I use the Folgers singles tea bag type. Boil water, let steep. Works for me.

I've cut my coffee back to 2 8oz. cups a day and if I drink any after noon I'll be tossing and turning all night.

No wonder with two of the bags for one 16 oz. cup of coffee. You only need one bag.

I only use two bags on the trail and regular joe at home. I need the two bags when on the trail because I don't sleep well.

Gemini - I googled Seneco and it came up Saeco. Is that what you meant? I've had pretty reliable cars that cost less, lol.

Nigal,
Have you tried Tylenol PM before bed. It will put you down for the night. The sleep agent is something like benedryl.

I normally take Benadril or velarian root before bed fortified with a few beers. It's the shltty T-Rest UL pad but I hope to get one of those new Big Agnises soon.

Last year, for Christmas, I got an ultralite Thermarest. It's a wonderfull thing. Much better than the Ridge Rest I had been using. Your probably on the right tract.

I've been unsatisfied with my trail coffee. Typically I use the Folgers Singles. Then when I went with Gemini to California, she showed me the filter she used, which she said she had found at the grocery store. It's a lightweight plastic cone shape into which you put your cone filter and grounds. You just pour boiling water into it while you hold it over your coffee cup.

So I looked at my grocery store. And lo and behold, they had them. Made by Melita. However, the one I found also had a base built in that sits on the lip of the coffee cup so you don't have to suspend it over your cup while the water filters through. Best part is that it was $2.89. But if I bought the travel mug that was displayed next to it on the shelf that was on sale for $2.99, it had one of the plastic cones shrink-wrapped to the travel mug.

I think it's one of the cheapest pieces of gear I have bought in a while. :D

I've been making mine by cone drip for 20 years and always used paper filters. I recently use a gold filter in an a apt we rented, worked great. I'm going to get one of those and get rid of the paper mess on the trail

If you would please, further define: "gold filter."

A Gold filter is reuseable and is the color gold.

That's a good idea, Pathman. Less waste to pack out or burn. And they're pretty lightweight, aren't they?
Ruby

The gold filter is the only thing I use on the trail. I have had some of the best coffee ever on the trail. Of course I think some of it is the setting. We call Folgers "Floggers" here at work. I would rather deprive myself than drink that crap. I figure there is more ground up twigs that beans in it.

Is it like a little basket cup that goes inside your coffee cup or a cone thinggy?
BS

The deal I use is a seperate unit with a little removable "basket" in the bottom that you place the grounds in. The upper part acts like a funnel and the whole thing sits on top of your cup. It was pretty cheap at REI - maybe $5. One of my buddies has a press pot and I like this filter better.

Thanks for the info. I think I know exactly what you are talking about. I would post a picture from campmor if I knew how. I've been eyeing those types of filters and really didn't know if the paper filter or screen was better. I'm going with the screen now.

I have a mesh spoon I use to hold the grounds. Just the grounds in and snap ot shut, and swirl it a cup of hot water. Got it at REI years ago.

It's a lightweight plastic cone, just like on a regular coffee maker. It has a base that sits on the lip of your coffee mug. It's the same concept as an electric coffee maker, but you are just making one cup at a time instead of a whole pot.

Coffee is important to me. At home I use a freshly ground mixture of two parts Moka Jave dark and one part Arabica brown which I store in the freezer.

On the trail, however, I use el-Cheapo instant pre-mixed with Coffeemate in a plastic spice jar.

My
MSR Gold Filter

I do like that filter, but usually will have to add a paperfilter or I'll get all the coffee grinds.

my
other one

I don't like that one at all. and I have one
more
that one is okay, but I don't put my coffee in the little coffee compartment. I mean...it's too little...I use way more coffee than that anyway. I also have to use a filter with it cus i don't like the coffee grinds in my coffee.

The other day I went grocery shopping at BiLo and found the filter I am using now. It's perfect. if I don't want to I don't have to use paperfilters, it won't let any coffe grind thru at all. I do have to
hold it thou, which sort of is a little sucky [heehee]

I've owned and used just about all those gizmos for making trail coffee, but keep going back to the Maxwell House Coffee Singles 'tea' bags.

Not the very best coffee but simple and good enought with no messy gizmo to take up space and weight in my pack.

In the end, it's all about efficiently delivering the necessary caffeine to your body.

If you let those Folger's bags steep long enough, they ain't too bad.

I think i mentioned this before, but the little discs they make now for the home coffee presses work great. You can find them in all diff brands and flavors of coffee

ewww...... flavored coffee is NASTY.
I used to drink that stuff...now I don't know why!

I have those little disk for my coffee press, which btw the senecco [or however u spell it] is the best. it even gives you the little coffee foam [not sure how u call it, u know what i mean] on top of the coffee after breweing.

oh...this is a 'coffe on the trail' thread. no room for a coffee press. lol

Yea, I'm with Bit. Folgers singles are the way to go. I never met a cup of black coffee I didn't like. Just have to squeeze out the bags before you pack them out.

Thanks, IJ. I was eyeing those little disk thingys the other day and wondering how they would work on the trail. Do you just drop one in your hot water?

I just tried out those coffee rounds. I used the maxwell house brand. I let mine steep for about 7 minutes or so in my titanium pot, about 20-24 ozs of water, and it was great!! They don't have instant coffee in them like the bags. I just fished it out when I thought it was done. No need to bring a fancy schmancy coffee gadget on the trail anymore! I heard there were some different types, like aruba, but I havn't looked yet.

That's great for you margo, and great to hear about. I'm taking some coffee on my trip this week, and, if I understand you correctly, I'm using the round tea-bag like dunkers, originally made, though in my case, for a one-cup brewer. I'll fit one into the pot and steep it for a while, and then I'll have coffee. I only like coffee on freezing days, but did not ever get one of those trail-techno coffee makers 'cause of the expense per use and the weight. Good goin'

Thanks margo

And for anyone contemplating a $4 purchase of one of the coffee filter spoons. Spend it on a couple of energy bars. I wasn't impressed. Back to the idea of sewing up some Peets inside a filter.

As long as the coffe has caffien in it I don't much care on the trail. Easier is better in my opinion. I have found the capacino and Chia tea packets to be pretty darn good.

These ones are for more than just one cup, it says they make 4 to 6 cups of coffee. It worked will in a full snowpeak ti pot, about 24 ozs. It's pretty much just coffee with the filter around it. Not as economical as taking your own but a lot easier than carrying around extra filtering stuff.

I'm not above grounds in water, as long as I have some coffee in the morning. I can't believe it took so long to invent them! It's not that far of a technical leap from a tea bag?!

I'm so lame I take instant on the trail so I don't have to pack out the tea bags.

If all you want is caffeine get Jolt Energy gum. Two chicklets = caffeine in 1 cup of joe.

I carry a percolator and fresh ground if I want good coffee. I carry instant when I don't want to carry the percolator. The percolator doubles as a water boiler (for food) and it works well actually with it's aluminum body and tight fitting lid.

Mostly, however, I drink tea I should add on edit.
