Making the jump to a hydration system...tired of refilling my 1 liter platypus over and over.

Decided on the CamelBak® 70oz. Unbottle....any body have one???

Unbottle Article at BP

I also picked up a Outdoor Research Sonora Sombrero, a replacement cartridge for my Pur Hiker and some other odds and ends!

I haven't bought any new gear in months...can't wait!!! Come on Campmor!

i don't like it
1. hose is too short
2. started leaking on 2nd use

I thought the hose looked short in the picture. If it leaks ...I'm sending it back!!!!!

I chose Camelbak beacuase of their reputation for NOT leaking!
That sucks ....Did you send/take it back?

Camelback
Don't like the camelback or similar hydration systems. It runs out of liquid unexpectedly (carry spare emerg bottle) & the hose used to freeze in winter until I got the insulated tube cover.

Besides, they're a pain to clean even with the large & tube brushes. I'm going back to soda-type bottles with push-pull caps.

iodine stained the hell out of mine and started leaking on the 3rd trip...don't feel i can take it back due to the iodine stain.
anyone think i can take it back?

Why Iodine?
Seems like a plain 'ol water filter works fine. I don't like to ingest iodine. Maybe traveling in a 3rd world country.

opie
dude, for the money those things cost, send it back. iodine stains are what happens to those things.
i prefer my platypus. easy, nice long tube, inexpensive(relatively) and never had a drop leak out.(knock on wood) prowler had a wet sleepin bag once on a AT hike but it was cause he didn't put the cap on right.

windwalker, good luck with the camelbak, but you could always pick up the bigger platy bag for a couple bucks.

Y'all just keep makin' my case for the plain ol' Nalgene bottle. No runs, no drips, no errors.

I have the 100 oz. Unbottle. Just got it, and only used it once, but I was very happy with it. It's very convienient to gulp down water while you're hiking and not have to stop.

I think Pekka's got an un-bottle.

I've got an older camelbak, and have never had a problem with it. I love the thing, take it hiking, walking, rollerblading, whatever.

catshiker..i like iodine..helps me molt and gives me a nice pink color...err nm that's my pet shrimp

mine became overtightened and the plastic threads gaped up when i trying to open it....your right..it's going back..

i love hydration systems...i have miss opie platy-bladder with the camel bitevalve...in the camel neoprene pouch

yeah, the camelbak bite valves are MUCH better than the platy valve, IMO.

Um short hoses can often be fixed with a trip to the hardware store. They usually carry tubing of the correct size, Just take yer old hose with you.

I have been thinking about the 100 oz one myself... 70 tends to go a bit quick on hot days.

still cant understand why anyone would rely on iodine... perhaps they need a trip out to the BLACK moshannon... the water has a lot of sap in it amongst other things.. very nasty tasting/smelling stuff. Must be nice to have such clean water sources. :P

dirtyoldman...i grew up waaaaay out in the sticks...only water came from a shallow well and from a 100 year old pump. No filtration...no treatment...so i consider treating with iodine sufficient. With all the reports i've read iodine serves its purpose...the only reason i'd get a filter is to pump from puddles and streams that were hard to scoop from

If you're worried about turbidity, you can always run the water through a bandana.

Just make sure it's a clean one, or you might end up with Eau de OPIE

yahoo...sorry opie but I just spent two days filtering molasses. I used the cleanest I could find :P

I have in fact done the well routine and frankly It was way better then most city water. (by both taste and water Quality testing).

msr dromedary
distancedude....
i recently purchased the 4 liter msr and my wife got the 2 liter model....we love them....no problems at all....it was sorta awkward for us to filter water directly into the bag (pur hiker), so we filtered our water into a nalgene bottle, then emptied that into the bag.....

i have used platypus for a few years, now. i got the little attachment for my pur hiker. refills are faster than they ever were, before.

Cool Gonzo. We plan on some trips where we'll be campin on top of the ridgeline away from water supply and figured this would do the trick. Looks like it has loops to where you can attatch it to the backpack. 6 litres would be alot of weight, but might be worth it.

I had 2 70 oz. Camelbak bladders and they both split at the lower seam after one summers use. The MSR Hydromedary bag I have has seen much more use and abuse and is holding up much better. I won't buy another Camelbak since they didn't last long enough for me.

I've had two camelbaks for 4 or 5 years, a 70oz. and a 100oz. I bought them both with the napsack carriers. No leaking - I've had them all apart and changed the bite valves to the big gulp ones. Like smileygirl, I don't do anything without them.

I was wearin' the 70oz in it's pack when I did an endo - saved me some painful back roadburn. I use the 100oz bladder alone when hiking or backpacking. They also work great for hosing things off or a makeshift shower.

PS...
I use them in the winter as well...they've been partially frozen and are still fine. My grandkids love them and drag them around by the hose.

My son stole my camelback. I never had a problem with it, used it for a couple of years.

I have a MSR dromedary that has only needed a replacement of the flip valve once in several years.

I havn't had a problem with the hose freezeing in the winter. If you take a small drink every few minutes, its fine. Just keep something flowing through it, doesn't need to be a lot.
