While flipping through the channels tonite I decided to check out the Canadian Commonwealth games. I got to see some world class mtn biking yesterday so I figured what the heck...

Tonites highlight...powerwalking. It was absolutely hilarious skinny marathon running looking guys wearing sleek sunglasses, mesh tank tops and nylon running shorts powerwalking like there was no tomorrow. The walk can only be describe as some sort of very labored hobbling, hip swishing sorta thing. Kinda like a really drunk hooker on amphetamines. You gotta love it!

Learn some geography, the Commonwealth games are not "Canadian". The Commonwealth encompasses all the former countries of the British Empire. Besides which, the games are being held in Manchester, England this year.

Gear slut, as the games are shown on my local CBC station I made the presumption (much to your evident offense and dismay) that they were Canadian. I apologize for offending you and your fascination with the heritage, location and present power walking champs with my ill informed post. Lightening up, you dont have to try to be bacpac junior all the time.

Funny you should mention it, but I was just bumbling around Canada today - Sault Ste. Marie.

Observations:

A sports bar wanted a bit of American flair, so it decorated with some baseball bats with the word "Louiseville Slugger" on them. Is that French?

I was reading the sports page and a reporter wrote about ESPN's Sportscenter. Only he used the British "Sportscentre." Bastardizing American culture is not neighbourly.

I walked into the Roots store at the mall - incidentally, Roots was started by a Detroiter (i.e. an American) and I was looking at some of those nifty Canadian Olympic hats. Y'all, maybe I can pass for a Canuck the next time I'm in Europe.

What the hell is a poutine?

I walk into the bookstore and find that half the books in the "Canada" section have American flags on the front and try to figure out what a Canadian is, mostly by trashing those morons below the 45th? Maybe "Canadian" is a synonym for "poutine"?

I'm crossing back over the border and see the sign "Bienvenue aux Etats Unis" with a whole bunch of guys in fatigues searching every tenth car. Oh my God. The French invasion has begun.

Oh, BTW, Canadian women? mmmm. mmmm.

Dream trip: Drive to Cochran. It took about 5.5 hours to get to the Soo from S. Michigan. It'd be about 3 or 4 hours more drive time to the departure point for the Ontario Northern train to Polar Bear PP. Bring a pack and follow the coast of James Bay. You could do it in five or six days. Anyone up for a bit of Arctic packing?

I don't know if they could generate any advertisting revenue from "power walking" competitions. I mean, who's going to watch some people walk really fast for 10 kilometers. No doubt it's a hard sport...but it's pretty boring.
