My sons (18 and 20) are into Shao-Lin

It has had a great influence on their lives, added discipline, which is something they have always avoided or fought at any cost.

Pathman - "Shao-Lin" looks good. I see some similar things there, like weapons defense and breathing. And the added discipline and confidence build-up is great, too, for anyone.

RE: Shao-Lin

They have advanced quickly, I wondered if it was a sham, but it seems legit. They still need to learn to manage anger and appropriate use of force. To them is a real macho/power thing. It is funny thought, they had me checking out Art of War and I Ching.

Captain Benny's Half Shell
I ran into an oyser Nazi in Houston. This tiny place that is or looks like a shrimp boat with the hull buried in the ground. I ordered a dozen raw the half shell and a dozen fried. The guy at the bar wouldn't take my order unless spoke the words and ordered two orders of each (1/2 doz to an order). I was a little looped, he refused to take my order and both of our voices escalated till my wife and friends pulled my out.

As far as coffee, try and stop me. ;-)

My Dad is a black belt in Isshinryu Karate....

Sort of a similar situation maybe as you?

In his late 30's he had cardiomyapathy (spelling) he was given about 1-3 years to live without a heart transplant and was reduced to about 25-30 overall function of his heart...

They told him he would never be able to work again, which greatly upset him because he was a talented carpenter.

So anyway he started working out, stopped smoking and any alcohol, and started martial arts.....

10 years later he is back to work and off of disability...

At one tournament he was lucky enough to meet the top guy, I believe he is from Japan? He was in the locker room....and got a picture of himself standing with him...

Also the dojo he was working with had this one guy come from Spain that I guess is pretty high (even has his own trading cards, like a baseball card)...he taught his style at the dojo for a while when he was in the States....

But to answer your question... I do not have any training but I've always liked the concept behind Aikido and if I ever get the chance I would like to learn.

I looked up a site in Isshinryu Karate. (The image is a link to it.) It is interesting. We do practice some of the same things.

Your father has done well. That's a great achievement. My situation is a little similar. My cardiologist said that my exercise program is the only thing keeping me alive. I received five bypasses 13 years ago after a cardiac arrest. In aikijutsu, which I started three years ago, I have a green belt. Brown is next, then black, if I make it. I do have to make adjustments because of some other handicaps in the knees and eyes. I was sold on aikijutsu, when after one month I threw a brown-belt giant, 6'6", 345 pounds, using a technique that I had not even practiced. I caught him off-balance, leaning forward.

I was never impressed with martial arts until I got into it. Now I strongly recommend it. One or two years ago the Marines started a new policy. Every new marine has to obtain a black belt in some martial art by the end of their second year. Modified, non-contact martial arts taught in nursing homes has reduced accident rates by 50% and more. There's something there for everyone. So, go for it. Make your own opportunity. BTW, I am 71. I am the oldest student by nine years in the parent organization, which has many types of matrial arts groups in four continents.

Best wishes to your father.

Thanks for the site..I actually was on that site when I looked to make sure I spelled it properly...

As annoying as Steven Segal is, his background in martial arts is impressive...

He learned Aikido from the top guy!
