Commemorating 9/11 by hiking!

“A group of hikers (including MadRiver) are commemorating the WTC attacks by raising flags from each ot New Hampshires 4,000+ foot plus mountains. People did this from many of the peaks last year, on the Saturday immediatley following the attack.

On Saturday Sept. 14th they hope to have largen US flags flying from noon to 2pm on all 48 peaks. Other flags are welcome to fly as well, since people from may other countries were died at the WTC.

Some of the people involved in the original commemoration lost loved ones in the attack.

Other people are already talking about raising flags on other peaks in other states. I'm hoping this will be a success in NH, and will go national.”

“Great idea, IMHO. I remember seeing flags after the attacks on some NY peaks (Breakneck, and a few randoms in Harriman). That's cool they're getting organized in NH to do it.”

“Was out at Shining Rock last year on 9-11. Didn't even know it had happened until two days later. Will be hiking in NC same time this year, after the Durham Blues Fest. Put me down for taking a flag with me to some high point in Smokies.”

“Yes you did. Those bring back memories of my childhood. I used to climb to the top of ours and sway with the tree as the breeze blew. It was really tall. I loved that.”

“I think this is a great idea. It would be neat to see the highest points in the fifty states with flags flying (is Denali reasonable in September?).

Tango and I could hike up to the top of the Sunshine Skyway bridge - or maybe some bank building in Miami.”

“I went to 4-7 grade in Okaloosa County, my parents just sold their house in S. Walton Co. to move back to NM after moving away 27 years ago.”

“It is a two and a half to three hour drive to Taos ski area.

15 mile round trip hike.
9,390-13,161 ft.

The best way might be to drive up on Friday night, backpack into Bull of the Woods Meadow (2 miles) camp, leave early next morning, summit, return to camp Saturday, drive home Sunday.

Interestingly, I posted this to the New Mexico Mountain Club and got zip for response.

“I'm going on an after work hike, will work on photos and trip report tonight. It was a great trip.”

The little flag in the picture was mine. It was still there the next day, and people were reading the names of the victims Pathman left in the register.”

“This event will be taking place again on September 13. 2003. Hopefully, there will be a flag on every one of the 48 peaks in New Hampshire. I’ll definitely be taking a flag to one of the peaks again that day. And, inspired by Pathman’s example I will try to get pics this time around. I know a lot of people did things like this around the country (not just Steiny and pathman)
