The Smartest Dog

“Well, ta other day I stopped by Big Foots place just as he was finishin up cleanin’ the drops down the barn. Turns out Walkindude, Skiracer and Hobbit was already there for a visit bein’ it was too blame hot to be messin’ round with any field work. Bein’ the ever happy host, ol’ Big Foot told us to go take a rest in under the maple tree in the side yard while he went on to fetch some refreshments. Didn’t seem long he’d gathered the fixins for some juleps which included a jug of his “homedmade”. Bein thoughtful as he is, he even had a grape flavored soda pop for walkindude. I was toppin of my refreshment with a couple sprigs of fresh mint when his hound come sniffin round. “Well now,” says Ski, “this hound reminds of the time I was down to the Buffalo River with a bunch from that TT group”. “Stikmon and Buddur was sittin in camp telling how smart each of their dogs was and how much smarter one was than ta other.” “Well, Lizs piped in and says we’d just have to have a competition to see which was the smartest trail dog after all. Khatru, Stikmon's dog, was the first to go.” “He went through all the normal tricks and then for the grand finale ol’ Stikmon laid it on. He said to em’ “Khatru, what do ya do iffin’ we is on the Buffalo River Trail and ye hear the Ranger comin’?” Ol’ Khatru slinked off to the bushes and laid down under one where you couldn’t even see em. Then finally Stikmon said “Khatru, go show em how ya dump in the woods.” That dog went over near the creek, startin pacin off till he was a hunnerd yards away, dug a hole, did his business, and covered the hole up where you could barely tell where he’d been. Well, not to be outdone Buddur went on an had his dog buddur do all the normals then said, “buddur, what do you do when you see Bacpac comin down the trail with his walkin stick?” All the hair started stickin straight up on buddur’s back and he bared his teeth and started growlin’ like you never heard. Well, Buddur then took his van key from his pack lid and put it in buddur’s teeth and said “ you run on back to the van an get the water filter and that sack a tent stakes from that bin in the back.” Ol’ buddur took off an round half hour later he was back with the gear. Well, the judges, Lizs, LyndyS and Aero, was thinking it was pretty much a tie then. They figured they go over to Phil’s tent and get his opinion beins he is the wisest man in all the TT. When they got on over there, Phil was sittin in his tent playin checkers with Sarabelle. They was both the picture of concentration and didn’t barely here the group come up. Well, Lizs let out a chuckle and says, “I reckon we now know who is the smartest trail dog.” Phil looked up at lizs and says “Aw, she isn’t that smart. Why, I already beat her three games outta five.””
