The top strap on the head;amp isnt all that necessary. A tikka for example weighs like 3ounces or less so the added support of another strap is unnessesary.

I have the Aurora and the Tikka both stay right where you put them .
I prefer the Aurora because the lamp pivots and has multple settings.

If you really want the over the top strap...
Look at the Black Diamond moonlight..has 4 LED's and the extra strap. All of the above are light and good quality so choose the one that best fits your needs.

There are also dozens and dozens of the heavier brighter models.

the aurora ROCKS! because; the tilt feature and the strap is more comphy on yer head. 3 AAA batteries will last 140 hrs i think on low setting, which is pretty bright out on the trail.

Got my Aurora for $3, new!!!
Heeheehee! Aren't the scratch-n-dent sales at REI grand? You'd think somebody would check to see if the batteries are in properly before returning a headlamp that won't turn on. I'm sure glad they didn't, though!

I have the Moonlight and it's a nice light, but if I was looking for a new one now, I'd probably get the Aurora after seeing Lyndy's in action on the OLP trail.

Actually, G00SE gets all the credit for that one. That, and my $3 gortex overmitts, and my $1 packtowel. Ok, I did find the packtowel. He's sure got an eagle eye when it comes to spotting a bargain though!

it's the tikka for me. I even hiked at night with it for two hrs . . . no problems.

I usually can adjust the direction of the light enough just by moving it up or down my forhead.

Aurora's are pretty kewl!! Got my before MT2002. My first and hopefully my last LED headlamp I'll purchase. As Crazy Mike would say 'Hey it rocks but mine rocks harder' The strobes are kinda neat!! I guess one could hang a few from the tent ceiling and dance the night away.

I can't wait to use it come huntin' season!

Mini-mag
I have a Petzl headlamp, but rarely use it. I like holding the AA mini-mag in my hand. If I need my hands, Campmor has an elastic head strap for it. (I carry 2) I LOVE hiking at night in winter, during a full moon.(super carefull around water though)

That strobe on the Aurora came in handy last week. I was getting dive-bombed by tons on moths, so I set it to the slower flask rate. I could still see well enough but the insects couldn't seem to triangulate.

Nighthiking Is OK...If You Have To Do It...
Started out my Cranberr Wilderness hike with a 2.5mi nighthike...missed ALOT of beautiful scenery!

I used to like nighthiking a familiar trail after dark with no headlamp (I carried it with me just in case). It added a cool dimmension to the walk. I haven't done it since I lost my guide however. I also like sitting really quietly in camp with no light.

Night hiking with a headlamp is really only something I would do if I have to get to a particualar campsite. I really hate setting up camp in the dark even with a headlamp.

I have a LARGE headlamp, that I like to put on my head and run down a dark path at night, while playing a recording of a train...and watch people dive into the underbrush, or just stand and stare like a deer in the headlights.
I should be getting out of the hospital soon, maybe I'll do it again.

Night hiking is cool.

Setting up camp in the dark is no big deal. Now KP in the dark well, that ain't fun.

I have a Tikka and being able to hike into my first camp at night has opened up more possibilities to me with my tight schedule. I notice a lot more night hikers since these LED lamps came out.

I saw that Cabela's has an 8 LED headlamp for $25. That sucker must be really bright! It doesn't say how heavy it is though.
