Hiking partner in Sept.
I'm looking for a hiking partner for an overnight trip in western Montana around September 21-23. I'm traveling from Indiana to Missoula the week prior. I wanted to get some hiking in, but don't want to venture into unknown territory alone.

I'm 27, an avid outdoorsman and a freelance outdoor adventure writer in southern Indiana. Contact me at farlessj@yahoo.com

Is CMB in Indiana and NG near Missoula?

Nah, not likely.

No, lyndy. I think CMB would take the more direct approach.

IJ (presuming he is not a troll), should be able to get some good information from aero.

Sept. 21 in Missoula- be prepared for the first fall snowstorm- could be really nice too. Try the Rattlesnake Wilderness north of Missoula. The trailhead is about 5-6 miles north of the University. That was one of my first backpacking trips. Nice views up on top of several ranges and a small chain of lakes. Stop in at "The Trailhead" outdoor shop in downtown Missoula and they'll get you pointed in the right direction.

...or, if you're a troll, stop in Butte and take a flying leap into the Berkley Pit.

Thanks for the tips Aero. As for Crazy Mike, maybe he'd like to accompany me since he's from Indiana -- that is if he doesn't mind traveling with trolls.

well i'll be. $110 million for cleanup are some super funds, alright. doesn't sound like a nice place to go swimming...

IJ-- Here's a great trip: Stop in Butte at Pork Chop Johns; order a big, pork chop sandwich with the works; take it up to the Pit visitors overlook; Eat; drive on to Missoula.

Take comfort in the fact that the Garden State boasts a couple towns with extremely embarrassing names, Buttzville, and Dicktown.

Sorry Indiana!
I'm Newgirl (the NG they were refering to) and I can offer you even less help then Aero did. I live in eastern MT and don't know much about hiking around Missoula. I could suggest that you go check out Lolo Pass (cedar forests and stuff). It's very pretty in there and there are tons of trailheads.

Oh, and the other thing . . .
I used to live in Butte. Definitely stop at Pork Chop John's and have a sandwich. Damn fine piece of pork. If you aren't up for pork, go to the M&M Bar uptown (if you visit the Pit, it won't be too far to go), they have an old-fashioned lunch counter. You can eat the cheapest and best tasting ground round hamburger in the U.S.
