Splinter(s) In The EyeView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 33 of 33 messages posted.
Yes...Splinters “While working yesterday, I was hit by a "projectile" which left particles in my left eye. That dang thing felt like someone punched me in the eye. I hurt so bad when I blinked that had to grab my eyelid and sretched it out as far as it could. I rushed to the First Aid Statio, but was too blind to see any eyewash, so I headed to the bathroom because theres an eyewash sink that shoots water up and into the eyes. Well the darn thing didn't work...not enough water pressure. I looked around, found and turned off the water to the toilet and urinal, and that didn't work. I found out that it was connected to the sink, but (found out today) the cold water had been turned off because it was leaking. Ugh! Frankly the water just irritated my eyes. I had to hold my eyelid out the whole time, while trying to see if there was anything in there. Finally I got a chunk out. Anywho... This was just before lunch. Since I've scratched my eye before, I knew that a scratch would irritate for a while. Well, for the next few hours, I kept feeling like there was something else in there, but then the feeling would go away. Then the feeling would come back, then go away. I ended up ging to an optometrist after work (4 hours after it happened) to find out there were 2 splinters still in the area...one in my eye and the other in the underside of my eyelid. Doc said, by the way they held when he pulled them out that they were going nowhere and most likely wouldn't've worked themselves out. Of course, when I told my foreman that I wanted to have my eye checked out, all I got was, that "...it's probably just irritated and all..." The kicker is...that I was wearing safety glasses with side shields when it happened. Why do freak accidents only happen to freaks?” 2:25:14 PM 8/07/02 “It looks like you've been taking your turn in the hopper man. I've taken more than a few turns myself.” 2:28:09 PM 8/07/02 “I think a more relevant question is "Why do lawsuits happen to irresponsible companies?"” 2:28:15 PM 8/07/02 “That's apropos!” 2:30:51 PM 8/07/02 “Speaking of freaks - my boss shot himself in the eye with a nail gun. On the way to the emergency room he stopped for a burger so when he got there they couldn't work on him right away because he had just eaten. By the way - bummer about your eye.” 2:31:24 PM 8/07/02 “yeeeouch! that sounds unpleasant. that happened to my dad too, are you calling him a freak?? ;-) he also took a big swig of beer once from a bottle with a broken-but-still-barely-hanging-on neck and got a bunch of glass lodged in his throat. eeek!” 2:39:11 PM 8/07/02 What did you just call me? “I got KOH (potassium hydroxide, very caustic) splashed in my eyes at work once. My boss was better about it but I still had to drive myself to the emergency room. Ever try to drive with chemical burns on the inside of your eyelids? It sucks.” 4:18:30 PM 8/07/02 I thought this was going to be Mat 7:5 “ Bad luck Buddur! I was standing next to a friend at a 4th of July party when he lobbed an M-80 into the middle of the lawn about 50' away. Talk about freak accidents - a piece of glass (no, there were no beer bottles in the target area) flew straight back and hit him squarely in the eye. When he doubled over and grabbed his eye, I thought he was fooling around until I saw the blood. I was able to keep him from going too far into shock while help arrived. They ended up airlifting him out but his eye was too messed up to save. He now has a pretty good prosthetic. To literally add insult to injury, the property owner (who happened to be politically connected) had the police charge him with illegal fireworks possession so that he couldn’t get sued. For some reason, I don’t really enjoy private fireworks the way I used to. Careful with your eyes kids!” 4:26:19 PM 8/07/02 “Buddur, Hope your eye is feeling better. Really weird accident considering you were wearing glasses. I was target shooting with a friend of mine once out in the woods and he wasn't wearing shooting glasses. He was using a Ruger .22 semi auto pistol. While shooting a small splinter of metal shot back, right into his eyeball and was sticking straight out of the white part of his eye. It looked like a piece of the slide off the gun. I pulled it out with a tweezers and he went to an eye doctor later, but everything turned out OK. I guess that's why they tell you to wear glasses when firing a gun.” 4:57:30 PM 8/07/02 “That sucks, hope it gets better.. considering sueing?” 5:12:21 PM 8/07/02 “Where I work if you do not have your saftey glasses on and you get hurt you are SOL! 8) Always have your safety glasses on at all times! 8D” 6:45:42 PM 8/07/02 “When it rains it pours, hope it heals quick. BTW I got your call the other day, sorry I was out...” 6:53:50 PM 8/07/02 “Really sorry, Buddur. I hope that your luck changes in a big way now.” 8:26:06 PM 8/07/02 Dang It “I'm a lefty now (left handed)... Accidentally cut off my right hand earlier tonight. Hope it grows back!” 9:39:11 PM 8/07/02 “Holy Shi! 8o” 9:41:07 PM 8/07/02 I Cannot Tell A Lie “I really didn't cut off my hand. I just figured what with my luck of getting hurt and all lately that...well...oh, nevermind.” 9:42:53 PM 8/07/02 “We knew what you meant. But now that you have dared the evil spirits, stay away from saws, swords, ninjas, that sort of thing.” 9:47:33 PM 8/07/02 “I hope you get it checked out by a pro. You only get two.” 9:48:11 PM 8/07/02 “Well then you better give Rosey a rest tonight!!!” 9:49:02 PM 8/07/02 “What the fock Buddur....you waited 4 hours before going to see a doctor? The eyes are the 2nd most important organ in your body. Take care of them. The most important organ is used for reproduc...oh, never mind.” 11:05:10 PM 8/07/02 “Man, that totally sucks! My eyes hurt just reading that! Hope you'll be OK soon!” 11:19:19 PM 8/07/02 “Is there going to be an OSHA investigation about the non working eye wash stations. Good thing you had you safety glasses on! Do you look like Cap'n Blye (sp) now?” 11:41:31 PM 8/07/02 Itchy And Scratchy “I swear I still have smething in there. I told my foreman that yesterday, and that I'll give it a few days to reconfirm my suspicion, and if I still feell that way I'm goinf back to the optometrist. The way he said (again) "It's probably just scratched and irritated.", he gave me the feeling like he either didn't think there was anything else or that he just didn't want me to go to the op. Heck I was right the first time when he didn't believe anything was in my eye. And I still think something is in there. Guess I'll Wait till tommorrow.” 4:28:21 AM 8/08/02 “Buddur, be very careful not to scratch or rub near your eye. I had surgery for a detached retina, and I didn't know that after several days you still need to be hands off. I went to bed without the eye patch, and must have rubbed my eye in my sleep. I woke up in the morning to find that my eye was totally purple and black. I freaked and went to the eye surgeon, and he said that after surgery or injury, the blood vessels in the area are filled, for healing and immune system, and to rub it causes an ugly bruise. So yes, it will be itchy scratchy for a while, but you still could find that something was missed at the first doctor visit. Hopefully not, but it is possible.” 5:42:11 AM 8/08/02 “The good news is the eye is the fastest healing part of the body. Hope it gets better, Buddur.” 6:03:51 AM 8/08/02 “You have scratch the cornea of the eye. It will feel as if something is still in there for about week. If it last longer than a week you probably still have something in there. I would wear a patch over it in the mean time to keep you from rubbing it. BTW Optometrist are not Dr.'s and thus should not be addressed as one. If there is something still in there you can try to snare the splinter with the cotton fibers of a Q tip provided you have not been rubbing it. The more you rub the worse it can get. It may work its way out to a point that you can get it with the Qtip. I had a metal shaving get ladge in my eye when I was younger. I had to go see a 'eye doctor' who used a little burring device to burr the little metal shaving out of my cornea.” 6:16:26 AM 8/08/02 I Knew It“I could feel something was still in my eye, but waited a few days to see if maybe the feel would go away (if it was just an after-irritation). The feeling never went away, so I went back to the optometrist today. The first thing he said when he looked at my eye with his mad scientist lookinattheeyethingymajig was "Wow, it's all scratched up, there must be something in there!" Took him alot of prodding and a while to spot it, but he pulled out a splinter an 8th of an inch long. My eye felt better the moment he extracted it. 8)” 1:29:53 PM 8/09/02 Ouch1 “Hopefully that's all there was.” 1:32:16 PM 8/09/02 “It may be important in the future to mention this incident if you ever go in for an MRI. I've heard that welders can't have MRI's because almost all of them have some metal in their eyes.” 1:34:12 PM 8/09/02 “I got a grain of sand stuck in my eye once. Had to get it extracted by the opthamologist. That was painful enough. I can't imagine a splinter.” 1:35:01 PM 8/09/02 “Oh GOD that would be painful! Getting it pulled on by a giant magnet. We had a kid get killed around here by an oxygen bottle left in an MRI room. Very sad.” 1:36:23 PM 8/09/02 “I heard about that incident HPM. Made it into the national news, I think. There was another one with a cop going into the MRI room with his gun on. Of course, the MRI field yanked it out of his holster. I can't remember if it discharged or not though.” 1:38:35 PM 8/09/02 “Heartbreaking. A kid with a rare disease gets treated by an experimental procedure with a high failure rate comes through fine and dies due to a case of extreme stupidity.” 1:41:13 PM 8/09/02
