I am at the planning stage of a hike on the BRT. One plan is to hike it from Boxley to Pruitt.

The second alternative is to hike the OHT from Fairview to Woolum and the BRT from Woolum to Hwy 65.

Has any work been done to connect the BRT from Pruitt to Woolum?

What are the current trail conditions?

When are you planning this trip
If you haven't set any dates yet,May I suggest the first weekend in Aug or the Last. I'd be able to join you for a sat/sun hike. Arrival friday nite and depart sunday afternoon. The only downside is I can't bring Khatru on this hike. I would like to get down to some of the other areas like sylamore, so that I can bring him along. Leashes all the time, but thems the rules at the NR.

November or December are great. August on a trail up there is nuts. Even Tim Ernst says that in his books. October on is nice, especially if you time it right with the Fall foliage. I bet Mozark and Tex would be there. Maybe even Jerbear.

yeah yeah yeah
that's more like it, we are gonna go back (maybe) for a labor day canoe trip...3 dayer. your invited of course. But I am goin to hit the current on the first weekend of Aug and then the 11 points on the 24th and the 25th. Your invited on those trips too...

water water everywhere and even more to drink...I'm gonna float down stream and try not to sink.

jgeils, I have trips planned in Sept and Oct.

I am thinking the latter part of November or possibly between Christmas and New Years.

A New Years eve on the trail maybe?

I say the best time would be between Christmas and New Years. However, I am open for suggestions. I have trips planned for last week in Sept; third week in Oct; first week in November; and December 7. There is a small chance that I will scrub the trip to Big Bend in November. If I do, then a BRT hike in November would work well.

I am thinking about doing 35 miles in 3 days. It would appear the first two days would be about 7 to 8 miles each and about 15 (it gets pretty flat) on the last day. This is just a preliminary look at it. Three and a half may be more realistic.

I say that should be the time then.

Let's get a little more information as to the trail then we can set the dates. I would say at this point that if we started on the 28th, then we could easily get from Boxley to Pruitt (36.5) miles before the First. We could probably have time for Hemmed in Hollow (5 mile loop) as well.

Thank goodness we don't have to worry about that!

Well, this sounds like a good trip for Mozark and the resident TT EMT, Tex.

I'm still planning to do Sipsey in late Sept, but my other plans are sketchy right now. I'd be interested in a BNR hike, please keep me posted.

Plus, Prowler I'll be your body guard iffin ya need me! :-)

A few comments from the Ozarks!

Avoid the section of the OHT from Fairview to Woolum until after October if you dislike
poison ivy.

The weekend following Thanksgiving is normally good.

I'd recommend the BRT from the Boxley trailhead to Erbie.

I would be interested in hiking from Woolum to the BRT.

Jgiles, Stikmon, Chili
They just opened up a new section of the Ozark Highlands Trail near Sylamore. It is
approximately 18-20 miles in length. We would be some of the first to hikers to hit that section of trail.
This is on my "to do" list either this fall or spring of 2003.

So many trails and too little time!

Dang Bacpac you really should join us sometime. Any thoughts on joining a trip with a limited number of creeps?

Moz, how about the BRT from Boxley all the way to Pruitt?

Some may not want to do the entire trip, but if we begin at Boxley, those who need to leave the trail by Sunday or Monday should be able to get a shuttle from Erbie. The rest of us can go on to Pruitt.

The new section of the OHT definitely deserves some consideration though. My original thought is that I wanted to hike the BRT from Boxley all the way through. However, from what I can see, if go from Boxley to Pruitt (35 miles), we still need a shuttle to get from Pruitt to Woolum to complete the 15 miles to Hwy 65.

Instead of doing that, I would be more interested in making a "side" trip into Hemmed in Hollow.

Mozark, I really want to do that new section. When it gets cool I'll be ready to go. That section wouldn't be much of a drive. I could get there in about 2.5 hours. Not many good places that close to me.

November weekend hike at the new section
I NOTHING planned for November. Meet friday nite hike sat/sunday and then home...I'm all over that. Mozark...set the dates and lets do the dance.

I am only available for weekend gigs, outside of already planned trips. So, If ya'll are planning on longer, I only need to park my vehicle somewhere near a sunday escape route and then you all can hike on, anyone that is offtrail on sunday, I will shuttle back to the TH. With that said...lets get packin and plan some great trips...

I do need to make sure that I leave a weekend or 2 to get down with the Tenn bretheren...walkindude and opie and bitpusher...but the sylamore is where I want to be...this fall...

We got the Sipsey reunion coming up in September, stikmon. You got a September trip planned yet? That's in Alabama, BTW.

Last 4 days of sept
and the first 4 days of Oct I will be in Utah, hiking the Grand Staircase with Stratusloop and The Donald.

I would love to come to the Sipsey trip, but distance prohibits a friday drive to and a sunday drive from. For something like that, I would need a 4 day weekend...after the first of the year...all bets are off and I get to start over...

But....... and new years hike is the ticket to end the year in the woods and start the new on in the same fashion...I did that this year and I have been loving every moment of 2002. I will have to meet you guys on NYE and camp with you and then hike on NYD and then come home...no more vaca days to spend...they are ALL accounted for...I can't wait to tally up my bag nights for 2002. This has been a stellar year to date. Make the NY hike close to home chili...this way I can max the time with the group.

Chilli,

Put me down on your mailing list for BRT Dec 28th weekend. That is a good idea to start at Boxley and let people choose their own exit. The trail is basically in 8-10 mile sections which makes it convenient to jump in or out!

I'll probably only hike for a couple of days myself depending on vacation days left in December.
