I sent you an e-mail in reply to the one where you gave me your non-spam address, but I've been having probs with my mail- Did you get it? I wuz wondering if you were going on one of your day hikes like next weekend. Oh yeah, and what kind of filter was that you were using on the trip?

That's a negatory, ghostrider, didn't recieve your e-mail. :-( You can still use my yahoo one, I'll keep an eye out for it.

The water filter I have is a Pur Hiker. I love it.

As for this upcoming weekend, I haven't any solid plans. I was tooling around with the idea of brushing up on my map and compass skills and bushwhacking in Harriman for a dayhike. If you want to go, lemme know.

bean and rice recipe
Hey Artex - yeah, I know you told me once before, but what is your recipe for black beans and rice?

Actually, I use red beans, not black, just a personal preferance..

Here's how I make it. It's easy like Sunday morning.

1. Boil a bag of instant brown rice (Success Rice is a good brand). Of course, you could use white rice, but I like brown rice better.

2. Heat up a can of Kirby red beans w/ sauce. Kirby beans come in an awesome sauce. If your grocer doesn't carry Kirby, Goya is a decent second choice.

3. Add about a dozen good shakes of tabasco, a couple of teaspoons of minced onions, and a dash of garlic powder.

4. Optional: Mix in a can of Hormel white chicken. This is good for an added protein kick, which is a good idea for butt kicking hikes. The chicken chunks are already pretty small, but break up the bigger ones with a fork so they'll deyhdrate better.

5. Mix the rice and the beans together in a big ass bowl. Eat some now, and dehydrate the rest for upcoming trips!

6. Fart with hurricane-like intensity.

The recipe on the Goya Black Bean can is kick ass. Mix in chopped green chilies for some kick.

If he farts with hurricane-like intensity, doesn't sound like he needs any more kick.

That does sound like a good arse-kicker though.

I got all the ingredients. I'm tempting to make a batch after work and "test" the results tonight around the NYC gang. ;o)

Hey - about how long do you dry yours?

Takes about 12-15 hours in my dehydrator. If you do gas up before you head out tonight, here's a strategy you can use to help you pick up chicks:

If you see a hot chick but she's talking to some guy, stand next to the guy and let one out SBD. Then, suddenly, look at the guy in disgust. She'll wonder what your problem is until the smell hits her, and then she'll slap the guy she was talking to and walk off. Walk up to her and say "that guy was one rank sunuva #&%!$!" and then ask if you can buy her a drink. Pretty good plan, huh?

If that doesn't work, you can always follow the guy into the bathroom, then light one and cremate him with it. Wait 15 or 20 minutes, then go over to the girl and say you saw her boyfriend crawling out the window...

or, you cold just tell her to pull your finger. She might think its a neat trick......hey, it could happen.

Haha! I'll have to try that with Corporal Nasty tonight. I know he'll be with a 'hot chick.'

Hooo doggy! That's the first I ever cooked anything with tobasco. A bit spicy but damn good. I used chicken as well because there didn't seem to be a whole lot of this stuff. After I filled one tray for drying, there was only a little bit left.

Ah ha, well, better late than never! I had only assumed that you had added Tabasco to your homemade chili before, I thought it was a prerequisite for any chili. :-)
