I've been doing some chatting with Walkindude about coming to play in Michigan for a weekend. He's ready and willing. Now, it's up to us, the Michigan Mountaineers, to show him a good time.

Here are the weekends that will work:

Oct 4/5/6
Oct 11/12/13
Nov 8/9/10

He said he's willing to come early enough to hike on Friday afternoon/evening, so let's make this a three day hike.

Who wants in? Any preferences on the weekend? Where would you like to go to show him the best the lower penninsula has to offer in three days?

Personally, I like Oct - fall colors. But, I am flexible. Jordan River and the Manistee River Trail would be great, but both are two day hikes... Unless we add a stretch of the NCT to the MRT

le subtil - you had mentioned the High Country Pathway in an earlier thread. Do you have good maps? Maybe we can shuttle that into a three day trip?

I still havn't done Jordan River. That gets my vote for fall colors.

I'm guessing Jordan River would be gorgeous in fall. But, it couldn't be made into a three day trip due to camping regs.

OK, well then, I think you guys should take me to Jordan River some other time. :)

Tara, I'm so nervous about having a life this fall with school going on. I have to take a math class and an astronomy class. Math shouldn't be too tough, and hopefully the astronomy class will be cool. But I'll be in school three days a week! Possibly 4 the term after that! I'm amazed that you seem to have time for everything!

One cannot live on Math and Astronomy alone. Even Plato went backpacking... Make time for philosophy in your life and you will not need to know what happens next

Whatever weekend...we'll be there.

I vote for High Country pathway. I'm tired of Manistee Rv Trail. Or we could do a bunch of NCT segments and include the Jordan River valley segment.

SG - You have to make time. I do homework at work and skip class all the time. That's how I get by.

kidding...

Really - I try to select classes that are on the same day. So, I can leave work and go to two classes. Makes for a long day, but prevents me from being in school every night.

Just be sure to get your homework done as soon as it's assigned. If you have two classes with some time inbetween - get into the library and do homework. And try not to take classes on Fridays. Then, you're all set. You'll be amazed at how easy it can be once you get into the swing of things.

welcome walkindude!
Hmmm, the HCP might even slow Walkindude down a bit. Not cuz of the hills, just due to little use and even less maintenance. It's all good & just adds to the wilderness feeling....like being lost in a cedar swamp, LOL! I've hiked about 70% of it.

Here's a vote for Oct. 4,5,6 to maybe avoid the fall monsoon season and likely spot some elk/hear some bull elk in rut.

I'll be ready to head up to Yankee Country this Fall. Look foward to meeting several of yall. BTW, What's the Yankee word for Yall?

As far as the name, It shall remain Walkindude. I do answer to Dude though. No real names please.
I can drop the walking pace down when I cruise with other people. I prefer fast & long when solo though.

Chili
Gotta admit, Tango is a Hottie but I'm taken so no chance of any of your wild fanticies happening.

Yeah man, I got a 4 track recorder and I've been recording some origional tunes. Maybe I'll have some music to share in a couple of months. I've also been composing songs with a former band member.

Where ever we wind up going I know It'll be fun.

Hey walkindude I thought I might need to warn ya. You talk with pretty much with the same accent I do. Be carefull, very, very careful. The word for Ya'll up there is "Youse guys" They don't tote nothing, they carry it. They ain't fixin to do nothing. They will be doing something... I once ordered a hamburger no onions on it. The girl replied 1 hamburger and 1 onion omelet coming up. I love it up thar. "There" for Youse guys. The people are friendly, much like they are here, but they will have a hard time with your accent at times. Good luck and hope Ya'll enjoy yenselves.

Tarabull - that worked in undergrad, not sure it will work with my real job. :)

Walkindude - have you traveled this far north before? BAMA's got it right - we can be addressed as "youse guys".

As for the location, the Mountaineers have never taken me to a bad place!

"youse guys"? Isn't that the way it's said in New York? I prefer "you all" or just "guys". We'll manage to understand ya Dude. Some of us have kin, spent months living, or were born in the south

yeah the pop thing threw me slightly when I was up there earlier this year - the Michigan Mountaineers are good people - they didn't even chuckle when the occasional "y'all" popped out - of course being a hotline phone lackey for a number of years I can understand a large range of regional accents and I had no problem understanding the folks up there.

Ain't it amazing how many different sub languages the English language has?!?!
LOL!!!

Bubbler- The first timae I EVER heard that was in New Hampshire last year. This Kat told me the phone was by the bubbler. I thought, "What da fuks a bubbler?". I found the phone next to the water fountain.

Coke- Down here a Coke is used to cover a wide range of carbonated drinks. For example my favorite kinda Coke is Mountain Dew & Mellow Yellow. I seldom drink actual Coke.
I mostly drink Ice water. What do yall (youse guys) call that?

If October 4,5,&6 is good with everybody then I'll go on and mark it on the calendar at work.

"I mostly drink Ice water. What do yall (youse guys) call that?"

I call it ice water.... w/ a lower case 'i'. :)

P.S. I have to second Sass on the "youse guys" thing. I've never heard that in Michigan. Upper or Lower penninsula. I think that's a NY thing.

I've marked Oct 4/5/6 in my calendar, too. So, unless someone chimes in soon, it's all set.

I have been to Watertown Wi. and Ann Arbor, Vicksburg, and Detroit Mi. I heard the term Youse guys in Vicksburg. My wife ordered an Ice tea and she got Rasberry tea. It wasn't half bad. Although the other half was. I enjoy mingling with the locals. I was amazed at the mating crys of some of the loons there. Weird!! But I was also amazed the first time I heard an elk bugle. I guess it ain't hard to amaze a country boy from the south. My kids went with me once and it was funny to just sit and listen to the local kids tring to mock mine. I have never been to the u.p. I wish i had enough time to head up there with Ya'll. It sounds like Ya'll gonna have a blast.

I have no idea what my schedule will be like until school starts for the kids. I'll do my best to make it whatever weekend you choose. November isn't good for me because two of my children have birthdays and then there's Thanksgiving... busy, busy, busy! I vote for October.

At this point, a specific trail hasn't been picked. Sounds possible we'll do a section of the High Country Pathway or North Country Trail (I like your idea, Sass, about the NCT w/ Jordan River).

We haven't heard any objections to Oct 4/5/6, so those will be the days.

Distance, in miles, is also not yet decided. Although, I'd guess 8-10 miles... give or take.

Closest airport will depend on where we go. Most likely you'll end up in Detroit Metro or Flint Bishop and once of us would pick you up.
