BREAKING NEWS FLASH-DEL. WATER GAPView Messages“July 29-Delaware Water Gap-10:40a.m. An unsettled man, who introduced himself only as "Brian" to Ranger police was arrested Monday morning at a religious retreat off of the Appalachian Trail for trying to sabotage the water supply at the infamous Kirkridge shelter. Ranger police said the eccentric man didn't appear to be a hiker due to the fact that he wasn't wearing the traditional hiking garb other than two different colored socks and a pair of handsomely form fitting boxer briefs. Brian put up a tough but short lived fight with a small folding knife and potholder. However, his fight was short lived as the local ridgerunner, Gizmo, thwarted the attack and rendered Brian unconcious with a perfectly executed throw of an empty Yuengling Black and Tan beer bottle that hit the victim dead between the eyes. "Although I normally vehemently oppose litter on the AT, this beer bottle was a godsend" said Gizmo. It was later discovered, Gizmo was a 20 game winner for the eastern Tenn. Jaybirds sometime ago. As of yet, Brian has not disclosed where the hibachi, handheld videocamera, and walkie talkies he was carrying in a burlap sack at the time of the incident came from. Details to be posted at a later date.” 10:22:33 AM 7/29/02 “Brian sez he was libeled! Said he wouldn't be caught dead wearing your underwear or my socks!” 10:27:04 AM 7/29/02 “Guys, remember, leave no trace and take only pictures. Just because something has a bit of stank doesn't mean that you can "lose" it in the woods.” 3:25:58 PM 7/29/02 “this LyndyS chick is out of control, interesting how someone like this would even be allowed on MY trail. Now she wants a Hammock....What the hell, save the money and go to Jenny Craig or something....Excuse me for the derogitory comment LyndyS, however the motive is correct on my part, I would just invite the idea of some strong rope for that hammock baby. GearHeads such as this are normally driven to the idea that gear will "save" them....however in this case....save the gear missy.” 12:54:09 PM 7/31/02 “Very funny, Violin. Have a nice day.” 1:31:21 PM 7/31/02 “that doesn't sound like Violin! it does sound like a meany mean-head, though.” 1:32:24 PM 7/31/02 “He's just kicking himself for missing the trip.” 1:33:01 PM 7/31/02 “Don't blame me! I may be an ass but I'm no #&%!$!” 1:34:24 PM 7/31/02 “Sorry to point the finger at you, Violin.” 8:57:35 AM 8/01/02 “Brian, that was really cold. I am surprised and disappointed.” 9:01:04 AM 8/01/02 “I think I know who Brian is, and I just wonder whether he's man enough to come back and apologize or whether he just wants to go on being remembered as a jerk. It's not Goretex. That much I am certain of.” 9:16:12 AM 8/01/02 “I hope y'all don't think it was me! While I do have a lot of time on my hands at work (we're in a very slow period), a troll I ain't.” 9:18:10 AM 8/01/02 “No Artex, you'd just tackle somebody and make jerky out of them. You're clean!” 9:23:13 AM 8/01/02 “:-)” 9:24:54 AM 8/01/02 “Geobeet, check your hotmail.” 9:46:08 AM 8/01/02 “George, I have sent it again, as a reply to your email, but I sent the other one as a reply also... We shall see....” 9:55:15 AM 8/01/02 “I'm having all kinds of server problems today. It will probably arrive when you forget what you wanted to say. I've seen molasses run faster in January inside the Arctic Circle!” 10:30:11 AM 8/01/02 “George, I am getting your emails, so send me an alt. email address if you have one.” 10:34:22 AM 8/01/02 “Interesting” 2:16:58 PM 8/01/02 “I really don't think brian is goretex either.. goretex wouldn't have it in him to be that cruel. I'd bet whoever is posing as brian is some lonely, bitter a-hole who isn't a TT regular and is just looking to create havoc.” 2:22:06 PM 8/01/02 “I really appreciate that this ahole has put my homepage in his profile in an effort to frame me. I know what town LyndyS lives in. Do you, brian?” 2:30:28 PM 8/01/02 “what? that is about the lamest thing ever. i certainly hope Lyndy doesn't let this get to her. she's SO nice...i have no idea why someone would be so mean to her.” 2:39:27 PM 8/01/02 “"the lamest thing ever" = that he put Violin's homepage in his profile.” 2:40:31 PM 8/01/02 “It's making me angry as well. Whoever it is owes one big humble apology. And if that is not forthcoming and it turns out to be one of us, I would certainly have no respect for that person. Lyndy is kind, extremely generous, and accepting. I take what was written as a personal affront. The evening I spent as her guest was a wonderful evening, something I cherish. I agree with Artex that Goretex does not have this kind of thing in him. He also was a beneficiary of Lyndy's hospitality, and I have very strong faith that he was not the person who posted as Brian. It pains me also that this nitwit has driven a wedge into our midst and raised so much suspicion.” 2:50:35 PM 8/01/02 “I don't know why someone would attack her like that either. As someone who has struggled to keep my weight down most of my life, I know some words can be especially painful. Perhaps we should just let it go?” 3:00:51 PM 8/01/02 “Where were you guys when I was getting crufified a couple weeks ago?” 3:09:20 PM 8/01/02 “very good idea, Violin. i woulda had your back, Aero!” 3:11:07 PM 8/01/02 “Violin, If we knew it was just a troll, we'e be saying "don't feed the trolls." The problem in this case is that is looks so much like a particular person, and to let it go would be to forever wonder about the character and sincerity of that person. That would be a very sad conclusion, I think. Especially if that person is not the poster. Fritz” 3:12:41 PM 8/01/02 “this is just a keyboard warrior hiding behind a monitor. he is probably reveling in what he created(everyone suspicious of eachother)-exactly what he wants. let it go. lyndy is cool as hell. end of story.” 3:15:09 PM 8/01/02 “Fritz has a point. We met and went on a trip where everybody got along with everybody else. There was not a second of animosity. Whoever posted this has created doubts that should not have to exist. It's gotten beyond a mind game.” 3:16:09 PM 8/01/02 “Aero, your situation was different because everything was out in the open. You weren't being blindsided by some coward hiding behind a fake screen name, and there were plenty of people there, who knew you and the situation, to defend you. My instinct was to defend you, but I felt that the best thing I could do is stay quiet so as not to extend the life of that particular conflict.” 3:18:34 PM 8/01/02 “.' ... getting crufified ...' aero What? You were winning when Matt pulled the circuit breaker! Now I'll never tell you how it would habe ended if the lights had stayed on!” 3:23:17 PM 8/01/02 “Hey, I'm going to hire Nowslimmer as my personal trainer! But...um..do I have to do that egret pose?” 3:32:02 PM 8/01/02 “Wow. I hope no one thinks it was me- I may have been the newest TTer on the DWG trip, and my name can be misleading. Lyndys, even though I didn't get to talk to her much at all, seems like a totally cool person.” 3:51:54 PM 8/01/02 “Hey Corporal, Wolfman, and all the others, I think that you are cool too, and it is too bad that this has happened and caused all this suspicion. I guess someone doesn't want us to have too much fun. But I am going to ignore Brian and move on.” 3:56:50 PM 8/01/02 “Hammocks 2 of 2 messages posted in the past 3 days Hammocks "How strong do they have to be? Additionally, what size do you have to be to perhaps purchase one?" brian 02:15:35 PM 08/01/02 "check the manufacturers specs if ya wanna play it safe. Most are rated at 1/6 the static strength of the hammock for safety reasons/lawsuit prevention. I am 6'2 and found the hennessy ul-asym to be just fine. If yer really big he has a special model rated at 450 lbs and roomy for 7'er's" dirtyoldman” 4:07:38 PM 8/01/02 “I have no suspicions at all. I'd bet a paycheck it was not one of us on the trip. Everyone on that trip was just too nice, but there's always that one person trying to ruin the fun. Probably just someone jealous of us having a great time. Leaving that behind..... when's the next trip???” 4:25:48 PM 8/01/02 Training starts soon. “.'Hey, I'm going to hire Nowslimmer as my personal trainer! But...um..do I have to do that egret pose?' LyndyS No special uniform. No posing! Just get your bp-ing gear and join me in GSMNP in a couple of weeks. Then stick with me for the 10 weeks and you'll receive plenty of training. But I plan to lose at least 25 pounds, too. Can you exist on 700 calories per day?” 4:51:05 PM 8/01/02 “Well now, that would certainly do the trick, Nowslimmer. But I still have youngun's that I have to look after. I guess I will continue to be my own trainer for a while. The calorie count would be fine for normal activities but do you really eat that little while hiking all day, every day?” 5:40:29 PM 8/01/02 “It's hard to believe that someone would attack Lyndy like that. I've been going on backpacking trips with Lyndy for almost a year now and she's become one of my best friends. Definitely one of the best persons I've ever met. I agree, it's probably someone that's just jealous.” 5:50:47 PM 8/01/02 “.'but do you really eat that little while hiking all day, every day?' LyndyS That much, yes. Sometimes less. Before each hike I lay out the food and count the calories. Then I cut it back to 700 per day.and pack it. ( Sometimes, I will carry some emergency calories.) The menu may include oatmeal, grits, bread products, crackers, dry cereal, soups, rice, pasta, ramon noodles, cocoa, coffee, tea, raisins, crotons, tuna, other small cans of meats like chicken or processed meat products, 6 fresh tomatoes, apple sauce, peanut butter crackers, apple fruit bars, etc. No chocolate covered peanut butter cups, no mint patties, etc. I eat better food than at home and do not get hungry. But I do clean my bowl and eat every crumb. I know my goal and I know the program works. I take a multi-vitamin pill daily. I don't carry many ramon noodles any more. Most are 390 calories, which is more that one-half my daily allotment. The rice and pasta packages I can split in half easily and use as parts of two meals. My youngest daughter, a teenager, will be with me for a couple of weeks, after which I will take her to Iowa for her second year of college. Then my program will be real serious for more than two months. The stronger I can get my legs, the easier the AT will be for me in October. My longest hike included 19 nights. In Oct. I plan to do 27 nights with no resupply. It will be across GSMNP on the AT and return. With shelters at all but one stop, I will not carry a tent, just an 8' by 10' nylon tarp. And I intend to pick-up and haul out trail trash. Some of the trail I have hiked numerous times. The only new sections will be between the shelters where the trail crosses Thunderhead Mtn. and between Newfound Gap and Clingmans Dome. Mount Collins Shelter will be my only new overnight stop. aka nowslimmer” 7:07:28 PM 8/01/02 “Sounds great, Adakhiker! I did discover the Ramen Noodle Scam (the calories listed on the package is half of the package per serving).” 7:21:15 PM 8/01/02 “Haven’t checked in for a while, I can’t believe the Brian posts just somebody trying to cause trouble. I don’t believe it was anybody who was on the trip. Like Pennsy said when’s the next trip. I’ll be spending the rest of my August weekends painting the house. Need to get it done so my weekends in the fall can be spent hiking.” 8:37:01 PM 8/01/02 “Good plan, Must Hike. I can't wait for fall to arrive! It's the best time of the year, IMHO.” 8:42:16 PM 8/01/02 “Artex I agree fall is the best time of year, no bugs, and cool temperatures. Are going to Harriman this weekend?” 8:52:21 PM 8/01/02 “Fall hiking, I cant waite...expecially the color changes in the leaves around here. Thats one thing my brother really misses since he moved to NM (9 years ago)” 10:10:27 PM 8/01/02 “Looks like I'll be daytripping this Sunday, probably Buttermilk Falls/Hidden Falls circuit in N. Jersey. Let's plan a trip for sometime after Labor Day, another short overnighter. I'm thinking maybe Stokes State Forest. There are two AT shelters. I'll scout out the info if that sounds agreeable to everyone.” 7:27:42 AM 8/02/02 “Sounds good to me Geo.. Musthike - not sure if I'm hitting Harriman this weekend. My next five weekends are all booked for out of town trips (four of which are backpacking), so I may just be a lame-o and do a bunch of running this weekend.” 7:56:21 AM 8/02/02 “im taking my son on his very first backpacking trip this weekend. im taking him to do an easy loop we are going to Pine Swamp Mountian in Harriman. we are going to park by Lake Askoti and hike the Arden-Surebridge trail to Dunnining to Long Path. its a nice loop because there are about 6 iron mines to look for. so if you want to join us anyone one is welcome!!” 8:05:56 AM 8/02/02 “Geobeet, that sounds good I should be finished with painting by then and will need to do some hiking. Artex, you’ll be spending August weekends backpacking and I’ll have a paintbrush in my hands, but I must finish before fall my favorite time of year for hiking. Wildflower, I was in that same area two weeks ago backpacking. I hit the Arden-Surebridge, Dunning, Long Path, Ramapo-Duderberg and the AT. Bring plenty of water it was very dry no water in the streams. The only place I could filter some water was at Island Pond, which was at the end of the first day, which was ok because it made for a very nice swim after a hot and humid day of hiking.” 8:29:09 AM 8/02/02
