Well, I like to think it's my backyard...
"We recommend that anyone who is planning a trip to this area should call prior to leaving home for the most recent updates on road closures and evacuations."

That reminds me of a few years ago in Florida! The smell of smoke was so pervasive. How close to your house?

Not very close ...I'm a flatlander
25 to 30 miles as the crow flies...but that's my local stomping grounds that are a blaze

Grab your wife and kids, leave all essential food and gear at home, over medicate yourself and become a problem for your companions.

...At least I think that is what you do in case of fire.

Our local newspaper said ...
They had to evacuate 400 Boy Scouts from Camp Whitsett.

I was reading that while Sequoias can (and have) survive fire, there is a lot of underbrush that could serve as fuel to bring the flames into their high branches. Some environmental groups have blocked plans to clear the understory and their misguided efforts could end up destroying these treasures. I hope some of the more radical elements are paying attention.

I have a firm belief that people trained in forestry, natural conservation, etc. are in best position to determine sound conservation practices. Environmental groups should direct their actions toward supporting sound practices, not in demanding practices that meet immediate concerns.

WW, to bad to hear about your "backyard". The fires here got to some of my favorite places as well. I hope they get the fire out soon!!

Camp Whitsett was my son's first summer camp in scouts. I understand it is a nice place.

Hope they get it under control.

National Wildland Fire Information
I use this site to keep up on what's burning where:

www.nifc.gov/information.html

I wish we could keep a big super-soaker in orbit and just dowse the flame with a squirt or two.

I heard they found a guy in a scuba suit that had been scooped up along with water to fight the fires! Anyone else hear about that?

So they are saying that about this fire huh?

I heard that story about 10 years ago and it was proven fake.

Urban legend? You mean like diseased left feet and noxious substances found in backpacks?

That's exactly what I heard HPM. It's really weird that it could have been fake then but now has actually happened!

News story on fire

Man that sucks.

I don't understand why they didn't mention the frogman deal. That's such an unusual story.

Violin - Didn't you see the story in the paper? It was right next to the story about the woman who put her poodle in the microwave to dry it.

The pictures I have seen of the fire are heartbreaking.

WW, really sorry to learn that... I assume they're working hard to contain things... sure hoe it ends NOW!

Any signs of it heading into northern parts of SeKi? We're probably gonna be pretty far away, on the JMT, but when I was there last year around this time, there were fire crews and trucks going every which way, some parked along the road just waiting for the call... and hoping it never came.

Got anything on direction of travel and potential areas to be avoided?

Unless things have changed it hasn't reached SeKi (Park service)only the Sequoia National Forest and Monument ( Southern Sequoia Groves ) are in flames at this point. I have two friends who are near the Trail of a 100 Giants doing battle with the blaze.

The scary part is... there is tons of down and dead trees and lots of underbrush to fuel this beast in that area.
