I need suggestions for a tall pack...
Ok, I'm a newbie to this site, though not to packing, and I need to start what I'm sure is to be like the hundredth thread on packs, so sorry for that, but I have a 24 inch torso and am having a hard time finding a good fitting pack. Any suggestions? And let me say greetings to all and thanks in advance to anyone who helps out.

How's the weather up there?

Sorry.

Check out Mountainsmith packs, a lot of their packs can accomodate longer torsos.

Can you dunk?

Same w/ Osprey! They are very adjustable for torso size.

Dana Designs Arclite and arcflex packs fit up to a 23 inch torso.
Don't know about 24 though.

Whatever you get it will have to be the largest size they make.

The best thing for you to do is go to a Rei or another store and let them help you get fitted for a pack.

Good to hear that some brands might accommodate my freakish proportions. When I have the chance I borrow my dad's old camp trails external frame. He's also a tall dude so it fits, but since I moved out of state I get stuck with other borrowed models that definately don't fit.
Yeah I can dunk and the view and the weather are usually pretty nice up here.
I probably should head to the store to be sized up, good idea.

Mchale Packs. Dan will customize one for a long torso.

Also check out Jack Wolfskin the Trailhead III which is a large pack but for tall people like yourself.

McHale packs
do you actually have a Mchale pack and if so how do you like it? I've heard so much about them but never seen one. Do you order with your measurements or do you have to go in to get one made?

I know two people, one who is very tall, who went to Dan Mchale's shop to be measured. They both are very satisfied with their packs.

Dan McHale is the way to go. He is about the only one that can fit a long torso properly from what I have read.

It's torso-length, not height
I'm only 5'10" but have a prodigious torso. One time I met a friend of a friend while sitting in my car. Later when we emerged, the guy said that when I was sitting he figured I was way over 6 ft. I guess that most tall people also have long torsos. But check it out. That's the determining factor. Anyway, with my long torso I was once professionally fitted for a Dana Designs Extra-Large sized Alpine Overkill (a monster pack I like to use in winter 'cause it has a shovel pocket... damn thing goes over 7k cu. and about 8 lbs.). My usual hiking buddy is 6' 4" and is comforable in his two major packs, a Mountainsmith Ghost and a Kelty framepack (Super Tioga?).
