Rev, I hope your daughter is feeling better.” 4:56:59 AM 4/29/08 “Croup. I've heard about it all my life, but not often since childhood. Never in my medical career. What exactly is it? Hope your daughter is okay, Rev.” 5:35:00 AM 4/29/08 “croup usually occurs in infants and children <4. It is an inflammation of the throat and larynx. It constricts the breathing passages leading to difficulty breathing and wheezing. Adults are not usually bothered by it since their airway is larger and it takes a buttload of gunk to clog and congest it. She is fine. Back in school today. Predazone is the apparent treatment.” 5:53:10 AM 4/29/08 “Glad to hear she is okay. I never really knew exactly what croup was and just associated it as an illness infants get.” 6:00:09 AM 4/29/08 “Croup!?! Wow...you'll understand my reaction when you read below...by the way, rr, I hope your daughter is better...it's kind of a scary thing... It's 33F now but temps were in the low 20's last night. They are predicting snow showers this Saturday... My lower back is getting better after yesterday's Celebrex but I had a very bad swallowing issue yesterday afternoon...it feels like stuff goes down as far as my lung then gets hung up...and, from what I can see, that is exactly what happens...everything I try to swallow ends being coughed back up...very unpleasant...body refused to swallow anything...even water...having trouble this morning, also....I am hoping today's wonderful smelling hot coffee will tempt my throat into accepting it... Goody...that makes a nice change...I'm kinda afraid to eat anything, however...that's what got me into trouble yesterday...tried to eat some alfredo pasta...definitely did not work...it's hard to gain weight on just liquids...I look at food, real food, and want so much to be able to eat it...sometimes I buy something, knowing I will not be able to swallow it, just to taste it...knowing this is how my life is going to be for the rest of my life is not making me full of positive cheer right now... Stop whining, Mata, dammit! The sun is shining and sooner or later it will stop snowing and freezing...this too will pass....” 6:57:49 AM 4/29/08 “Yeah it is scary... and she's back at the ER again. School nurse called and said "It's Back" so off she went. I alomost expected this... but didn't want to create the problem by projecting it. Mom called off work and took her over cause that's what "the girl" wanted. Sick girls pretty much rule the roost.” 8:46:27 AM 4/29/08 “afternoon! I can't imagine not being able to eat Mata, I feel for you and RichB. Hope you can keep soemthing down soon!” 9:41:50 AM 4/29/08 “Lots of morning hugs.... Mata....I hope today is a good day for you!!! ..I miss Nowslimmer....I am going to email his daughter ...it is just not like him to be gone so long.... ...I have 3 more days of work until summer break...wooooo hooooooooo!!!!!!! ya'll have a GREAT day!!!!” 2:29:51 AM 4/30/08 “Good morning, it's freezing outside, 31 degrees, but at least the sun is out. Matahari, I hope the eating will improve for you in some way. I can't believe Wednesday is here already. Not my favorite day of the week and the days are going by too fast.” 5:00:30 AM 4/30/08 “My daughter made a 6 hr trip to the ER yesterday. Sounds like a horrible long time but not too bad under the ER guidelines of "no one gets in or out in less than two hours." They poked and prodded and tested and looked and waited for the results of the poking prodding testing and looking. The upshot is... She got croup... So now everyone knows whats what and she will be dealing a whole lot better. The cold weather is actually better for her. So we are not complaining too hard.” 5:05:00 AM 4/30/08 “Good morning, guys...as always, thanks for the good wishes...I woke up determined to try harder to raise my calorie intake... ramblin rev...how and what do they do to treat croup? anyone seen or heard from Nowslimmer lately? Happy hump day! ”6:29:14 AM 4/30/08 “They said this is a viral infection... which in doctors terms means "We haven't the faintest idea what is causing it... byut we'll bet if we don't do anything major it will go away by itself." So they pushed some prednison on her for three days just to feel like they are doing something. After all... we all know how much doctors love to meet the patients demand for pills, even when the demand isn't there. All cynicism and sarcasm aside... It is a wait it out thing, Let the inflammation and what ever is causing it subside. It is not life threatening I guess. Mostly annoying and frustrating. Flamingo's grandmother wouldn't couldn't eat solid food so the caregiver got a juicer and scurched up an entire salad so the old lady could suck it down. She was in her 90's at the time and heading for the check out aisle. But that may be a way to get things past your throat, unless of course you have tried that already. A blender would leave the fiber in it which could be an important thing. For what it's worth.” 6:46:20 AM 4/30/08 “afternoon! I was offered a bunch of creepy meds at the docs on Monday as well, what's up with that? I don't need no vicoden or hydrocodon for bronchitis.” 10:04:57 AM 4/30/08 “Good morning, It's nice out so far, but showers are moving in for later. I wish we'd get a good soaking rain. We need it. I slept 5 hours last night and that was better than the 2.5 I got last Wednesday night. One of the bad effects of steroids, insomnia.” 5:01:21 AM 5/01/08 “"The girl" is feeling some pain moving around in her back. It was in her neck yesterday. Stupid prednizone. I won't take the stuff. She's looking a little bloated which is also a classic side effect of that stuff. Praise God they only gave her three days of the stuff. I fully expect to have to go get her early from school this afternoon. The school nurse doesn't want her in school I guess but as long as she is able to go... we'll send her.” 5:09:17 AM 5/01/08 “mornin'... Austin woke up with a very swollen lymph node in his neck - he looks lopsided...since he's been/is sick, the doctor just wants to watch it...he's in school, but I talked to his teacher so she knows what's going on.” 5:54:36 AM 5/01/08 “Gosh Ya'll get better quick!!! It a beautiful morning here. The Brandi Dog is feeling much better...I didn't have to scrub carpets full of poo today which is a good thing!!” 6:37:28 AM 5/01/08 “Good morning everyone :D~~” 7:02:48 AM 5/01/08 “Wow, lots of sick kids...that sucks... Hooray hooray the First of May Outdoor necking starts today.... that dates me, doesn't it...anyway, 56F and sorta sunny... ”7:22:42 AM 5/01/08 “LOL!” 8:35:27 AM 5/01/08 “Good Morning hugs from Lower Alabama!!!!! WOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!!...my last day of work until June 2nd...woooohooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!! I will leave next week for Ohio...woooohoooo...to visit my daughter & family...not sure if I am going to make trail days or mom's day campout...I really want to spend time with my daughter....we'll see...I'll take my backpack in case I can sneak away!!!...maybe I can squeeze in a trip to SIPSEY on my way home!!!! ..I hope everyone gets to feeling better!!!!....not fun to be sick...even worse to have a sick child!!!! ...and everyone have a GREAT weekend....we have work in the yard to do & a cookout Sunday!!! lots of hugs!!!” 2:36:20 AM 5/02/08 “I emailed Claudia (Nowslimmer's daughter) @ her myspace & her regular email...I will let everyone know what her reply is!!! ...maybe he doesn't love us anymore :( naaaa....to know me is to love me!!!!” 3:07:52 AM 5/02/08 “Good morning, We had some thunderstorms overnight and it's gloomy out. I'm going fly fishing or bike riding with a friend this weekend. Not much else going on. Maybe I'll tie some flies or make a few crafts over the weekend. I have to cut the grass too at some point. Have a nice weekend everyone.” 5:03:52 AM 5/02/08 “47F and raining...I'm going back to the clinic to get another batch of antibiotics...I've given up fighting late afternoon fevers and night sweats...I cough so badly at night I can't eat or drink anything and that sucks...I'm ready for more antibiotics...pneumonia is such a drag! Meanwhile, it's Friday and that is never a bad thing unless you live here...we have had rain and unseasonably cold weather for the last 5 Fridays...sigh.... last edited: 5/02/08 6:08:57 AM” 6:06:28 AM 5/02/08 “I hope they can come up with something that will work. That's terrible having an infection like that last so long. Maybe ask to see if they can do another sputum test so they give you the right medicine. I had a lung infection in in 2006 and it wasn't getting better because it turned out the antibiotic I was one wasn't effective on that strain of bacteria in my lung. I think it was called enterobactor. Another time I aspirated some food, I went into the hospital and stayed on Leavequin IV drip and that eradicated the infection after 4 days.” 6:18:43 AM 5/02/08 “mornin'! I tell ya, Mata, if the doc hadn't offered up an inhaler, I'd probably shoot myself. Monday she asked if I was sore from coughing (yes) - I guess that's where the offer of vicoden came in - for a while last night I wished I'd taken it - especially since the kids think they need to sit on my lap while doing homework...like trying to cough with a cement block on your chest, LOL...(quite like pnuemonia, I imagine) I remembered the inhaler, and what a relief. It's Xopenex HFA whatever that is...” 6:22:53 AM 5/02/08 “I'm kinda screwed insofar as test have shown that every time I swallow anything, some of it goes into my right lung...I know I should have another sputum test but it takes a week to get results and I want to stop coughing yesterday! I have an inhaler but it doesn't stop the coughing...my blood oxygen isn't bad...I'd guess around 92 or more...probably less in the evening...I never turn down a script for Vicoden...it's a great drug to have around just-in-case...of course, I love drugs... be careful, twigeater, I cracked a rib coughing...talk about pain!” 6:58:05 AM 5/02/08 “I've heard of that Mata, I can't imagine how hard you must have to cough to do that...” 7:44:23 AM 5/02/08 “Good Morning Hugs.....tis Monday the first day off of my summer break...woooo hooooo!!!!!...I figured I would sleep in (since I had trouble falling asleep last eve) and I woke up @ 4:30am....Lee had preset the coffee pot & I woke to the smell of coffee....isn't that sweet???...he is working nights...how did he know I would be up this early???...habit...lol... ..I have a million things to do before my adventure North....I want to get as much done as I can today, so I can chill...one thing I am doing is going out & working on my tan...yesterday was a BEAUTIFUL day...low 80s , sunny & breezy!!..& today is to be the same!!!...I burn easily, so I won't be out too long...lol..... ..I ordered a new pair of backpacking pants & some chaco sandals...I hope they arrive before I leave!!! ..I hope everyone here is feeling better!!!!... hugs...” 3:03:46 AM 5/05/08 “Good morning, I had a so so weekend. I woke up feeling sick Saturday and never made it out of the house. Sunday, I went fishing for a few hours and caught a bunch of trout, but they were all small.” 4:58:29 AM 5/05/08 “Yummmmm....trout.....Karo made some wonderful trout at TC one year!!” 5:50:25 AM 5/05/08 “mornin'! I didn't have any energy until Sunday, but I seem to be getting a little better...” 5:51:59 AM 5/05/08 “"The Girl" is home today more out of precaution than need. She seems to be getting better particularly now that she is off the prednizone. She has usually crashed bad in the afternoon so we'll see what is going on.” 5:56:57 AM 5/05/08 “Had a bad night (fever of 101F and uncontrollable cough) last night...something got stuck on my dead right vocal chord...at least I ate pretty well before that happened...so, it was nice to wake up and see so many colorful birds at the feeders outside our bedroom window... ![]() last edited: 5/05/08 8:09:13 AM” 8:07:22 AM 5/05/08 “hope ya'll get to feeling better soon!!!... ...I have a job interview today!!!...wooo hooo!!!!!! 10:30....wish me luck....LOL..altho I would work regular hours, and make more money, I sure like my time off I get @ the University ( winter, spring & summer breaks!!!)...but then again, I am poor....and my Escort will not last forever...someday I will need a new car!!!” 4:04:34 AM 5/06/08 “Good luck on the interview. Got up way early for me today; business in town. I convinced myself I had to get up at 4:30 to prepare and all I've done is surf the web. Hard habit to break. I watched t.v. last night for the first time in more than a year. Quickly reminded of why I stopped. There's nothing. If what's on t.v. is an accurate portrayal of the values of our society, we're doomed.” 4:51:05 AM 5/06/08 “..LOL..I know what ya mean Nimble...I watch the weather....that's about it....crime is sooo bad down here...I don't go out after dark and don't go many places alone!” 4:56:22 AM 5/06/08 “Good morning, another nice day on the way around here. I went for a mountain bike ride last night wound up with a sore neck and didn't stay out for as long as I would have liked. Divinity, good luck with the interview. Matahari, get well soon. As far as watching TV, to me the food channel is one of the best stations on cable. No violence, educational and so many good looking foods. The Do It Yourself network is good too. Nice home projects and some very cool craft shows.” 5:05:15 AM 5/06/08 “"Then Hansel and Gretel pushed the witch into the oven where she burned up. Now children... how do you think that felt?" Morticia in The Addams Family” 5:10:51 AM 5/06/08 “lol...rev....sheesh... RichB...try yoga!!!...slow stretches & breathing...!!! ..& we don't have cable here...only get 3 channels..lol....if I had cable it would be on 3 or 4 channels...The Weather Channel, Food Net...History Channel, & Speed...yea baby!!!” 5:13:50 AM 5/06/08 “Good luck on the interview, divinity.. Neck better this morning, RichB? Awake yet, Nimbelfoot? I'm trying meditation to get things under control as drugs aren't working by themselves...another fever last night...sun is shining, birds are singing and it's supposed to get warm today...in the 70's. Spent some time in the Interstate...the St Croix River has flooded and there are small ice floes flying down the fast current...I want my fevers to end so I can do some hammock camping in there this spring while the river is flooded...it's a cool time to camp...fevers, BEGONE!” 5:23:46 AM 5/06/08 “My neck was better a few minutes after I got off the bike. I'm just glad it didn't last. It happened because of the chemo drug I'm on. It causes body aches and pains, along with some other nasty things. Side effects are coming on strong for the last few weeks and I have 6 weeks left.” 5:30:23 AM 5/06/08 “Big HUGS to Mata & RichB!!!!! ...can ya tell I have the day off???? last edited: 5/06/08 5:38:38 AM” 5:35:03 AM 5/06/08 “Ge better, you two. I had bad dreams last night, so I feel exhausted this morning. I've had too much caffeine to go back to bed though. Too much to do around here, anyways.” 6:15:47 AM 5/06/08 “RichB, do you think your increased circulation may have an effect on how quickly the body absorbs the drug...increasing the side effects? I'm glad you felt better so quickly. Matahari, Great idea. The body heals best in a restful state. Rest and be lazy and heal. I pray you get back to normal soon and can do what you really want to! Div, how did the interview go? Or is that today? I worked my butt off yesterday. Today I need to finish unpacking camp stuff so I can start packing for RRG tomorrow. =) Mow the back yard, take Mom in law to the airport, do laundry, yadda, yadda, yadda. Already got my walk/run in and drank my two cuppas. I really need to get off this computer and get moving. You all have a good day. Enjoy the sunshine.” 7:09:39 AM 5/06/08 “Sass, I don't know about increased circulation increasing the side effects. They did say to get some light exercise to maintain energy levels. What I do know is when I was on 40mg of this drug I had few side effects, normal blood counts and plenty of energy. At 80mg, this is a different ballgame now. Toxicity is building up by the week and I'm feeling sick each day. I'm bleeding from too many places from wounds that just open up wherever they see fit. My blood counts have dropped out of the normal range so now I have no energy, numbness in more places as the days go by, along with mouth sores and ugly rash. They are all common side effects, but it really sucks dealing with them and they aren't going away for a while.” 9:45:12 AM 5/06/08 “Man, I've got NOTHING to whine about...how much longer to you have to take 80mgs, RichB...does the does HAVE to be that high? I hate chemo...they bring you to the edge of death's door in hopes the cancer will die before you do... I have enormous admiration for you, RichB... last edited: 5/06/08 10:19:44 AM” 10:19:11 AM 5/06/08 “I've got another six weeks to go at 80mg of Taxol. My oncologist at Penn said to cut the dose if the numbness gets so bad that I can't hold a pen to write or my blood counts get too low. So far I'm not at that point. Last fall, at 40 mg this drug didn't work on the cancer after 4 weeks, but caused a wound in my neck that blew my throat out so I had to stop. This time I'm letting it go at 80mg unless something happens that they make me stop. They could reduce it a little or give me a break for a week, but for right now, I'd rather just get it over with and recover when the smoke clears in June.” 11:19:11 AM 5/06/08 “RichB, The peripheral neuropathy is a direct result of the taxol (all the "Tax" chemos do this), killing off your capillaries. Some of the work I do most often on the Onc. patients is specifically for Chemo induced peripheral neuropathy. If you'd like I can email you the protocol we give our patients to do at home. It really works. If you talk to your doctor about it all they will do is prescribe lyrica, which has it's own set of side effects. The massage protocol we do was originally developed for diabetics w/ neuropathy. The woman who developed the integrative medicine department and oncology massage program I took came up with it. It is amazing.” 3:42:21 PM 5/06/08 “19,700th post...wooo hooooo!!! ..my job interview went well today....but I have to wait for an interview with the Judge...scarey stuff.....” 6:20:02 PM 5/06/08 Jump to Page << prev
