Backpacking AND Canoeing... Where?
Backpacking is fun. So is canoeing. And canoes seem to be large enough to toss in a couple backpacks and head out. Where to? Good question. That's what I need help with. I live in Ohio, am willing to travel to Canada or anywhere that I could drive to in 1-2 days. I am looking to do a week long outing. Only requirements are good views (either from the canoe or from a trail). Any suggestions?

Buffalo Needs Rain!
I agree with stratdewd that the Buffalo River is a great place, but it's gettin' kind of low right now.

Recommended floating levels and current levels can be found at:

good point owldood, that's why i'd go on the lower buffalo this time o year. 27 miles, no roads, and a river runs through it. there's a large creek , i ferget the name, about half way down that run, it's would be cool to hike up in there. also a couple ghost towns that the wilderness has reclaimed. i checked one out, it was cool(buffalo city i think it was). rush has some awesome dayhiking, up to the old zink mines. we found an old studibaker about a half mile back in a mine. AWESOME!

The Wisconsin River is great! Sandbars for camping, plenty of towns along the way for supplies. Some of the outfitters can be found at www.iit.edu/~travel/wiscanr.html and check out www.muscodayachtclub.org these boys party!!

Suwannee River. Canoe it and hike the Florida trail along its banks.

Keep it as a cold weather option.

i'm with josh on this one, come on up to the bwcaw, or go on into canada to the quetico, but the boundary waters is just as nice, and ya don't have to worry 'bout all the canadian paper crap, one permit is all ya need. i think ya can easily find 7 days worth in the bw, i've done quite a few trips up there, and i only see the same areas again 'cause they're so beautiful.

Algonquin is another Ontario park that is famous for canoeing. Are you looking for lakes or rivers? If you are going to go to Ontario gor to wabakimi. If you include all the surrounding provincial wilderness parks it is almost 7 million acres of lakes and rivers. That is to far for what you are looking for just thought i would metion it though

Sylvania Recreation Area, Watersmeet, MI in the UP, lots of portage lakes with no motors allowed.

I second mtnman's suggestion. Canoe in to remote campsites (or car camp) with trails. Canoe rental a couple of miles outside the park.

I prefer Quetico over BWCA. Fewer people and you don't have to paddle Moose Lake. Have used Canoe Canada outfitters in Atakokin (sp?) for partial outfitting, rent canoes (comes with paddles, yokes & pfd's) they handle the permits and will take you to put-in and take-out points. They will also help plan your route to meet your needs, ability and interest. I take all my own gear and food.

Many other places in Northern Wisconsin and UP for hiking & canoeing.

I agree, Boundry Waters are great, However, I would also highly recommend Yellowstone NP. Put in on Lewis lake, paddle around the edge of the lake (ask the ranger why you shouldn't paddle stright across the lake) to Lewis Channel, Paddle up the channel as far as you can then portage by towing the canoe a mile upstream to Shoshone Lake. Lots of great hiking trails around Shoshone. Spend several days exploring the lake, lots of big game animal to be found there. (you are not at the top of the food chain there). After leaving Shoshone lake via Lewis channel, an exciting ride to say the least Take a float trip down the Snake River, Class 1, 2 and 3. Then there is Jackson Lake, Jenny Lake, and others that I forget the name of in Grand Tetons, endless packing areas there that you can canoe to. The Buffalo is a good River, but low water is a problem this time of the year. Its very boney.
