Nowslimmer, how is your eye? What is up?

Tilt, stay dry, make some coffee to put into thermos for later when you lose power. Well that covers the important flood prep stuff.

They finally got the roads cleaned up after some bad weather. More rain is on the way tonight.
I got a used sewing machine, but I have to take it to be fixed, so I can't wait to start making some cool backpacking gear. I have a bunch of things on the drawing board to make.

Rich good luck with the sewing machine. What are you planning on making?

I want to make a few insulated water bottle holders and bags. An ultralight hydration pack for mountain biking. Make some alterations to a tarp. Sew up a pair of overbooties of Gore Tex fabric to totally keep out the elements and a pair of lightweight waders for stream crossing. Probably make some clothing items too.

I'm making some new hipbelts with evazote foam and maybe some shoulder straps. I'm thinking about making an ultralight pack that can comfortably carry 40 pounds, but I have enough packs now so I'll have to think about that one a little.

I've been thinking about oversized waders for stream crossings for some time, too... large enough to simply step into, boots and all... something like knee-high mukluks, perhaps, or maybe above the knee. hmmm.

Lost
Good morning, everyone. Hope you all have a great day.

Tilt - You lost me with that last link. I guess you're just pointing to some of the 'stars' of Washington.

LyndyS - The jel or jelly (vitreous humor) has separated from the retina, or at least, part of it. It is something that can happen in old age. I have to return every week for six weeks so that the doctor can watch for tears in the retina. There were none visible yesterday. Ten years ago I came close to losing the other eye from a detached retina.

Now I have to wonder if this is natural or if I jarred it in aikijutsu class. Next, is a re-evaluation of whether or not I should continue in aikijutsu. I really enjoy the classes.

Previously, the doctor had warned me that any hard blow or hard bounce on the mats could cause this other retina to separate. So, I try to avoid taking the hard stuff, but concentrate on throwing the others.

richb - Sounds like you'll be busy for a while. Good luck with your projects.

And now a gift for the man who has everything.

Outdoor wilderness fabrics sells a fabric that can be sealed with an iron to make dry bags. I think this would work great to make waders and would be much cheaper than buying a pair from Wiggy's.

Thanks Nowslimmer, I'm looking forward to getting started. I can't do anything until I get this sewing machine fixed. I hope to take it over today.

Nowslimmer, be careful with that eyesight! I had a detached retina and they were asking me if I got hit in the head. I of course said "Hmmm I don't know. ... What day is it?"

Seriously I think it was due to all the pickaxing I was doing trying to plant bushes and trees in the crappy baked clay and rocks we call soil here in my part of NJ.

I hope that you don't have any additional detachments. Take care of your vision, it is one of the most important keys to enjoying the rest of your life.

RichB: Good for you! Most of the time the old, used sewing machines are higher quality than the ones that are made today. Most of the new models have all plastic parts, metal on the older ones.

I wonder if you should be looking for an iron at the thrift shop to seal up that fabric?

Slept 'til 9am again today! WOOOHOOO! =) The kiddo's still sleeping.

Speaking of vision...

I visited my dermatologist yesterday to have a mole check - I have a HUGE family history of skin cancer. All is well there, but she urged me to have an eye exam, you can get a type of skin cancer on your retina! Did you know that? I havn't had an eye exam in over 10 years. For sure one of my New Year's resolutions.

Sass, the machine I took to get fixed is a 1938 Singer model 201-2. It's in a beautiful old cabinet and is in very good condition. The wires that go into the switch and motor were pulled out when someone removed the machine from the cabinet.
I have another older Singer, but I haven't researched when it was made yet. It used a foot pedal to sew by pressing it back and forth to turn a wheel with a belt. That's still on there, but my grandmother eventually put a motor on it as an add on. The machine still works with the motor or manually. These things are built like tanks and just to lift them is a chore.

My grandmother has one of those old Singers. The thing is bulletproof. She's been using it for more than 60 years, I think.
