Just curious, who here takes classes or follows along with VHS/DVD's?

Do you like it? Tried it and it's a waste of time?

I got a book at Borders. It is color photos in a spiral bound, free standing flip chart format.

It is called something like "beginning Yoga"

I really like it. I bought it to lend some discipline to my stretching routine. It has definetly helped.

I've been doin yoga for years. I scrapped the weights awhile ago. I can give you a lot of info. the best type for strength, flexibility, and balance is called astanga yoga or power yoga. Rodney Yee and Bryan Kest put out some really good tapes. i recommend rodney's yoga for strength and yoga for flexibility series. i'll talk to you tommorrow. gotta catch the train.

I'll be starting yoga after the baby's born. I'm too far along to start, or so I've been told. I've been thinking of taking yoga for years.

I took some starter yoga classes earlier this year. It's wonderful, I find myself incorporating it into all aspects of may life.

I haven't tried any video tapes. I prefer a real instructor. My instructor knew more about my body and its needs than I did within a couple weeks.

Treebait, in Billings (you know, MT's big city, hehehe) they have a yoga center that offers classes for mom's w/ brand new babies. The babies are invited.

Yep, they have those here in my part of FL. too. Just a few miles down the road. Problem is everyone and their sister is having a baby here, and I seem to be on the tail end of the rush. I'll probably call around to see if I can reserve a place.

One of my favorite figure drawing models did yoga. Those were some of the best poses to draw. I'd love to draw someone doing "4 monkeys" again. I think that was the name of the pose.

Yes, I said monkey, and the pose I was thinking of came from tai chi, not yoga.

Yoga is the own thing that I ever quit in my life (this is 100% true). I thought it might bring balance to my other athletic endeavors but unfortunately I ended up with a drill sargeant maniac for an instructor. She supposedly is one of the top 8 instructors in the U.S. (certification wise) but she totally turned me off. I was stressed going to class so I quit after 6 months. With the right instructor, I think I would of stuck it out. It wasn't the difficulty of the workout but her attitude that was hard to take.

itzawayoflife....
true yoga is not ALL about becoming a pretzel....
when choosing a teacher, try to steer clear of the "new-age" doobies and find one who teaches the ancient traditional forms. If you have to go video , of the newbies , Rodney Yee teaches the closest to all aspects of yoga....it is as much a way of being as it is learning asanas
sentimental message~~~~~~ right running girl?

this is just my humble opinion of course....

I'm sure tai chi is awesome but it's not going to build strength anywhere near the way yoga will. i lifted weights for years but never could do a handstand pushup. After about 2 months of astanga(power) yoga I was doing them. The only thing I could compare it to is gymnastics-using your own bodyweight to build strength and flexibilty.

oh, gross! men in LYCRA just do not do much for me, LOL!

that reminds me, my friend Anna used to work in a dance clothing store, and this one dude came in to try on some spandex pants, and kept coming out of the dressing room to ask her how he looked in them...NO UNDERWEAR, either! she said she had to try to keep a straight face and not laugh hysterically...

rodney has kind of become commercialized with all of these celebrities who have taken a liking to him(Donna Karan, Oprah). Sort of like Richard Gere with the Dali Lama. But Rodney's the real deal. Check out the intro to his yoga for strength video. the guy is sick.

I've taken Yoga a few times. A lot depends on the instructor. I had a great instructor while I was living in NH. The problem with books and tapes is that it is easy to do things that can mess you up (for example doing some poses with a rounded back).

It can be great for your state of mind, your flexibility and is great for certain kinds of strength that you don't usually develop in most work outs (for example, some of the balancing poses are great for strengthening your ankles).

My girl friend and I have been taking ashtanga (sp?) Yoga (aka Power Yoga) this summer, and its been OK, but I don't think I'll take it again.

BTW (GS): Tantra is a yoga.

Total Buttkicker
I just took my first Bikram yoga class. It's 26 postures, and the room is heated to 105-110 degrees (on purpose).

I've never sweated so much in my life. It was hard, but I really enjoyed it. I'll be back for more.

I just spent the weekend with my 17 y/o son doing a Yoga retreat (at the Kripalu center in Lenox MA) - he'd been asking for ages and they won't let anyone under 18 do it without an adult.
Good fun mostly. Some good craziness and some very good yoga insturctors.

Yoga translates as "union". It's from the same root word as "yoke". There are many levels to yoga.
I am at a level too low to even consider yoga. Congratulations Artex.
