Sleeping Arrangements
What does everyone think about tent sharing with a member of the opposite sex who is not your partner?

Why should it be a problem?

Depends on how your partner views those things more than anything, is my guess.

In an emergency, I'd let a woman share my tent. If I planned a trip with a woman, and we planned on sharing the tent, I'd discuss it with my wife. If she was okay with it, then no problem.

I got no problems, especially if she's hot!!

If there's an uncomfortable air surrounding the situation though, head-to-toe is a possibility.

This question identifies the reason my wife would rather I go solo. It is either that or my life insurance. ;-)

Pretty much just comes down to trust.

I am a very trusting person but I just wonder if this isn't too much of a temptation for both people involved. Sleeping next to someone is a very intimate experience, am I being old fashioned?

Imagine if the woman had hypothermia and you both had to get in the sack naked together!

That would be very interesting.

Ummm. I can think of some ways you could show your gratitude for saving your life...

Nah. Never happen.

hi babe, nice meeting you. I've seen a lot and I can see that you are developing hypothermia. We better get in the sack naked together until it is cured.

Been married 13 years. I know me to well. To much temptation. So I would'nt think it would be a good idea for me to put myself in that perdicament.

If married: Out of respect for my wife I probably wouldn't share a tent with a female unless it was an emergency. She trusts me (I think), but it is a sign of respect to avoid awkward situations.

I know I wouldn't want her to share a tent with a guy unless it was an emergency, so I guess it figures.

If both individuals were single and uncommitted, then it would just be up to their best judgement.

This reminds me of the episode of Taxi where Latka gets stuck in his taxi with a woman during a blizzard and ends up having sex with her to share body heat. Anyone see that one?

No worries with me. I only backpack when it's cold. Therefore I will be in MY sleepy bag. Only room for me. I don't think two people could fit in a bivy sack either.

It's funny, no females have responded to this questiom. I like the respect idea. I was just curious as a friend who is married recently spent many nights with a much younger female and NO his wife didn't know...what was he thinking and what was the younger female thinking?

The female perspective:

Why not? If you're married, you either trust your spouse or you don't and only you two know what you'd both be confortable with.

If you're single, and not serious with anyone, que sera, sera.

I must admit, as much as I love group trips for all the different personalities you come across, I sure like being alone in my tent and just having "my time" to unwind at the end of the day or to "get going" in the morning.

Just my two cents, IMHO.

I won't share my hammock with anyone - too f'ing uncomfortable IMO (not that I have ever tried) plus sex is just another f'ing addiction that I am better off without.

Let's see, I haven't had a bath in five days and neither has she? I'd venture that she wouldn't want me in her tent anymore than I would want her in mine.

But then again, if she had ice cold beer and could cook and wash dishes afterwards......well maybe I'd let her stay.

Tx - I completely agree - although I think alot of men act like pigs because they think it's an attractive trait of manhood but in reality they can be sweethearts.......
nicegirl
8:36:24 PM
7/30/02

So we're pigs because you expect us to be?

Actually, I've noticed that men can be quite delusional, thinking that they're attractive to much younger women. I'm a lot happier because I decided a long time ago not to worry about that and work on being a good husband to my wife instead.

That said, I'm still a pig....lol....
bitpusher

7/30/02

ok...my perspective
since this very thing recently happened to me, I think that I can offer an insight.

It was the darned most uncomfortable night that I had ever attempted sleep. I had to sleep on my hands just to make sure that they wouldn't wander whilst I was asleep. Also, she smelled so darned good. I had disturbing dreams all night cause she was right next to me and I couldn't/wouldn't make a move.

R E S P E C T

thats what it comes down to. IMO...it is the woman's place to make the move. It is too easy for a man to overpower a woman (in most cases, but not all). So...I think that the man (who is usually a pig) needs to stay in place until the woman opens the door or initiates the next move.

With that said...nicegirl...wanna share a tent and sleepy bag...I'm feeling hypothermic?

in stikmon's case
the girl can usually overpower him.
i don't think it would be much of a problem. for me, personally, i usually stink so bad, as the woman probably would that i don't get real interested. although, if you take a swim right before bed or something we could be talking a different story.
that sort of thing used to be awkward(?) for me but since graduating from high school and having friends go off to school i've spent a lot of nights in bed with women who were friends with nothing happening. well, most of the time nothing happened.
now that i think about it, i don't know, judgement call.
if you're married you've committed your life to someone and it's a lot easier to resist the temptation, though it's gonna always be there.

HOI - I have a hammock too - aren't they the greatest? I've never tried to have two persons in mine but I guess it's possible. I also use a bivy, tarp or tent depending on the trip..so many options

Josh...
your so full of it. Any woman who would get close to you would more than likely have 4 feet and a tail. As for the stink...I can attest to that. From across the campsite...I could still smell the stench...even my mother said something to me on the way home...

If you're comfortable sharing a tent with someone of the opposite sex there's nothing wrong with it. It will save you both some weight.

Personally, I like having my own tent. I've lived alone so long now that I'm just used to having my own space.

This all reminds me of the first time I went backpacking with my future wife. We were all just friends at the time, living in the dorms at UNM. Three guys and two gals went backpacking at Latir Lakes in northern New Mexico. Typical of the place in the summer, we got some terrific thunderstorms. During one, the men went to my tent, the women to the "womens" tent. One of the guys was desparate for some womanly company, and they new it. Being the evil things they are, the women started calling out in seductive voices "Ven agui, ven aqui!" Come here, come here! He took it hook line and sinker. "Lets go, the want us. Come on." I knew the women much better than that. He would have gone out in the rain, gotten soaked and they wouldn't have let him it.
