Maintenance guy for a manufacturing plant that makes over 5,000 refrigerators a day. Where do all of these go ? I work on the equipment that makes these. I mostly do electrical control work but we also do everthing else along maintenance lines. We work as a multicraft department but we each have our own primary skills. BTW I enjoy it and wouldn't want to do anything else.

Systems administrator. I'd like to be a farmer, though, so I could be a leech on society like Gordon.

Stumprider
I majored in sociology as well. I did mostly theory so I ended up working with a lot of profs from different departments as well. My experience with Hyde Park was that it was dark. Can't explain exactly what that means, was just sort of a vague feeling about the area but it made me want to move to Utah.

stumprider, one more thing?
Were you by any chance one of the two people who climbed Denali?

No Denali, tho would like to.

Hyde Park--not limited to the neighborhood, have expanded to see much of the city.

Who was your advisor?

I was only an undergrad, so only a ba, but my advisor was Patchen Markell who is actually in poli sci. I would probably have hit up Glaeser except he was in Germany for the year. Who is your advisor?
I asked about Denali because maybe three years ago two guys made the climb with some support from the outdoor adventure club and from EMS as well. I liked most of my profs in Chicago a lot and I'm actually considering applying for grad school next year in sociology but I think if I do I'd live outside Hyde Park and commute in on the metra.

If you want to talk off the forum, click on my moniker and you'll find my e-mail address.

Advisor is Linda Waite, Dissertation is on Marriage & the Family, which I should be working on right now, but it's time to get some sleep.

If you have some questions about returning to Hyde Park (the campus is really different from 3 years ago), I'll help as best I can.

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Ah, to be young again and have summers off. I miss those days....

I used to spend months on the road. Now I'm lucky to get three days off in a row

Sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't have become a teacher so would still have my summers free.

My heart yearns for the road and the trail.

don't worry, newgirl, i'm just as white! it's either transparent-white or red, with not much in between. good picture, by the way :-) AND, we won't look like old wrinkled bags in a few years, SO THERE! seriously, when i see people who are really tan, all i can think is that they are slowly cooking themselves...mmm, chicken.

Bitpusher- Sheeesh! don't get on newgirl's case for not having that deep, dark tan! Man, she'll still look hot when she's 40, instead of all wrinkled up!

My wife is similarly white, except for the freckles. She insists on forgetting to put sunblock on and getting fried in the sun. It's become a running joke with us, to wit:

The other night, we were discussing her attending TC2, and she said she had been trying to come up with a trail name for herself, without any success. I waited for a minute, then suggested, "Red".

Her reply was, "But my hair isn't that red..."

I said, "I wasn't talking about your hair..."

I almost had to go sleep on the couch that night.

Bitpusher- I guess my suggestion, "Whitey", wouldn't have been much better..

My wife is the prototypical, red-headed freckle-faced kid. My dad is exactly the same. You'd think I'd have red-headed kids, but no, they both have light brown hair. My daughter has a darker complexion, like me, and my son is as white as a sheet. Go figger.
bitpusher

I thought about that. But given how long the last thread with "Whitey" in it lasted, I'm afraid she'd be banned.

Just doin' some cyphering here.. I think blonde and maybe red-haired genes are recessive and brown is dominant. So you take yer big B and a little b and another Bb and you can end up with a suspicious blend of family traits.
Hopefully none of your kids look like the UPS man.

I've been teaching full-time for 20 years and only really taken a few summers off. I normally have something going on, whether teaching, consulting, or otherwise.

My wife is working more since I am at home with our youngest daughter, Debi. Debi is 15. She has is independent, but has Down Syndrome and we can't leave her home alone. Debi and I go to Disneyland a lot...about once a week during the summer (annual passes...very economical). If I want to go hiking, then we have to have her covered. She likes car camping, so maybe we will do more of that.
