Do many people here fish? Just got back from a day on lake michigan and I caught 4 chinooks and one coho. All the chinooks were 20-25lbs and the coho was 12lbs. Other people with me caught lake trout to so know i have about 30lbs or so of fileted salmon and dont know what to do with it. I think that our boat caught almost 400 pounds today.

People here in NJ fish but they were just this week warned not to eat the fish. Of course those people who have been eating the fish before the warning probably can't function well enough to read about the new warnings that are based on a 1997 study, but there you go.

Sure
I mainly fish the rivers and lakes of southern and central New Hampshire. I do some serf casting in the ocean when the Striped Bass and Blues are running. My son likes to fish and we used to go alot more often before he became a “teenager”.

I flyfish PA. streams a lot, but right now they're running to low and warm for good fishing. It's typical for July and August in these parts. The limestone streams are still fishable, but there aren't any close to where I live.

400 pounds is a lot of fish. I hape you share. I like to backpack and fish where I keep ONE fish for breakfast or dinner. I have fished the Big Carp and Little Carp Rivers in the Porcupine Mountain State Park, Michigan, several creeks and lakes along the North Country Trail in Wisconsin, the Cross River along the Superior Hiking Trail in Minnesota to name a few.

I like fishing for trout in the Sierras. Goldens and rainbows are my favorite.

There have been some good trout recipe threads in the past. You can search for them if interested.

You bet I fish, even did the pro walleye circuit for 3 1/2 years! We salmon fish out of Winthrop Harbor, just north of Zion. Pulled a 34+ pound king over the gunnels about 4 years ago. Put filets in double tin foil with lemon slices, frozen vegies, dill, salt/pepper and butter. wrap tight and toss in 350 oven for about 20 min. and call me!! (because it's wrapped up, it doesn't matter if it's a grill or the oven)

Here in MD our official opening day is 27th I think but trout fishing is open all year except for the various closures. I caught some nice preseason stockers ,rainbows and browns saturday. Reg stock starts next week and after the opening day crowds thin out, which usually dont take long ,Ill head out in search of the wild ones.Start with Gunpowder prolly. Tight lines!

Caught 25 yesterday, mostly shellcracker. Ony 5 keepers though, and only two of those were really big. The biggest, I thought he was gonna be a crappie or something when I pulled him out. It was a good day.

Sounds like a productive fishing trip. The fishing around here is just about dead because we haven't had decent rainfall since the beginning of April. The creeks are very low and the fish spooked. This should be some of the best trout fishing of the entire year, instead it's the worst stream conditions I've ever seen in the month of May. It totally sucks and worse yet, there's still no significant rain in the forecast.

The funny weather has messed up the shellcracker and bluegill bedding periods. It got warm, and then we got a cold snap, which pushes them back into deeper water. But it's been warming up again for the last week or so, and I think they are moving into the shallows again. Bluegill bed might end up being okay though.

Funny thing I noticed yesterday. When I was holding the fish to pull the hook out of their mouth, they were warm to the touch instead of a little cool, like they have been. I guess the water is warming up finally.

That's a big shellcracker. It's bigger than the Alabama state record.

I think my big one from yesterday might be a pound or so.

They call 'em that because they eat mostly snails and stuff they have to crack the shell to get at. Also called the "redear sunfish" because they usually have, duh, red ears.

bp, do you use an ultralight setup to catch em? Seems like that would be a hoot.
I'm heading to Canada in 3 weeks to fish for Walleyes, Smallies, and Northern's.
I'm counting the days until we leave!

HALIBUT CHEEKS!!!!!
I just came from a weekend at the Pacific coast where the water can get real rough. Friday, everyone was drinking beers with smiles on their faces, because everyone caught 40-70 pound halibut and ling or is it link cod.

Saturday, not too good. One boat turned over with the guy stuck in the cabin. He had to make his way out to the top along with 2 other guys on the boat. The coast guard rescued them.

In a way, people should be prohibited from going out in rough waters, because the coast guard has to risk their lives to rescue these people.

Anyone here about halibut cheeks???? I was told they taste better than lobster and people cook them in butter.

cheeks of fish are a VERY good. Here in WI we will carve out cheeks from Bass and Walleye. As you described the meat has a sweet flavor. Cook them in butter with a splash of white wine. MMMMMMMM Good!

in colorado 2 weeks ago...
I did a one day guided fly fishing trip and caught some mighty cool Brown Trout (catch and release) in Clear Creek up above Boulder. Then did some casting in Fall River and caught some and also in the Big Thompson River.

I came home all pumped to try my hand in the 11 Points river, where I canoe all the time and caught 3 Rainbow Trout. All keepers and tasty good. I'm all pumped to fish all summer long whilst floating and not paddling down the river.

Out of the thousands of tagged trout the Fish Commission released this season, so far only two have been reported caught by fishermen. They were just plain tags and not the transmitter tags. Now the big question is where are all those tagged trout?
