wifes first post
Well, I thought about posting for the first time on here the whole way back from Montana. About how there are so many wonderful people who are TT ers

I always wondered how he (prowler) could take off into the woods with a bunch of complete strangers and not even worry about the type of people that they are. After I met many, and saw and felt how great a lot of you were, I finally understood.

I cant believe how truly hidden so many of you kept your feelings twords us up there.

I am not going to go into complete detail of defending our situation, because he (prowler) already did. But, we DID plan for this one day up, one day back trip. YES, we did have enough gear (which most of the essentials were in my pack, which all stayed in my pack on the way down, and no one saw the contents..He carried the heavest kid and heaviest gear, me the opposite, which landed me with most of the essentials).

YES, we did have extra food just in case. I thought that people were being increadibly nice, and also lightening their loads, by donating some snacks for the kids.
I guess I was wrong about that too.

Some had suggested staying an extra day, which we had not planned for to see some of the seanary that we had missed, (which I guess started the donating thing).

Anyways, I am a mother who will rarely do anything without my kids. I dont want them to spend all of their childhood vacations in hotel rooms, or at carside campgrounds because backpacking with them may be a little "risky". I love nature and the outdoors, expecially the backcountry. The peace and serenity that it provides, as well as the endurance limits that it pulls you to. I want my kids to experiance that from the beginning.

Even though I have held out on backpacking because I had felt my kids were too young before, I have been backpacking for about 9 years, and neither he nor I drug our kids into the woods unprepared.

This trip had really gotten me reared up for it all again, even through Prowler getting sick, untill I heard the increadible judjment on us in here.

Wife continuing..
It is hard being a mother or a father of small children, I nor Prowler, would NEVER put our children in danger, they mean more than anything to us. It is not like we tried to trek the 25 miles to fit what we wanted to do, we chose the 7 one way because we knew it was within our limits with them. Prowler is in better shape than me, and goes out with a pack on his back about every weekend, but I made it because I did not get sick, It could have happened to any of you, we still do not know what exactly it was!

Fate did play its role, and we did have wonderful people helping us out. I do not like to pass judjment on anyone that I do not know unless it is good, I still have wonderful feelings twords most of you, just think that some are very quick to judge.

He was NOT overmedicated, just because he carries pills, 2 are perscribed, and one is herbal for your joints!! He also is not 50 lbs overweight like someone stated. Take 50 lbs off of him, at 6ft 3, and his big bone structure, and you will have someone very out of proportion!

Im sorry to thoes who thought we "crashed " your thing and went by ourselfs, but when you have small kids, you dont sit and socialise in an enourmous water playground! Prowler was being a good husband and father by following us instead of soialising.

Thank you again for the food at the bottom, my offer still stands like I said from the start to pay for it. (I had food in the truck, but what tired hiker doesnt want some harty meaty food :) )

Thank You again to everyone, even to thoes who passed an extra smile my way when I had to leave him in that bad of shape on the trail. Hopefully I told you enough there, and you all should know who you are. My apology also goes out to anyone who feels that they deserve one from us. And thank you to thoes who understand, and didnt just add to how bad he felt about it anyways. I did enjoy the presence of everyone, and hope the hostile feelings will sometime sease with knowledge.

With love, Kym

I have never "met" prowler, but I find it hard to believe that he exhibited any gross negligence. It appears from everything I have read (and if I accept it all as being true) that there were mistakes made, but nothing I can see as being overly serious. I commend you for taking your children with you. Far too many times, I see parents leave the children behind.

I personally would not go backpacking with children so young, but I fully believe that it is a decision to be made by an individual. If you feel comfortable with it, go for it.

I cannot pass judgment on Prowler from what I have read on this board. From what I know of him, I could not believe that he "disregarded" the safety of his family.

Chili & Tango, trust me this is NOT a place you take a one and two year old, especially unprepared. It's not a stroll in Ohio. Hikers with experience and who have acclimatised can have health complications. These complications can be life threatening, as were his. Think of the ramifications of tanking children of that age up there. Had Tx, and others, not gotten this guy stabilized, this would have been as entirely different thread . . . and much sadder.

Having known Mike and Kym for quite some time now.. I hope the negativity seen in the Montana thread is meant to be tongue in cheek. They are both great people, who love their kids, and make time for family over everything else.

Even if Mike made some error in judgement, we all do. Personally, I have no idea if he did or not. Either way, I would gladly hike with Mike and Kym anywhere, anytime. They are both fine folks. Whatever happened in Montana, I am glad that it was not any more serious than it was. I would hate to have lost the two of them as hiking friends.

Everyone has their right to their own opinion; I was there and have formed my own based on what we had experienced prior to his arrival and what transpired afterwards. I'll state it again: this trip took a lot a of planning by me and the group. It was not by accident or luck that we had no major problems until that last day.

aero, I have no doubt that you put a lot of effort into the trip. I certainly wish I could have been there.

Also, from what I gather (from your posts and discussions on various threads), you certainly don't seem to be one to form a "bad" opinion too easily.

I can easily see where it was a frustrating experience.

Kym: Hopefully the doctor who prescribes the Paxil is a psychiatrist. Hopefully this doctor knows about all the other prescriptions. The doctor should know about P's marijuana use and about this mishap.

You seem like a great person. P seems like someone whose heart is basically in the right place and who is trying to do right by people, but who could be handling his problems much better.

Please do some research on marijuana and its relationship to depression, anxiety and medications.

Email me if you want more info.

Its the wife again..
Yes, a psychiatrist one the one who intitially perscribed the paxil. Im not a doctor, but I know what he is like with it and without it, and believe me, him with it is so much better off, Im not sure why it even matters in this case truthfully!

Everyone is so diffrent, everything effects each person diffrently, and unless you are that person, you have no idea on the effects on anything to that person. There are so many diffrent sides of marijuana, in many cases can be good and others bad,I dont have a strong opinion either way. Im just not sure where you get the impression that he sat around and smoked all weekend.

Whats done is done, I value everyones opinions, and feel that most value mine as well. As far as not being in "Ohio" We have both bacpacked in Ohio maybe one time, the others are all over the contry, including more strnuous than what we did, and at about equivilint elevations

Oh well, whats done is done, I just hope that Ill get a chance to hike with some of the great people whom I met on this trip again, and that people can stop being judgmental.

Huh, seductive picture, maybe youd have to talk to prowler on that one..:)

i think ya'll were a lil hard on these folks. they wanted to have a perfect time just like the rest of you & it's selfish to think it was YOUR trip. garfum got sick before our hike & i was understanding and concerned, not bitter.

nobodies perfect....everyone learns something from each hike. even if you are more experienced that doesn't make you a better person. i am ashamed of your self ritious, immature behavior. i thought you people were cool, geesh......what goes around comes around...you'll get sick out there someday and maybe someone will think you ruined "their" hike.

glad you made it back ok prowler and family! i would have helped you as much as i could and NOT complaned about it after you were gone.

Prowler, you must be one hell of a backpacker to generate hundreds of posts. I'll bet some of the posts were done in fustration of not knowing how you made out. Even though we have never met, I heard good things about you through mutual backpacking friends and I am GLAD you are O.K.

P.S. When you get better, if you want to turn in the guy who sold you the pot, I'll help you out.
