Good morning everyone. I still hate DST! Getting Laurel up on time this morning was tricky, let me tell you! I need to bundle her up and out the door to my Mom's house this morning, then off to help my Dad out again. If I keep this up I might as well be part timing for him and my neck will never heal! Of course, washing and detailing the car for 3 hours and prepping the back doors for paining yesterday did't help matters either.

Before my Internet connection stops, my only details are: I will be busy in Appleton, Wisconsin, chasing some old girlfriends on June 18-20. Then I expect to arrive at Anvil Lake campground early evening on June 20th. Things are open for me after that.

Eventually, I will get to White Bear Lake, Minnesota, for a few days. Then down to Grinnell, Iowa. I'm busy working on a new way to avoid seeing Lizs, while enroute. I'm sort of running out of excuses! Can you imagine she applied for an editor's job with her main experience listed as "Trail Talk posting!" Just thinking about it "is making me soooooooooooo sick!"

It's beautiful day here in Lake Woebegone.... waitasecond. WherethehellamI?

Oh Yeah... The golf nuts started pulling in over the weekend, staggering up and down Washington Road, trying to peek in the gates at the golf course. The way they step into the road it's a wonder lots more of them aren't run over every year.

Extra points if they're wearing extra-loud golf pants....

Up extra early today to help my wife get on the road to a job interview. Nice me got the coffee going at 4:30, took care of the pets, etc. Now I could go into my office early...or I could turn on the computer and check into TT...hmm, work or weirdness...hmmm.

Hey nowslimmer, I've got June 20-21 marked on the calendar (I'll be teaching summer courses on Tuesdays and Thursdays). It'll be the summer solstice!

Amazing what coffee will do and to think I missed it the first time. Making coffee for your wife at 4:30, feeding the pets etc sounded like the loving actions of a selfless husband. My 2nd reading after being fueled with my first cup of coffee picked up on the key sentence: "help my wife get on the road to a job interview." Now the plot thickens. Working wife = more gear. Lol. You're smoother than Nowslimmer and are now my new role model.

Yeah, Snake Eyes, if I don't mind her being away from home. Three hour drive to the interview in Madtown, so she is still on the road now (and I'm now at school). Arranging two careers in one small town is nigh on impossible, so she's scoping the opportunities in the city. I already told her that once the kids' college is paid for, the extra income will go straight into the sailboat fund, lol. Longterm plan -- Great Lakes in summer, Florida Keys in winter (was it the Everly Brothers who sang, "Dreeeeeam, dream, dream, dream..."?)

Morning all. Oh, my neck and shoulders! I'm pumped up with lots of vitamin I to even function without being totally afraid to move. I may try one of my beloved Bextra tablets, as they do wonders for severe knee pain on the trail. I thought I'd take it easy yesterday but NOOOO my Dad had some bigshot new customers coming in for a visit so I did a thorough high speed cleaning of the entire business and the monetary compensation just doesn't seem like enough now. I'll go snitch his fancy gel icepacks out of his freezer! Yeah, that's the ticket! Then I'll feel better! Lol! You know you hurt when the application of a large icepack to your upper back feels really, really good and makes you relax.

pekka, how did the interview go for the wife?

Woohoo! It's supposed to get up to a nice warm 48 degrees here today. We're seeing the sun for the first time in over a week.

We had a bear come to the back yard bird feeders last night. I have them strung on a line between the 2nd story of the house and a tree about 25 feet off the ground and 25 feet from both the tree and the house. Smart bear...he climbed the tree and was trying to get the wire cable around the tree to break so he could get the birdfeeder to the ground. I'm glad I used wire cable rather than just tying a line around the tree. I pulled the bird feeders in on the pulley system I rigged up from the upper deck before he could get to them. I hope that didn't just make him mad. I took some pictures, but the bear was about 30 feet away and it was nearly dark so the flash didn't work so well. The birds will just have to find other food for another month or so until the bear stops visiting.

I'm having a hard time adjusting to the time change. I can't get myself motivated to do much when I get home because I think I've got plenty of time since its still light out. And then I look at the clock, and realize its getting too late to get much done!

Supposed to be another nice day here, but I'm working late tonight, and then going to the library to study. Soon, I will be able to enjoy life a little bit more. Its been hard to have my boyfriend around all week and ask him to go find other things to do so I can study. :(

Ski, it's too bad they don't make paintballs filled with capiscum or something like that. You could bust a couple of those on him every time and he'd get the hint in a non-lethal way.

I saw a program once on people doing research in polar bear country. Now, polar bears are the top predator in their environment, and therefore fear nothing. The encampment these people had set up was surrounded by an electrified fence. In the interests of conserving energy (they had to generate all of their own) they only electrified the fence when a polar bear was actually biting on it. They used a two-prong attack: They would electrify the fence and and at the same time, fire a couple of "crackers", (essentially blank shotgun shells), thereby setting up a Pavlovian connection in the bear's mind between the sound of the cracker and the pain of the electric fence. This helped protect them when they were away from camp, because they always carried a 12ga shotgun, loaded with a couple of crackers, followed with, (I think) slug rounds. Apparently this worked pretty well.

Day Light Savings Time is a joke.

All this swtiching around can't be very good for the system.

I've had the most time "off" (or, non-working evenings) than I've had in 2 months. It was nice to spend the weekend and the past couple of nights with the family. I almost forgot what they looked like!

Anyhoo.....it's supposed to get nice here today, I've heard up into the 60's?? Of course, I have to work tonight, but I'm taking Thursday off (after I give my notice to my employer that they will have to replace me in 30 days) and then....

Well, it's my fault for having the bird feeders around after April 1st. I really thought I'd hung them high enough, but those bears are pretty smart and they remember where they've gotten food in the past. Last fall, we had a bear foraging through the sunflower shells and stray seeds that had fallen to the ground. He never climbed the tree to try and get the feeders down, though. Oh well, I guess I go back to feeding the birds from late November until the end of March. I'll save a fortune in sunflower seeds. With six feeders, I can go through a 50 pound bag in a couple of weeks.

Then again, I may test the theory by putting the bird feeders up again in another month or two when there is more to eat for the bears. I think I'd be pretty hungry and willing to go to some great lengths for food if I'd been hibernating for four months, too.

Skiracer- I only have destructive squirrels and raccoons to take care of with my bird feeders. Problem is they destroy the whole feeder trying to get the food. I'm investing in this nifty steel feeder soon.

I can actually move without too much pain this morning, so I'm healing. The trick is to not do anything in the next several days to aggravate it again.

treebait, we have squirrels and raccoons, too. The squirrels cannot cross the line to get to the feeders and the birds spill enough to keep them happy. The raccoons also eat the stuff the birds spill.

We gave up on filling our array of feeders because of the grackles and starlings who invaded and drove off the other birds. It was just a big mess as the grackles scattered any seed they didn't like to get to what they did, which emptied the feeders quickly. The starlings then hit what was on the ground (though the mourning doves made out well on that too, if they weren't driven off by the grackles).

Now the grackles are the first birds back, setting up their territories in the tall pines around our house and those in neighboring yards. I was hoping that lack of a free buffet who dissuade them, but not so far. My karmic instincts have cautioned me about giving in to my desire to get a BB gun at Wal-mart and start dissuading in a more permanent way. But man, the screeching they set up, not to mention that I miss all the nice birds we used to get in our yard.

Good morning,

Great display of nature last night. Not quite dark and it started to rain with a light breeze from the west. It smelled like summer with the strange aroma of warm rain drops striking a hot dusty road or steamy blacktop. To the west was clear blue sky and a beautiful sunset with jagged red streaks eerily approaching nearby storm clouds. Lightning flashed on all sides. Roadside deer calmly munched on the shoots of early grass. Patches of snow reluctantly gave up their grip on the Northland, and I watched through flapping windshield wipers while eating chocolate chip cookies, knowing why I moved back.
