Listening to some of the conservative thinkers on this site makes me think that Rush Limbaugh should declare his candidacy.
Oh, I forgot, then he might actually have to debate someone.
Never mind.

he'd never run
but he'd debate anybody on the planet. they are scared to have him on network shows. don't make the mistake of thinking he is stupid. he's actually a very astute political commentator, and prognosticator.

Strat, my bro! I don't think he is unintelligent. I think the format of his show is geared only toward his pompous ranting. Have you ever heard him debate anyone besides low IQ winos on his show? Since he likes to degrade Daschle so frequently, I would love to see a televised debate between the two.

Rush's "fact" finders would resign immediately upon learning that there was a serious debate looming.

I saw a tape where Limbaugh appeared without the audience being pre-screened and the Average Joes that walked up to the mic had him for a snack.

Don't even think of suggesting an actual debate; it would destoy your sandcastle.

I'm not thrilled with McCain's position or his rhetorical flourish at the end of that article (thanks Viol man for posting the link), but there is that refreshing air of honesty and consistency in what he says.

If McCain were president, I might agree with him less than I agreed with Clinton - but I would respect him more than I have respected any president in quite a while.

I'm not on the McCain bandwagon. That said, the real race in 2000 would have been Bradley - McCain.

I had hopes for Bradley at the begining, but the more I watched him the lamer he seemed. By primary day, I just didn't see much difference between him and Gore. (the gap between McCain and Bush seemed pretty huge... they looked like Bentsen and Quayle when put side by side - the only thing that made Bush look good was Forbes - who came off as the most cynical jerk in the whole flock of candidates that started out that year)

Yes, Bradley didn't stand his ground. Tragic. Had he stuck to his guns, the US might have had a chance to witness a real debate between conservative progressives and liberal progressives.

like pedy said, ,he looked ok for a minute, but his true colors came through in the end. bush was actually one of the more moderate candidates in my view. i dun want no extreme right winger any more than ya'll did(bucannon).

That guy and David Duke ought to form a new party and run on that ticket. Then if they win any states, we know where to send the national guard.

When McCain first ran in Arizona we thought him a carpetbagger. Then he got messed up in that iforgethisname thing with the savings and loan. That really seemed to shake him--he had not thought of himself as being a greedy grabby guy just like everyone else. Anyway, he changed after that and became a much more thoughtful person.

Yes, MP. I think the Charles Keating episode woke him up in a major way. I remember him saying to his fellow Senators, "Look out folks, it could happen to you tomorrow."

There was a report I saw just the other day (sorry, no references, <grin>)... and according to those particular numbers, Bush had raised as much cash in 50 events as Clinton did in 200.

I wondered if they allowed for inflation?

President George Bush vowed at the morning Pentagon commemoration(9-11-02),
"What happened to our nation on a September day set in motion
the first great struggle of a new century. The enemies who
struck us are determined and they are resourceful. They will
not be stopped by a sense of decency or a hint of conscience --
but they will be stopped."

Hmmm so what we need is a leader without either???

More to the point, these people (terrorists, including suicide bombers) are driven by a sense of decency and by conscience - but rather perverted ones. They sacrifice everything for their principles - the problem is not lack of principle, but the horrible nature of their principles. If these were merely people without decency or conscience they could be bought or bullied.

Fanatics are more dangerous than simple ammoral thugs. Sadam Hussein may be an immoral thug without decency or conscience, but Osama Bin Laden was/is more dangerous than that.

What is scarier than an enemy you know??

An enemy that shakes your hand and smiles at you...

the Wahabi Islamic movement being spread to the world through Saudi Arabia (with the assistance of U.S. dollars) is what allowed 9/11 to happen. Saddam is a threat, but Bush is treating Saudi as a pure ally when there is ugly stuff under the surface. I think this is going on because there is such a nice business partnership between the Saudi Royal family and U.S. Oil companies

You do realize that Saddam rode a CIA train into Baghdad don’t you? We backed the Ba’ath coup in Iraq and supplied a list of communists and leftists to be eliminated as part of the coup. This was back in the good old days of the Cold War and the previous Iraqi government had the audacity to withdraw from the US led anti-Soviet Baghdad Pact and *gasp* nationalize some oil concessions. Like much of the present day mess in the Middle East, it helps to realize that we are now stuck cleaning up ‘unintended consequences’ of the Cold War. I wonder what messes we’re creating by today’s actions for our children. Seems to me that policies that impact future generations require at least a little forethought.

Anyhoo...

I don't wanna get into consumption of natural resources debate on this upstanding political thread but the freedom to drive a post-2000 domestic vehicle that gets 15 MPG or less should be banned.

And in all fairness, ION, 9-11 did have an impact on the U.S. economy that was beyond Gerogieporgie's control.

If you watched Greenspan addressing Congress on Tilt's beloved C-SPAN, you'd know that

a) the stock market crash and the resulting drop in capital gains taxes caused much of the change in the budget picture (Mr. 'irrational exuberance' didn't see it coming though).

b) he's hardly above partisan politics.

I just think it's funny to hear people complain about the cost of gas after they CHOOSE to buy a gas guzzler. It's akin to suing McDonald's after getting fat from eating there everyday...
