Buffalo River Trail

“I'm interested, but I've already tentatively got the TC2 in early December planned. However, this trip sounds like a good one.”

It looks like we can either plan a hike to begin at Boxley and hike on though Ponca, Erbie and to Pruitt (complete thru hike that would allow anyone to get on or off trail as needed). Or, we can base camp at Kyles for a couple of days and those of us staying past the weekend can hike on to Pruitt from Kyles.

The base camp idea would allow for some good dayhikes into Hemmed in Hollow and and Indian Creek.

My first thought was to thru hike it. However, I am now thinking that a base camp with dayhikes into HIH and Indian Creek might be the best plan.

Majority rules. Any thoughts?”

i really am not a cold weather person. i mean i'm tougher than hell but it's just not my preference. i used to hunt alot and have camped in 2 feet of snow before(that SUCKED) so i can do it. also we traditionally visit lots of family during the holiday season, travel alot...so there's that factor involved as well.”

In Arkansas the average high temperature in January is 50 degrees. The average low is 33. In my book these are perfect temperatures for extended backpacking trips. If you can hike 10 miles in 85 degree weather you can hike 12 when it is 50 degrees.

A fleece jacket is not very heavy.”

“We could base camp on the upper Buffalo a couple of days, then move down river to Rush.

I would say Steel Creek or Kyles for the first few days (FR/SA/SU)?

But if we plan on hiking into Hemmed in Hollow, we will have to cross the Buffalo twice each day (over and back). The alternative would be to drive around to Center Point or Compton and hike in from the North Side.

“I don't think crossing the river is gonna be a big deal. When I did it there were good crossings everywhere.”
