“Man shoots dead two friends after celebrating engagement by firing machine gun, police say

AMMAN, Jordan - A Jordanian man who fired his machine gun randomly to celebrate his engagement shot dead two of his friends in the process, police said on Sunday.



The man, who police only identified as Mohammad, was detained during his engagement party on Saturday in the village of Numanyiah near Karak, 150 kilometers (83 miles) south of Amman, the Jordanian capital.

A police spokesman told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity that officers were questioning the man and may charge him with murder.

Mohammad started firing his machine gun in the air after his prospective in-laws accepted his proposal to wed to their daughter, the police spokesman said.

Police said he lost control of the gun as it was still firing bullets, shooting dead two of his friends, identified only as Amir, 24, and Ibrahim, 24.

Two other guests, aged 14 and 16, were seriously wounded, the spokesman said. Mohammad's father suffered a heart attack during the incident and was hospitalized in Karak hospital in a coma.

Jordanians celebrate special events by firing guns despite government warnings against the acts, which have killed tens of people in the last decade. A law enacted last year imposes sever punishment and fines on people firing guns.”
