Britain downgrades possessionView Messages“I guess my point was skully is that other than your statement, I have seen no correlation between production and consumption in a state. The only things I have seen [albeit without complete statistical analysis] would lead me to believe that no correlation exists.” 8:36:19 AM 7/18/02 “I really do wish I had more time to delve into this right now. By the time I do, it will no longer be 'topic' on TT. Speaking of which, I'm outta here again. Hope to see y'all tomorrow!” 8:39:59 AM 7/18/02 “Looks like I got a reprieve. I'm going to try to dig up some stuff on this today and report back what I find chili. One thing I would like to add. It is likely and even probable that the newspaper article with that info in it presented it in such a way as to make it look like those tobacco and/or alcohol producing states were unique because there was a movement at the time in Kentucky to replace tobacco as a cash crop and that was the focus of that article. Like I said, I'll check back when I have more.” 9:43:09 AM 7/18/02 “Wonder what happened to Prowler's "driveway plant"?” 9:51:44 AM 7/18/02 “Do you suppose that had anything to do with his family's rapid exit from Ohio and their lengthy 'vacation' out west?” 9:54:24 AM 7/18/02 “Hell with some miracle grow and plenty water, it should be causing the neighbors to gawk. Let's see, he has been gone a couple of weeks.......hmmm,,,,,should we start the "Prowler Defense Fund"?” 9:55:22 AM 7/18/02 “I think you are on to something, Skull!” 9:56:15 AM 7/18/02 FREE PROWLER! “Man, I can just see it now......” 9:57:35 AM 7/18/02 For chile36 and skullcap “Here are tables from a 1999 survey conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services regarding substance use by state. Tables 6B and 8B would seem to be most relevant.” 10:01:10 AM 7/18/02 “What sucks is that the years don't match up between yours Violin and chili's. What I will need to find is a valid epidemiologic study. Off to the NIH database for me!” 10:06:04 AM 7/18/02 “What would we do without The Fiddle? Do you wrestle under that name, also?” 10:07:01 AM 7/18/02 “Just glancing over the tables seems to refute the notion that alcohol and tobacco producing states lead the field in use. The numbers are all over the place. Sure looks like they like to party in Colorado though.” 10:11:13 AM 7/18/02 “Brings to ming a certain John Denver song.......” 10:14:39 AM 7/18/02 “Who is ming?” 10:28:05 AM 7/18/02 Chinese for MIND! “You dummy!” 10:31:15 AM 7/18/02 “Someone a while ago said that lots of marijuana is produced in kentucky but those figures for states are based off how much they sized. So really it just depends on law enforcement.” 2:21:14 PM 7/18/02 “Emperor Ming, from Flash Gordon. You know, the guy with the vicious goatee.” 2:27:30 PM 7/20/02 “Ming the Merciless! Great bit of casting with Max von Sydow, eh wot? (yet another film that is more enjoyable if the viewer is morphed in some fashion)” 3:26:36 PM 7/20/02 OK Chili “I can't believe you let me slide on this one this long. Here's what I've got. The comparison I did was for 1996/97and included only smoking and tobacco production. The reason for this is that all of the statistics necessary for a comprehensive comparison were only available for 1996/97 and no other corresponding years. Also, I couldn't find comparative numbers in the same year for both alcohol use and consumption so it was left out entirely. The top ten tobacco producing states in descending order are North Carolina, Kentucky, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. USDA tobacco production table. The top 10 states for adult smokeless tobacco usage in descending order are West Virginia, Wyoming, Kentucky, Alaska, Alabama, Montana, Kansas, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. Centers for Disease Control tobacco usage tables 1997. The top 10 states for adult cigarette smoking in descending order are Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Nevada, Tennessee, Missouri, Alaska, West Virginia, Louisiana, and North Carolina. Centers for Disease Control tobacco usage tables 1996. As you can see, 8 of the top 10 tobacco producing states made it into the tobacco usage top 10 lists. Kentucky appears on all three lists. Even if the smokeless tobacco data are ignored because they are from 1997 half of the top 10 tobacco producing states are in the top 10 for adult cigarette usage. In a nation with 50 states in it these are pretty impressive feats. Of course there are other factors that influence those numbers but this one cannot be ignored or dismissed. The correlation is too strong. I invite you to peruse other sources for more information. And some research journal abstracts with pertanant information. You will have to go to a college library or research college library to read the full text, they aren't available online. < a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=9834581&dopt=Abstract" target ="_blank">Cigarette smoking in Kentucky: smoking-attributable mortality and years of potential life lost. Cigarette smoking among U.S. adults by state and region: estimates from the current population survey. Relationship of personal tobacco-raising, parental smoking, and other factors to tobacco use among adolescents living in a tobacco-producing region. Geographic and gender variations in total tobacco use. Use of smokeless tobacco in the United States: recent estimates from the current population survey.” 11:05:50 AM 7/24/02 “Skully: You might be able to send that in for a mail-order PhD :) Interesting!” 11:08:24 AM 7/24/02 “Hmmm...for some reason two of those links melded in the copy/paste process. Here they are again. < a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=9834581&dopt=Abstract" target ="_blank">Cigarette smoking in Kentucky: smoking-attributable mortality and years of potential life lost.” 11:09:52 AM 7/24/02 But not a PhD in html! “Let me try these seperately. ” 11:12:38 AM 7/24/02 And this is the missing one! “Cigarette smoking in Kentucky: smoking-attributable mortality and years of potential life lost. I see the problem was in that first one. Well it works even if it's not pretty.” 11:14:27 AM 7/24/02 “Impressive! I will sort through the data, perform some statistical analysis and draw some conclusions this evening. Or then again, I could go to Beale Street and listen to Ruby Wilson belt out the blues at the weekly "Mid Week Blues" party. Mmmm, you better give me a couple of days to get back with you.” 11:20:05 AM 7/24/02 “chili36 - Just pull an O'Reilly Factor and dismiss it out of hand. Her numbers obviously reflect a liberal bias.” 11:24:47 AM 7/24/02 “Chili, I know which option I'd choose! There's a reason why it didn't get posted until after the weekend. LOL!” 11:49:55 AM 7/24/02
