Stream of drool trails from corner of mouth.****” 1:00:39 PM 8/09/02 “LOL. okay we should ease up on Artex, he's making a noble effort here.” 1:01:49 PM 8/09/02 “larkwoods - You know that western civilization was built on coffee. What are ya, some kinda commie?” 1:02:25 PM 8/09/02 “****Hyperventilating subsides, normal color returns to face.****” 1:02:52 PM 8/09/02 “MMMMMMmmmmm...goooooooodddddddddd ”1:03:22 PM 8/09/02 “You'll be okay Artex. (Anybody got a wild boar to keep this kid occupied for a couple hours?)” 1:04:10 PM 8/09/02 “AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGH!!! Okay, that's it!! I'm not looking at this thread anymore!!! Where's that boar, dagnabbit?!?! Hey Geobeet, I may be going on another boar hunt the week before Thanksgiving. If we get one, I'll be sure to bring up some of the meat, which I'd of course be more than happy to share. It'd make a great meal on the trail!” 1:10:18 PM 8/09/02 “Wow, just wanted some advice on making coffee and got 56 posts in two days! This place is great!” 1:11:19 PM 8/09/02 How to make coffee “Read the directions on the can!” 1:12:17 PM 8/09/02 “Well you asked about a critical piece of gear, you know!” 1:15:07 PM 8/09/02 that tears it “next extended hike, going to see goretex” 1:21:41 PM 8/09/02 “Coffee in the backcountry... I have to have my coffee in the morning. And being in the wilderness makes it all the better. I put a lil bit of high-grade Dark roasted espresso roast in a small 1/4 baggie. Then I mix sugar and creamer in another 1/4 baggie. I heat of water, pour in into my Big Sky french press (press and coffee mug in one). Coffee comes out pretty damn good.” 3:38:35 PM 8/09/02 “You know, I think we've misunderstood this thread "Coffee on the Trail". I have never seen it!” 4:37:40 PM 8/09/02 “Stopit, just stopit Pathman 3billy goats gruff is a slacker There's no leaving here in this hole with all the worms and people pulling their hair out. French toast I tell you!” 4:43:46 PM 8/09/02 “I am NOT an addict, I am just passionate about my coffee. I bought a lexan french press to take on trail with me this summer and I LOVE it! I am somewhat of a coffee snob so only buy beans whole from a co-op now. I brought a bag of Organic Sumatran beans this week and was in heaven. I like to get up early, heat some water, and sit and drink my coffee by myself or maybe with one other person and chat before anyone else gets up. Good times. I am very willing to carry the extra bulk and weight for a quality cup of coffee in the morning, and sometimes in the afternoon and evening too. Coffee single bags are yucky! They have instant coffee inside them! Blech! *Warning! Social Cause Ahead!* I urge you all to buy Fair Trade, Organic, Shade Grown coffee beans. It is much better for the environment, the growers actually get paid a fair price for the beans, and the quality is better. If you have questions about Fair Trade organic, shade grown, go to a local coffee shop or co-op and you'll probably find a nut like me to talk with for hours. Peace, wisdom, and strong and bitter coffee, SP” 5:07:05 PM 8/09/02 “how can coffee be "bad" for me?? i'm not seein it.” 5:07:51 PM 8/09/02 “First choice - One-cup filter with ground Colubian coffee. I like it strong. Really hits the spot in the morning and evening. Ultralight second choice - Folgers coffee bags.” 7:48:31 PM 8/09/02 “And a little Khalua / Grand Marnier, for that after dinner Monte Cristo cup Ahhhhh.... now that's campin' !!!” 7:55:31 PM 8/09/02 “go to Google groups: http://www.google.com/grphp look under alt.coffee and do a search on "camping". You'll find lots of ideas there.” 8:27:27 PM 8/09/02 “I just place a coffee filter over the cup and secure it with a rubber band, leaving a little depression in the middle. Put the coffee grounds in the middle and just pour hot water through it. When done just remove the filter and grounds. Worked well enough for me all season and ultralight too.” 8:39:35 PM 8/09/02 “strong and black...” 8:45:10 PM 8/09/02 Float stick “when ya' make cowboy coffee just drop a de-barked stick, shorter than the diameter of the pot, right in the boiling coffee. it breaks up the surface tension of the water/coffee and all the grouds will stay on the bottom. I've used this trick for 30 years and it works! I carry a short piece of dowel rod.” 11:43:13 AM 8/10/02 cold water “I don't want any wood chips in my coffee. Cold water drizzeled over a pot of coffee sinks the grounds like dirt. Ok, bad analogy, but it works.” 4:01:03 PM 8/10/02 “Coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee coffee makes some people happy, some people grumpy. La,la,la,la,la....” 5:15:36 PM 8/10/02 One word LyndyS “Decaffinated.” 5:29:50 PM 8/10/02 “The bad thing about coffee is more than 1 cup per day can contribute to bone loss. It has something to do with leaching calcium from your body through the kidneys.” 7:04:33 PM 8/10/02 “Ohhhhh oooookaay! decaf, decaf, decaf, decaf...” 7:36:16 PM 8/10/02 “OK, Here is the word about bone loss from caffeine right from my bone density test. Use of 2 or more cups of coffee or tea daily: Caffeine in these products increases calcium loss from the kidney. Oxylate, a substance found in tea, binds calcium in the intestine, reducing it's absorption. These actions promote osteoporosis by increasing calcium loss from the body. For women, it's a pretty good reason not to go overboard with caffiene, if you intend to hike into old age.” 7:59:08 PM 8/10/02 “I sweeten my caffine with Caltrate.” 8:02:54 PM 8/10/02 “Well I would like to do a lot of things into old age, so I guess I need to cut back. Again. It is a good thing I never smoked cigarettes.” 8:08:40 PM 8/10/02 “coffee...aaarrgh! decaf, decaf, decaf,decaf..” 6:12:43 AM 8/11/02 “Good morning Lyndy. Lovely day isn't it?” 6:14:54 AM 8/11/02 “Yes, yes it is. I'm trying to make notes to plaster all over my alarm clock to remind me to get up to see the Perseids.” 6:21:31 AM 8/11/02 “What is the best time tonight? 2-4?” 6:28:30 AM 8/11/02 “Never mind - I just read nowslimmer's post on the Persied Meteor Shower thread.” 6:29:38 AM 8/11/02 Dutch Coffee Concentrate “I learned about this method from a friend. You soak (Good Coffee) grounds in (Cold) water for 24 hrs. Then strain through cheesecloth into a container and keep refrigerated. Then add 1 tblspoon of concentrate or so to a cup of boiling water. Adjust cold water amount and coffee to taste. This keeps out most of the oils I think which is the part of coffee that's hard for your body to proccess and don't do much for the taste I guess. The thing I don't know is how long the mixture will last unrefrigerated. Need to test this out. No need for filters and grounds. A pint of this stuff could go along way.” 3:37:44 PM 8/11/02 “On my last trip out I bought some of the Folgers single cup coffee maker disks. These things are the best cup I’ve ever had hiking. I’ve used the coffee bags and the four cup coffee filter packs but they always tear my gut up and are just nasty. These things made a cup that was strong (2 little disks per 16 oz.), smooth and had great flavor. They also come in all kinds of flavors too.” 9:26:22 AM 9/14/04 “Do you use them the same way as the coffee bags?” 9:29:58 AM 9/14/04 “hmm, I have them at home to use for my coffee machine. (the seneco coffee machine does make the best coffee in the world). I haven't tried them on the trail yet. Great idea!” 1:31:24 PM 9/14/04 “I just throw them in when I put the water on and by the time it's boiling it's ready. If ya drink it black just keep them in the water as ya drink or fish them out to add the cream and sugar.” 1:35:37 PM 9/14/04 “I will be trying this in 2 weeks. I have wanted to buy a mini press to make fresh coffee on the trail, but didn't want to drag all kinds of extra stuff with.” 1:42:17 PM 9/14/04 “I find the mini presses are a hassle to clean and the coffee is a bit bitter. It always gives me sour stomach.” 1:44:36 PM 9/14/04 Flavors? “Like what? Vanilla? Sounds yummy!” 1:51:07 PM 9/14/04 “Vanilla, hazelnut, french roast, irish cream...” 1:52:24 PM 9/14/04 “yeah, the press makes good coffee to me, but the mess is too much trouble. I like the coffee bags, but this sounds like something I'd try.” 1:54:06 PM 9/14/04 “Skiracer bought me one of those basket-spoon-combo deals, and it works great. Some people have posted here in the past that they don't like them, but it makes a fine cup o' java IMO, and I'm pretty picky when it comes to coffee.” 3:38:16 PM 9/14/04 “Hey, how do you rate?” 3:39:15 PM 9/14/04 I need some! “I've been drinking General Foods instant. It turned to a rock last time I camped.” 6:56:56 PM 9/14/04 “I wish I could do instant. But not even with cream and sugar can I stomach it.” 7:01:12 PM 9/14/04 WHAT???????? “My grocery store don't carry no flavors.” 7:01:34 PM 9/14/04
