Yeah, we ate a lot of crabs and fish. My "old" town near Baltimore wasn't rich, just a collection of small and medium-sized brick houses. But it was in a terrific location. I still love to visit the Chesapeake. There is a great town on the eastern shore, in Virginia I think, named Onancock. Totally picturesque with a nice boat dock and a homey little restaurant overlooking the inlet. And Chincoteague is a wonderful beach with a dangerous riptide and the local wild ponies.

Ahhhhhhhh! There are too many choices for snowshoes! Aluminum decks, plastic decks, cheap ones for groomed trails and expensive ones for backcountry. Yikes! Something tells me that I'm going to need ones for "ungroomed" trails, since snowshoeing isn't something many people do locally. I could, given enough snow, but most people here go skiing when it snows, not snowshoeing.

Lyndy,

I like my Tubbs Altitude 30". But if I could do it over again, I think I'd get the MSR Denali Ascent. Except for some folks not liking the fact that they're a bit noisier than aluminum frames, I hear good things about them. The modular design lets you attach 4 or 8 inch tails for more - or less -flotation, depending on snow depth and snow conditions. Their bindings are supposed to be mitten-friendly, and they have heel lifters for steep uphills.

Thanks MSilver for the info. Have fun on your trip. I'll check out the MSR Denali Assents vs the Atlas when I get a chance to go to Campmor and REI.

Buddur, I didn't get up early enough to see the star over the moon. My husband decided to stay home from work, so we all slept in. Usually looking for the moon is the first thing I do. Maybe we'll see it tomorrow. I had a cold, so finally I could breathe better and could sleep last night.

Cloudy and rainy here. Again. SE MI gets more sun in the winter than in the summer, but I'm not sure where its been....

I think the star was Jupiter. It's been in that same general area for weeks, now. A wwk or so ago it was at its closest point to earth, but it sure looked bigger today than it has all along.

Back to cold temps this morning. It's 10 out now and there's an advisory for sleet and freezing rain through the night. Yuck!

Sleet is supposed to come at some point tonight around here. When I was buying my snowshoes in the early 1980's there really wasn't that much to choose from like there is today. There's a lot of nice snowshoes out there now and some really good bargains too.

Looks like Venus. Here is the chart for my time and place this morning. It was nearly directly east, over the Sandia Mountains.

Lyndy, I haven't really researched the snowshoe market at all since I bought mine many years ago. I read whatever reviews Backpacker magazine had over the years since I get the magazine. Mine are 1983 Sherpa Snowclaws 9"X36" which are longer than most people use, but they work well for me since I've usually snowshoed alone and rarely if ever on packed trails. These don't sink in as much as a small shoe, but the downside is they weigh more too. The extra weight doesn't bother me because I figure I don't have to lift the shoe as high as I would with a smaller pair. I once snowshoed a few years ago with a guy that was wearing the small models for packed trails. We were in fresh snowfall about 18" deep and he was sinking in so far it looked like he had no snowshoes on at all. So I would assume the small shoes are for packed trails only or for running. He then told me that he was buying a larger pair for fresh snow and was disappointed with their performance in those conditions. So maybe the adjustable models from MSR kill two birds with one stone. I guess you have to consider if you will be using them with an overnight backpack too.

Well, Heck. It looks like that was a nice conjunction I missed, <grrrr>. According to the Moonrise program, the Moon (and its cohorts) rose just after 4 AM and was a crescent 15% full. (Hmmm... wouldn't ya know.... it was written by some wacko in Grand Rapids, LOL)

Also, according to the Interactive Star Chart at S&T, Venus was right there with it as well as Mars (tho' Mars isn't too bright right now). It's a little hard to tell; they're so close together and there isn't a 'zoom' feature.

It sounds like the leaves in are changing down in the tropics, <G>

All four of us stayed up and watched the New Years ball drop in Times Square on TV. I spent most of the evening reading "Cold Mountain". It really is a great book. I've been cooking all day, made turkey soup, hash browns, apple crisp and raisin-cranberry oatmeal cookies. Just right for a cold, rainy day. Our snow is almost gone. My snow wish didn't work this time and it is just yucky outside.
