A boring job will kill you.View Messages“hey wolfman, there's a lodge for sale on the north rim of the Grand Canyon. ;-)” 10:07:46 AM 7/26/02 “Director of Operations (life was soooo much more simple when I only had to negotiate the contracts)” 10:23:04 AM 7/26/02 “Sr. RF Engineer working on radio modems for Bluetooth and Wireless LAN applications.” 10:32:34 AM 7/26/02 “marketing manager for a children's hospital out west. first time I have gotten to use my skills for the good of mankind...lol... pace is slow, but the benefits are great.” 10:48:00 AM 7/26/02 “Maintenance guy for a manufacturing plant that makes over 5,000 refrigerators a day. Where do all of these go ? I work on the equipment that makes these. I mostly do electrical control work but we also do everthing else along maintenance lines. We work as a multicraft department but we each have our own primary skills. BTW I enjoy it and wouldn't want to do anything else. BAMA” 6:07:43 PM 7/26/02 “Systems administrator. I'd like to be a farmer, though, so I could be a leech on society like Gordon.” 6:15:24 PM 7/26/02 Stumprider “I majored in sociology as well. I did mostly theory so I ended up working with a lot of profs from different departments as well. My experience with Hyde Park was that it was dark. Can't explain exactly what that means, was just sort of a vague feeling about the area but it made me want to move to Utah.” 9:33:12 PM 7/28/02 stumprider, one more thing? “Were you by any chance one of the two people who climbed Denali?” 9:35:14 PM 7/28/02 brooks “No Denali, tho would like to. Hyde Park--not limited to the neighborhood, have expanded to see much of the city. Who was your advisor?” 12:14:18 AM 7/29/02 “I was only an undergrad, so only a ba, but my advisor was Patchen Markell who is actually in poli sci. I would probably have hit up Glaeser except he was in Germany for the year. Who is your advisor? I asked about Denali because maybe three years ago two guys made the climb with some support from the outdoor adventure club and from EMS as well. I liked most of my profs in Chicago a lot and I'm actually considering applying for grad school next year in sociology but I think if I do I'd live outside Hyde Park and commute in on the metra.” 12:36:39 AM 7/29/02 brooks “If you want to talk off the forum, click on my moniker and you'll find my e-mail address. Advisor is Linda Waite, Dissertation is on Marriage & the Family, which I should be working on right now, but it's time to get some sleep. If you have some questions about returning to Hyde Park (the campus is really different from 3 years ago), I'll help as best I can.” 1:02:35 AM 7/29/02 “I'm a Combat Correspondent in the Marine Corps, and Thursday I get promoted to Sergeant.” 2:33:44 PM 7/30/02 Boring Job “I transport max security inmates & it's rarely boring.” 11:26:30 PM 7/30/02 “do you get to beat 'em with your nightstick, alot?” 11:29:27 PM 7/30/02 “Never carried one.” 11:34:20 PM 7/30/02 “what do you beat them with, then?” 11:42:10 PM 7/30/02 “why do you have to beat them? I treat them well & they treat me well. Works for both of us.” 11:44:53 PM 7/30/02 “i don't have to beat them! that's YOUR job!” 11:51:08 PM 7/30/02 “Sorry, no beatings.” 11:52:39 PM 7/30/02 “Did you see "The Green Mile"? Neat flick!” 2:27:21 AM 7/31/02 “This was a very interesting thread.” 10:07:57 AM 7/31/02 “I'm at work now. You guys are a hazard to my continued employment.” 10:10:45 AM 7/31/02 “You people work for a living? Hmmmm...I'll have to try that. (Note: the preceeding statement was sacrcasm and intended only as humor. Please do not try being unemployed at home, it is not for amateurs. Leave it to the professionals.)” 10:16:18 AM 7/31/02 “sacrcasm? Is that a disease or something? Sounds painful...” 11:50:31 AM 7/31/02 “I have the summer off...how boring.” 12:21:14 PM 7/31/02 “Phil, You can always write a screenplay for an "Adult Feature."” 12:30:06 PM 7/31/02 “Phil, I took all 3 summer sessions and it sucked my life blood out. I will never do it again. I think your boring summer rocks.” 12:56:47 PM 7/31/02 “Is that why you're so white in those pics? Not that there's anything wrong with that...” 1:02:24 PM 7/31/02 “Ah, to be young again and have summers off. I miss those days.... I used to spend months on the road. Now I'm lucky to get three days off in a row Sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't have become a teacher so would still have my summers free. My heart yearns for the road and the trail.” 1:17:06 PM 7/31/02 “Ouch!” 1:17:20 PM 7/31/02 “don't worry, newgirl, i'm just as white! it's either transparent-white or red, with not much in between. good picture, by the way :-) AND, we won't look like old wrinkled bags in a few years, SO THERE! seriously, when i see people who are really tan, all i can think is that they are slowly cooking themselves...mmm, chicken.” 1:20:36 PM 7/31/02 “Bitpusher- Sheeesh! don't get on newgirl's case for not having that deep, dark tan! Man, she'll still look hot when she's 40, instead of all wrinkled up!” 1:23:25 PM 7/31/02 “dang, lyra ya beat me to it!” 1:24:27 PM 7/31/02 “My wife is similarly white, except for the freckles. She insists on forgetting to put sunblock on and getting fried in the sun. It's become a running joke with us, to wit: The other night, we were discussing her attending TC2, and she said she had been trying to come up with a trail name for herself, without any success. I waited for a minute, then suggested, "Red". Her reply was, "But my hair isn't that red..." I said, "I wasn't talking about your hair..." I almost had to go sleep on the couch that night.” 1:25:37 PM 7/31/02 “I guess this begs the question: What could be worse than a boring job? A boring job in the sun.” 1:26:17 PM 7/31/02 “warped minds, as they say...” 1:28:02 PM 7/31/02 “true dat, aero. i get lots of freckles too, but only on one side of my face. weird!! it's my dark side showing through, i always say... :-D” 1:30:54 PM 7/31/02 “Bitpusher- I guess my suggestion, "Whitey", wouldn't have been much better..” 1:31:55 PM 7/31/02 “My wife is the prototypical, red-headed freckle-faced kid. My dad is exactly the same. You'd think I'd have red-headed kids, but no, they both have light brown hair. My daughter has a darker complexion, like me, and my son is as white as a sheet. Go figger.” 1:33:22 PM 7/31/02 “I thought about that. But given how long the last thread with "Whitey" in it lasted, I'm afraid she'd be banned.” 1:34:40 PM 7/31/02 “Just doin' some cyphering here.. I think blonde and maybe red-haired genes are recessive and brown is dominant. So you take yer big B and a little b and another Bb and you can end up with a suspicious blend of family traits. Hopefully none of your kids look like the UPS man.” 1:38:46 PM 7/31/02 “Maybe if I roll the genetic dice a couple more times?” 1:42:58 PM 7/31/02 “I've been teaching full-time for 20 years and only really taken a few summers off. I normally have something going on, whether teaching, consulting, or otherwise. My wife is working more since I am at home with our youngest daughter, Debi. Debi is 15. She has is independent, but has Down Syndrome and we can't leave her home alone. Debi and I go to Disneyland a lot...about once a week during the summer (annual passes...very economical). If I want to go hiking, then we have to have her covered. She likes car camping, so maybe we will do more of that.” 2:32:23 PM 7/31/02
