Commemorating 9/11 by hiking!View MessagesHiking the 48 in NH “A group of hikers (including MadRiver) are commemorating the WTC attacks by raising flags from each ot New Hampshires 4,000+ foot plus mountains. People did this from many of the peaks last year, on the Saturday immediatley following the attack. On Saturday Sept. 14th they hope to have largen US flags flying from noon to 2pm on all 48 peaks. Other flags are welcome to fly as well, since people from may other countries were died at the WTC. Some of the people involved in the original commemoration lost loved ones in the attack. If you plan to be in New Hampshire, you can sign up to take part at: http://flags.alpinezone.com/ " target="_blank"> http://flags.alpinezone.com/ Other people are already talking about raising flags on other peaks in other states. I'm hoping this will be a success in NH, and will go national.” 2:20:09 PM 7/25/02 “Great idea, IMHO. I remember seeing flags after the attacks on some NY peaks (Breakneck, and a few randoms in Harriman). That's cool they're getting organized in NH to do it.” 2:41:35 PM 7/25/02 “Was out at Shining Rock last year on 9-11. Didn't even know it had happened until two days later. Will be hiking in NC same time this year, after the Durham Blues Fest. Put me down for taking a flag with me to some high point in Smokies.” 4:27:30 PM 7/25/02 “We have no peaks in FLA! }:(” 8:36:02 PM 7/25/02 “Tango....hehe you could goto hooters to place flags on their peaks!!!” 8:42:01 PM 7/25/02 “yep - that would look great on the Tetons” 6:35:56 AM 7/26/02 “Would it really?” 7:57:14 AM 7/26/02 “I've passed the message on to the New Mexico Mountain Club. Its a Wednesday. Sounds like a great excuse for a mid week day off.” 9:22:42 AM 7/26/02 “Oh, I guess it is for Saturday 9/14.” 9:24:38 AM 7/26/02 “You do have a point though Pathman... it would be a great reason for a day off.” 9:33:15 AM 7/26/02 “Opie and HOI--Quit trying to make mountains out of mole hills!!! HeeHeeHee” 6:06:44 PM 7/26/02 Commemorate 9/11 by “Burning an Amerikan flag.” 7:37:54 PM 7/26/02 “I know I am going to plant a tree and I am going to do a nice hike! I will be backpacking that weekend and when I get home I am going to plant a new tree in my front yard! 8D” 8:17:38 PM 7/26/02 “CMB That is a great idea!! I think I will plant a tree. I will be working so NO BP'ing, darn.” 8:39:49 PM 7/26/02 “I thought this is what the army is doing in Afghanistan.” 8:41:00 PM 7/26/02 “I'M sorry that you have to work! Ya I love trees and I would love to plant a new one in the front yard. 8D” 8:41:58 PM 7/26/02 “I have been about a weeping cherry tree. Now I'll get off my butt and actually do it!!” 8:43:42 PM 7/26/02 “Good deal! 8D I like tulip trees. Did I spell that right?” 8:45:35 PM 7/26/02 “Yes you did. Those bring back memories of my childhood. I used to climb to the top of ours and sway with the tree as the breeze blew. It was really tall. I loved that.” 8:48:54 PM 7/26/02 “I think this is a great idea. It would be neat to see the highest points in the fifty states with flags flying (is Denali reasonable in September?). Tango and I could hike up to the top of the Sunshine Skyway bridge - or maybe some bank building in Miami.” 6:01:15 AM 7/27/02 “That would put me on Wheeler Peak! Weather could be a factor, not not very likely. I'd have to drive up Friday night.” 8:03:46 AM 7/27/02 “Big Coop We'd have to go to Britton Hill (where ever that is) it is the highest point in FL 345'” 5:27:45 PM 7/27/02 8:01:35 PM 7/27/02 “Pretty cool Pathman. I was having trouble finding Springer Mountain onTopozone - much less "Britton Hill."” 8:11:43 PM 7/27/02 “I went to 4-7 grade in Okaloosa County, my parents just sold their house in S. Walton Co. to move back to NM after moving away 27 years ago.” 8:27:26 PM 7/27/02 8:30:02 PM 7/27/02 8:36:07 PM 7/27/02 “I can't believe that a year has almost passed since the 9/11 bombings.:( I think I will plant a Weeping Willow. Symbolic for all the children, moms, dads, sisters, wives, parents, friends that have done their share of weeping this past year.:(” 8:36:18 PM 7/27/02 “Thanks Pathman! The panhandle, I should have known. They have caves up there too!” 8:52:59 PM 7/27/02 “Marianna Caves. We used to go there in Cub Scouts and school field trips.” 8:53:42 PM 7/27/02 How celebrate 9/11 “Do BIGGER, BETTER things. Praise be to Allah.” 10:43:48 PM 7/27/02 Wheeler Peak “It is a two and a half to three hour drive to Taos ski area. 15 mile round trip hike. 9,390-13,161 ft. The best way might be to drive up on Friday night, backpack into Bull of the Woods Meadow (2 miles) camp, leave early next morning, summit, return to camp Saturday, drive home Sunday. Interestingly, I posted this to the New Mexico Mountain Club and got zip for response. Are you going to be here, Prowler? I'd probably take flag folded in pack, use my trekking poles that fit together as avalanche probe.” 7:41:40 AM 8/08/02 “Thought I'd bring this back up, I'm still planning on going for Wheeler Peak. Cairn, you interested? Prowler may be. Anybody else?” 7:36:07 AM 8/13/02 “ ![]() Wheeler Peak, New Mexico September 14, 2002” 9:07:38 PM 9/15/02 try that again “ 9:09:16 PM 9/15/02 “ALLRIGHT PATHMAN!!!!! Did you plant the flag??” 9:16:40 PM 9/15/02 “Can't you see it?” 9:37:44 PM 9/15/02 “WAY TO GO PATHMAN!!!!!!” 7:04:08 AM 9/16/02 “Kewl Pathman! I'm humbled. I have no pic from my hike and I posted my Flags trip report before I saw this thread.” 12:19:35 PM 9/16/02 “Pathman, you did a very good thing! be proud of yourself! cause I am proud of you :)” 12:21:04 PM 9/16/02 “I'm going on an after work hike, will work on photos and trip report tonight. It was a great trip.” 6:03:23 PM 9/16/02 “I can vouch for the picture. Me and those people calling Dallas on a cell phone. The little flag in the picture was mine. It was still there the next day, and people were reading the names of the victims Pathman left in the register.” 11:02:50 PM 9/17/02 “This event will be taking place again on September 13. 2003. Hopefully, there will be a flag on every one of the 48 peaks in New Hampshire. I’ll definitely be taking a flag to one of the peaks again that day. And, inspired by Pathman’s example I will try to get pics this time around. I know a lot of people did things like this around the country (not just Steiny and pathman) For more info: http://forums.alpinezone.com/viewtopic.php?t=468" target="_blank"> flags on the 48 poll and thread to indicate your interest http://flags.alpinezone.com/" target="_blank"> the info page for project http://www.thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/thread.php?id=15910&age=999" target="_blank"> the other TT thread on the subject ” 5:56:29 PM 6/16/03 7:24:18 AM 6/17/03 “I'll raise the other 9/11 flag memorial thread at some later date.” 4:07:50 PM 6/19/03 Bounce “I just finished a bunch of work on my photopage for the Wheeler Trip and got it linked to my trip log. Commemorate 9/11 by Hiking, 9/14/02 Photopage is in good order except for captions.” 5:17:51 PM 7/04/03 “very nice!” 8:30:50 PM 7/04/03 “Looks like I will have that weekend off since I should be working a new job starting 9/15 or so. I'll do a weekender here in NM somewhere, haven't decided where. Wheeler was great, could go back. Santa Fe Baldy would be good, too.” 2:53:45 PM 8/04/03 “Commemorate it by hiking? It shouldn't be an anniversary, it should be a reminder.” 2:54:59 PM 8/04/03 “It's not my title, see the first posts.” 3:03:07 PM 8/04/03
