When was it?
Thought it'd be fun if everyone could think back and search for their very first post on TT. This is the earliest of mine I could find, on a thread I started asking for stoves. My two year anniversary is just days away!!!!

"I'm in the market for my own stove and was wondering what you guys thought the best one was for between $50-$70. I've seen several that look good, but would like to hear your suggestions. What do you think?"

Here's mine from 1/22/01

I'm a newbie from Pell City, AL which is about 30 min. east of Birmingham. I'm just getting into hiking and have a bpacking trip planned this spring. Thus far I've been doing day hikes to get my feet wet, which leads to my question. I'm considering a day hike from Amicalola falls to Springer Mountain and back in a single day. Is this doable or am I dillusional. I've been reading this group for about 4 months, so I guess that I should know better than to ask this bunch a ? about my own sanity (grin). Thanks."

I never did that hike. I still want to try it though

newgirl did a thread about this, i think...i forget what it was called.

my first post was,
"then Tarp Rat is a chunky monkey!"
(in response to someone's comment that you are what you eat on the DICK MUNCHING CRACK BABIES thread)

i can't get over how hilarious that is!!!

Most of us need access to a list of our posts by date. Then, too, we may not remember who we were. I've noticed some name changes, but I've only seen next to nothing. (Where else can one get a new life?)

I think Newgirl's post was on trail talk birthday's, which is similiar, but thought it'd be cool to read exactly what people posted. Thought it'd be an interesting sociological experiment to see how people broke the ice on their first posts.

My first post, I asked about buying a tent for my family of four, for car camping, no less. Most people were pretty nice, and were only vaguely insulting rather than blatently so (j/k). It was great to ask a lot of questions and get so many different viewpoints, I was hooked.

I came here shortly after the turn of the century! I did alittle searchin and I might have found it but its hard to say. I never really introduced myself, I just kinda started posting opinions. One thread I would like to find again but it has probably gone to the waste bin was the Creationism thread I think we had going sometime that spring of '00! Now that was fun!!

I do remember posting to one called ' Famous last words' and I think I said something along the lines of ' Dam Indians' by Gen. Custer

Goodman Radagast,
There is now a fine road from Atlanta to Rome, some of which is paved, but that is mostly cordoroy. Therefore, I would recommend that you motor to Rome. In Rome, you can purchase a horse and mule from the livery. A single mule, adequately laden, should be sufficent for carrying the supplies neccessary for an enjoyable visit into the Cohutta Mountains.

If you require further information, please dispatch a letter of inquiry to me at:

and Sequioa/Kings National Parks... pretty much all right here in my backyard. I have been backpacking since I was 17 and I'm on the other side of 40 these days ;)
I am planning to do most of the John Muir Trail ( Tuolumne to Whitney Portal ) in mid July. Already have a reserved permit...

After lurking a few days,
I posted this on a thread titled "My wife thinks I'm weird"

Long time ago a friend stood me up for a weekend hike, so I went alone. My wife at the time did pretty much the same thing. Upshot: about 30 years later I finally had to admit my tent was shot after 16 years of faithful service, longer than both of my marriages put together. And the tent before that lasted 14 years, the same length as both marriages.
Women come and go, but a good tent, ... that's something special.
No message here. Just a reflection."

I kinda slid in through the side door about 11 months ago. There were troll and newbie heads on pikes all around, so I kept a low profile the first couple of weeks --- just tossing in a quip or two here and there.

I read the Jellow Thread start to finish, then I saw a few posts by FlyGuy and Rad discussing the finer points of Frank Zappa's lyrics and I Knew I was in the right place.

Thanks BackPacker.com.....
I found this site thru BackPacker.com....someone suggested the readers go over and check them out.

I forgot when...2 years ago around Sept. I think. Jumped right into the debates and arguments (about 10 minutes I found this site) without lurking around....forgot what the subject was though.

Stretching

"I have heard and read that you shouldn't stretch "cold" muscles. It is more important to stretch AFTER exhertion, the benefit of which is apparent the following day.

When I run (OK, "jog") I always walk first, maybe jog just for a few minutes, then stop for several minutes of stretching before going on with my workout. Afterwords, I do all the same stretches again. But I don't stretch before I get the blood pumping through those muscles.

And, I've never stretched before hiking. Do most of you stretch before hiking?"

I remember the thread that Briar Rabbit referred to about Evolution/Creation.We got a little heated! But later reconciled at the Red River Gorge ECT LOL!

Go to the search field on the righthand side of the page (the TT page, not a thread page) and plug in your moniker of choice. It'll pull up every reference to it that still exists in the archive.

I think I found mine on July 27 last year. At least I think it was my first post. It's the earliest one I found anyway.

Xcursion Lantern
"Has anyone tried one of these lanterns? www.coleman.com/coleman/ColemanCom/prod_Detail.asp?Product_id=9970-725&CategoryID=24757&SourcePage=PROD_CATEGORY_MAIN.ASP&SubmittingPage=Prod_subcategory.asp
They look pretty good. Great weight savings over other lanterns (12 oz.)and a lot brighter than a candle lantern.
No stores in my area carry them but I'm thinking of one, especially for those winter trips when it gets dark around 4:30. I wonder how they work at sub-zero temps."

RE: Ultra-lightweight Backpacking????
"My understanding of UL backbacking is looking for multiple uses for each item you take along. Perhaps the REI "bucket" could double as a hat or even a privy if you put a leg in each handle. Now, that would be worth $12.00. Perhaps too, it can be used to ice-up the beer."

I try and I try with Fritz...

Yeah - that's always an interesting question - when is one no longer a newbie? There must be some intermediate levels between newbie and oldtimer? I figure if you've been on a TT hike that goes a long way toward moving you from "newbie" to perhaps "tenderfoot" or "webelo".

Newbie may be a matter of perception - which would imply that you really must rely on others to declare you free of the newbie status.

And since I have to opportunity - I will be the first to say - who cares how long you've been posting - Just hike!

Fritz is always so concerned about status and labels. Yuppie yankee!
