what i learned this weekend was
always move your car when mowing the lawn

now we have to replace the back window :(
the thing is, tree was leaning in the back of the car when the rock went into the window. he heard it but did not see anything
i had no idea till i was sweeping the sidewalk.

SUCKS!!!

Now that you know to move your car,

Do you move the house too, or does your house have armored windows seeing as how you live in Staten Island and all .. ?

ok well i learned something today

if you are going to bury the family pet ie: gold fish, hamster, frog, turtle

please try and remeber where you buried it and also you might want to put it in a baggie instead of a HUGE container. roots from the tree will push it back to the top if not buried deep enough.

i about died when i uprooted the poor little hamster i had forgotten where i buried it. also if your teenager buries it for you, make sure they do not do it in your garden, not a happy sight to see when your digging and "bam" hello to you my once little furry friend :(

now if i find my frog, im giving up gardening for ever :)

shoe box is the best, it will break down faster then a plastic container.

CB, twiggy grad last year and is working at my shelter. she is doing very good :)

I had that happen with rebuilding the pond. I still have Sylvia's legbone out, but I reinterred her clavicle. I was thinking of keeping the legbone. She had surprising ly dense, heavy bones.

Yeah, I know, twisted.

We buried my dear kitty cat out in Memphis, NE, near our store, last November. Put her right in the dirt with no container, but deep enough that nothing will disturb her. Many tears have been shed over her little grave. I found out from my Dad, that many years ago, he buried our old Labrador Retriever out there.

Long before I ever even knew about Memphis, my Dad used to go duck hunting there with our Lab, Bosco. When Bosco got cancer, Dad took him out there, and threw the dummy for him to retrieve a few times, which the dog loved. When the dog brought the dummy back for the last time, Dad shot him in the head with his pistol. He didn't want to have the vet kill him, he wanted the dog to die doing something he really enjoyed. I love my dad, killing his own dog like that is something I would never have the courage to do. He dug a grave and buried Bosco in a meadow near the lake.

Two different family pets were put to rest there, thirty years apart. I guess our family will be tied to that place forever, one way or another.

My kitty has a sweet little cement cat, curled up, sleeping over her grave. It was inexpensive at a garden store and helps me remember she's there.

Sass, that is sweet. My kitty doesn't have a grave marker, but she is close to some manmade historical "features" so I know exactly where she is. When we buried her, she looked so peaceful and sweet, like she was curled up asleep. It made me cry to put dirt on her though, she was always so perfectly clean when she was alive.

TOUCHING STORY
i second that about bosco

i remember reading a story in outdoor life a few years ago about an elderly gentleman that got caught in the rockys by a early fall blizzard.

he had been hunting with his dog that was too old to keep going in the deep snow and had been the mans constant companion since his wifes passing away......he scibbled a note on his topo to his daughter and grandchildren saying that he couldnt leave the dog and couldnt put him down, telling them that it was alright because he was fortunate to pick the time and place to meet his maker and with the dog that he loved, and in the woods he spent his life in, and really didnt know if he would make it anyway on his own......searchers found them both about a week later together

another one that would chock ya up.......

omahiker, i have to agree. that is a very touching story. i have had to put a few family pets down (part of my job) and it is truly gut renching. my hats of to your dad for being able to do the right thing. I often think about what i want to do when it is time for our little pooch to go.

when my mother died, she wanted her cat to be put to sleep at the same time. so my brother and myself took her and put her to sleep. the furnal home was amazing. the laid the cat with my mother and they were both cremated (sp). it ment so much to our family. it was aganist the law but they did it any way.

What an idiot!

He chose to die rather than leave an old dog?

What a MORON!

And you guys killed a cat because your mom didn't want it to outlive her??!!

That's twisted!

As the tears flowed, Dana and Gary Ganyer thought they were watching the euthanasia of Annie, their beloved 2-year-old German shepherd with increasingly frequent and debilitating epileptic seizures.

The decision was traumatic, but the Milford Township couple were certain they were doing what was best for Annie by ending her pain.

Lehigh Valley Local Links
However, in a lawsuit filed April 17 in Bucks County Court, the Ganyers say their grief turned to anger and disbelief when they learned they were the victims of an elaborate deception concocted by employees of Mill Pond Veterinary Clinic in Milford.

Annie was not put to sleep on Feb. 28, 2005.

Instead, the suit says, as the Ganyers watched, the dog was given a sedative to make it appear she was dead. The clinic then gave Annie to a new owner, Gene Rizzo of Northeast Philadelphia, who cared for the dog for nine months until he had her put to sleep on Nov. 2, according to the suit. ...

Well these are touching stories...I remember a few years ago when my girl Daisy had to be put down, it was on this site that AmyG mentioned a rescue group...now I regularly transport Chesapeake Bay Retrievers all over to new homes.
We decided to go with the cremation method after we buried one dog for my parents and their new dalmation puppy dug it up 6 months later while they were at work.

My father in law had us in tears as he related coming home to this GOD AWFUL SMELL. Then the 6 month old female dalmation puppy goes flying through the living room with the right hind leg in her mouth...(GAAAG) in a few hours she had managed to spread the remains in and out of the house. Since both of them are a bit "LARGE" the visual of them chasing this puppy had us in tears.

Personally I find that denial works well. I simply refuse to acknowledge the loss of a pet. If I don’t let them go then they are still here and well. Take my last dog, Buster, for instance. Here’s a picture of him alive and happy on the trail at least 6 months after the vet told me he “expired”.

we weren't so brave with our own dog...
I couldn't bear to take Barney to be put to sleep so I made my husband do it. Well for some reason the dog perked up significantly, while riding in the van, after lying around half-dead for several days. My husband couldn't get the words out to the vet to go ahead & do it. He left him there and told them we would call later. So after he came home I made him call & tell them to euthanize him. We never even went back for his collar. Of course we paid the bill but man we were cowards, and we both cried like babies.

Don't stop checking mouse traps just because you get nothing the first few days or so. Especially if your cat wakes you up in the middle of the night with a fresh one. But that's another story....

Two mistakes people make with mousetraps.

One they use cheese. Poor choice of bait.

Second, if they use peanut butter (best bait) they use too much. Just put a gram on the trigger, make them really reach in for it.

Always, always put the mousetrap perpendicular to the wall with the bait pad toward the wall.

This was a "contained" snap trap. Little tiny black cave-like thing. Idiot proof with the cocking mechanism outside the box. It had a little bucket for about a gram of pb but it had to face away from the wall for them to have access. The whole mouse was suppossed to be inside but the hind legs were quite visible, along with a nice stiff tail.

Do you wonder why Victor has been making them the same for 100 years?......

Because they still work.

Can't remember what it was called but it worked, sort of. I mean it Got one. Those hockey puck shaped "encased" spring traps were crap. All four failed.

I know Victor traps work well but the Wife didn't want to see the results.

I learned that some carpenters will blank off the inside of a finsihed soffit with a large board (for some unknown reason) necessitating 2 plus hours of attempts to feed 4 new light fixtures. I had enough time to hear the entire film "last of the mohicans".
