Original. 3.5 oz net wt., 4.0 oz on my scale. Package claims good for up to 3 days after opening. Looked like a real find. Dried Beef. Not jerky. Yum. Opened up the package and an unpleasant smell hit my nose. Not rotten, but not good either. Like less than top grade beef was used. Bit into a nugget and quickly spit it out. Pretty nasty stuff. Your tastes may vary....” 6:22:55 PM 7/03/02 “Biz, I HIGHLY recommend getting one. Don't know if you found a job yet, but mine has already paid for itself after just two weeks of use, so it'll definitely save you money depending on how and what you use it for. Beef jerky's expensive, I make my own now, and it's mmmm, mmm good.” 6:28:01 PM 7/03/02 “how OFTEN and what you use it for... I've been skipping words a lot lately. Very weird strange.” 6:29:14 PM 7/03/02 “Double word score Points off? no weird wednesday” 6:37:32 PM 7/03/02 “No, I enjoy "quick eats." I guess it was Nigal (or his alter-ego Darrel) who coined it "dirt-bagging." The Heck with the nutrition, taste, etc, just give me quick eats which are easy.” 7:03:31 PM 7/03/02 “I prefer to dehydrate my own food, but have yet to figure a way to dry/ rehydrate ham and chicken in such a way that it doesn't become a bunch of little strings that stick in betweem your teeth. I guess use ground meats only.” 7:34:15 PM 7/03/02 REAL FOOD! “Most of us are only out for a couple of days, so why skimp on eating good tasting food. You should never experiment with a new meal out in the woods because if it does not agree with you it's the hersey squirts for sure. Also if its only two or three days try taking some real food! So what if your pack weight is 2 lbs more at first, your are going to eat it anyway! Try canned meats pack in aluminum cans. The extra weight is very little, remember it takes 22 soda cans to equal a lb. So stop whinning about the once! I have made Shrimp Scampi at 10,000 ft and that is a long way from the ocean. It was a surprise for all my compations that night, and they wish they had carried more! (yes I secretly placed cans of shrimp and fresh garlic in their backpacks just before we left!) So bottom line is- quit starving yourself with the lightest, bland tasting, most retched food ever devised by man and enjoy a good meal, one of life's true great pleasures!” 8:49:07 PM 7/03/02 Treebait “I've not tried ham, too salty for me. But have used chicken/turkey as long as it was in a sauce before hitting the dehydrator. It takes a bit longer to rehydrate. If you're impatient it will be a bit chewy, but still works.” 8:54:57 PM 7/03/02 “Okay stumprider. By the way I usually soak the ham to get most of the salt out, then dry it. I made the mistake of not rinsing only once.” 9:21:46 PM 7/03/02 Do i miss food... OHhhh yes! “Long trips, ya can't carry real food, and boy by 10 or 15 days i really start to miss real food, i imagine eating a tub of frosting or a whole pizza, or cheeseburgers at bk, and doughnuts, and bars, and candy... on a weekend trip i could care less, i know it'll be there soon enough. and after the trip i never binge like i imagined... it doesnt' seem the same. But on trail, the only down i ever feel, enough to remember anyway, is food... but it's all well, well worth it, hmm, backpacking vs. real food... easy one :)” 9:29:17 PM 7/03/02 Hey Biz.... “I dropped a thread a few days ago trying to get in touch with you. Had a hard drive crash not long ago, lost all my e-addys so was trying to contact you via TT, Drop an e-mail tonite or early tomorrow if you're interested.... strider” 10:01:12 PM 7/03/02 Hey Biz... “Hey Biz, Why don't you learn to cook? What good is a woman who can't cook and clean?” 7:02:07 AM 7/04/02
