Stupid new show
They (OLN) are giving 12 'regular' people the chance to summit Everest and will be put it in several shows. They start eliminations in a desert in Africa then onto several other different harsh environments to get the number down to the 12 that will try to summit. I see another tragedy in the making!

One wonders sometimes if people really understand what they're getting themselves into. Just because something is exciting and 'cool' doesn't mean it's a good idea. Just because I would love to do that doesn't mean I should or could. You know what I mean?

I agree with you Skully and Artex. It's not on network tv it is on outdoor living network. I think it will be on May 2003, I just saw the commercial, watching Lance!!

LOL, they are going about the eliminations all wrong. They should first try and find the people who are most susceptible to HAPE or HACE, and get rid of them first.

As far as tragedies, well, who knows. If they get good guides and listen to them, they'll probably be okay. I've been mulling it over in my head whether A) a producer who knows the show won't go over well if no one summits, or B) a professional guide who doesn't make any money next year if no one summits, would be worse.

Doesn't sound that bad...
Heck, the STANDARD requirement is a thick wallet.

In this case, the people will at least under go some physical testing. That's good.

Therefore, it sounds a lot better that the usual groups of "climbers".

I can just see Rudy or Richard (Survivor) climbing The Big E. But will they have all the disagreements and arguments like the other reality shows? Could be bad.

If Rudy did it, I think he would be the oldest person to climb Everest. I could be wrong though.

Everest Base Camp would be a great place to film a reality show. It's a circus already, from what I've read. Plus you usually still have enough energy to actually have an argument.

bit--Did you see the Imax movie Everest? It was great. Amazing. If I had the chance I'd see it again.

I was wondering too if they will be taking the cameras to the summit. I guess we'll see what we shall see!

After reading "into thin air" and where you had to go through just to get to the glacier below base camp, no thank you. Late snow pack or no, I won't go through what I refer to as S__t town.

I agree with treebait. Harrowing. I read that book too. But that Imax movie was tremendous. I also just saw Alive! the movie about the Uraguay soccer team whose plane crashed in the Andes. Cannibalism. Oh my!!

Do they get to vote other "climbers" off the show, or just push them off the mountain?

The mountain does the voting.

I've never seen the IMAX movie, tango, although I've seen the non-IMAX version of the same film. We even have an IMAX theatre right here in lil 'ol Huntsville, and I've only gone to it once. I'm such a cheapskate.

I've read two books on the Everest Disaster of '96. I still would like to to try it, even if I had to go through #&%!$town, but I probably will never get the chance. Besides, I'd want to actually train on and climb, you know, other mountains first. So I might have some idea what the heck I was doing...

bit--I love elevation, and would love to do more climbing (yeah, I love trying to suck more air into these sea-level lungs). But I really have no desire to come close to the regimen that I read must be done on Everest. No way.

Good luck to you reaching your goals!

I'm fascinated by Everest, and the expeditions to climb it. This show is giving me big incentive to write to my cable company and tell them to get OLN (gee, I'm sooooo sure they'll listen).

Yeah I watched that on OLN a few weeks ago. Considering the amount of time & effort and the great personalities they had covering it (Peter Athans, Conrad Anker, Peter Whittaker) I felt it could have been done better.

It was still great to actually follow a team on summit day though. I was glued to the set.

“Everest: Beyond the Limit,” which begins its six-week run Nov. 14 at 10 p.m. ET on Discovery Channel, chronicles the journey of eight men during the 2006 spring climbing season — the second-deadliest on the Himalayan peak that rises over 29,000 feet.

Hey girl! It's going great. Kinda hectic sometimes. It's beautiful here. I haven't hiked for awhile either but that's because I have no time. Hopefully that will change soon.

Sorry about the knees. What a shame. I send good thoughts your way.

Thanks for asking Bateauxdriver! It's starting to slow down now. I just got the pool closed and now there's a lot of maintenance stuff to do over the winter. I hope it's a mild one, especially on this Florida girl. Hope all is going well with you.

2nd season
Everest Beyond the Limit starts this coming Tuesday with new climbers I think it is on Discovery or Discovery Times channel. I think I heard a woman's voice on the commercial.

I'll probably watch the first episode. I did watch the first series.

Anyway FYI.

i went to the discovery channel's web site. the lack of respect is remarkable. i was ok with it all until i saw "sherpa cam video". it's amazing to me that people forget that for all intensive purposes anyone entering the "death zone" is dying from their first step in until their last step out.

i wonder if they show all the o2 bottles strewn about or the wasteland of frozen turds. i also wonder if they really talk about the dangers of the khumbu icefall which, in my mind, is the most dangerous part of the western approach. frankly this has always freaked me out more than the aspect of enduring the slug up to the hillary step just before the peak where you are as likely to die of hypothermia standing around waiting your turn as anything else.
