No, stumprider, we don't have pizza delivery in the small town of Mohawk. :(

nowslimmer, There's an idea! If I spike the eggnog, maybe no one will complain. LOL Actually, people were taught not to complain in my household.

I remember the first time I made stuffing. It came out green!! LOL No one said a word but no one ate any either. Aaaaaah... memories. :o)

sunshine, I was fortunate not to be at my niece's first attempt for Thanksgiving dinner. She didn't bother to clean out the cavity of the turkey--so it was roasted, complete with the bag of gibblets. Her dad carved the turkey, saw the bag and just kept on carving and didn't say a word, until a few years later.

Oh yuk! How could she miss the "icky bag"? I had green stuffing one time, due to celery and fresh herbs, but actually everyone liked it. It was inhaled. I don't have time to make it like that anymore though.

Good morning everyone. Last night I finished a project I've been working on. I added 3 ounces of 800+ fill power goose down to my 20 degree sleeping bag by cutting a small opening in the baffles and restitching it. What a difference! The loft is now 7 inches and I'm sure I'll get no cold spots since there's little chance the down can move around in the baffles. This 800+ fill is simply amazing and an incredible miracle of nature. I only found 4 small feathers in the entire bag. The stuff is like snowflakes. It blows up and expands like nothing I've ever seen. I can't see how man will ever make a better insulator than this. Well, maybe someday way in the future.

Where did you buy 800 fill down that was not already sewn into a product?

From Thruhiker.com It was $24 for 3 ounces and at my door in 2 days. Great stuff and I'm already thinking of some other things to make with it. An ultralight quilt maybe. The shipping was $3.85 I think. They have some nice things for making your own gear. I like the fast service too and the guy seemed nice when I spoke with him by email.

Rich, if you add goosedown to an existing bag, doesn't the fabric constrict the loft, since it was a finite size?

Didn't do anything to him...he got his name because he took it upon himself to feed and care for the geese which summer at a pond in the office complex his wife manages...

An office that I used to work at would put wooden swans out on the pond to discourage the geese, but they gave up when they kept finding the swans beheaded.

so this brings up the age old question... which has lower shipping costs... a pound of steel or a pound of feathers...

Yes it will only loft as far as the baffle material in the bag. I did some research about this before I started the project and checked the baffling in my bag to see what I could gain from it. When you add down overfill the main thing you achieve is minimizing cold spots because there's enough down to fill in all the gaps if say a knee or elbow would press against the bag. After looking at my bag I could tell I could gain quite a bit of performance by adding down so I went ahead with it. Feathered Friends claims it adds 5 degrees when their bags are overfilled, but I think I gained more warmth than that and will know for sure what I gained when I test it in the next cold snap. I slept OK at 18 in it, but I think now it's good to 10 at least in a tent. I move around when I sleep so I think it will definitely help.

Anybody up out there? Did you get out and enjoy Indian summer yesterday? It was in the 60's here yesterday. I went up into the mountains to flyfish and after hiking in a few miles I unpacked to put on my waders only to find out I forgot the insoles to my wading boots. The fishing wasn't that great so I just went hiking for the rest of the day. Beautiful day though and we still have some fall colors out there.

Mornin' Rich. I'm getting ready to head out and meet Pennsy Hiker, SirPete, and some others. They've been hiking since Thursday, but I was unable to join them due to the neck injury. I feel up for the dayhike though, and after wasting most of the day yesterday playing video games, this will be much welcome!

Good morning, folks. It is overcast here in Florida this morning. But mostly sunny and a high of 81 is the prediction.

First day back to work yesterday in months was OK, but I kept wishing that it was my last day of work. Learned that the company stock, private, had droppped way down in price. So I have to keep working until it recovers. I hope it happens in this lifetime!

Last night I drove to Orlando and had dinner with an old highschool friend (class of '50)and his wife. There are down here from Chicago and our last visit was in 1977. We had a very enjoyable evening.

Have to work today, but Monday will be great. I'll be off.

Enjoy your day.

I'm up early this morning, for a Sunday anyway. Woke up in the tent in my back yard. The local state park was full because of back-to-back Widespread Panic concerts, so we decided to camp out in our back yard. We cooked hotdogs on the grill, then later I toasted marshmallows on it to make S'mores. It's been really mild here yesterday and today, and except for a few sprinkles, the weather has been perfect.

I got early to let the dogs out. It was dark and raining. I layed down on the couch. You know the story, just for a few minutes until the coffee is ready and then I'll take a shower. Two hours later, my daughter wakes me up asking, "Don't we have Sunday school today?" Oh, BAD Mom!
