Who brings music on the trail?View MessagesWho brings music? “I used to think it would be kinda phat to bring some headphones and a cd or two, but, when I was up last time I kinda realized, that that would be such a waste. Whatcha think?” 12:19:15 PM 8/09/02 “I prefer to listen to the woods. I don't have an issue with bringing an intrument though.” 12:24:28 PM 8/09/02 “i have nothing to say on this matter! while sitting at my deck or in my car humming away happily!! LOL” 12:25:00 PM 8/09/02 “Each to their own. Just so long as headphones are involved, I have no problem with people bringing tunes. I'll do my best to let you know if there's a bear walking up behind yas!” 12:26:01 PM 8/09/02 “What type of instrument would you bring humanPM?” 12:26:05 PM 8/09/02 “I used to play trumpet so that's a little too heavy to pack. I know some folks who bring stuff like guitars harmonicas and such. I agree Rosey.” 12:33:27 PM 8/09/02 not wierd “i love my tunes, but i wouldn't even consider on the trail. quiet time ya know. most of my choices aren't allowed in public places i also found out most places i go have an enforced noise ordinance. (even if i didn't drop and break it) my walkman is too loud for anyone nearby. REMEMBER: friends come and go but enemies accumalate” 12:38:46 PM 8/09/02 “What HPM said.” 12:42:20 PM 8/09/02 “Im normally to high to hear anything...” 12:42:38 PM 8/09/02 “And too stoned to say anything...” 12:43:23 PM 8/09/02 “But the colors are cool though...” 12:43:49 PM 8/09/02 “Sometimes I bring my harmonica.” 12:45:24 PM 8/09/02 “I love to sing, so, yeah I geuss that would count as an instrument.” 12:52:23 PM 8/09/02 “Most people tell me shutup when I do sing,But they told that to Mozart too.” 12:57:38 PM 8/09/02 “That's only cause be played the piano better than he sang.” 1:04:01 PM 8/09/02 “okay, we need to do a hike with larkwoods and bacpac, singing and playing the harmonica. Actually usually wish for some music like a harmonica or banjo for around the campfire. Being deaf in one ear, I gave up trying to play an instrument myself, but I love to listen.” 1:04:48 PM 8/09/02 “Hey, when Mozart was my age he'd been dead almost 4 years...” 1:05:31 PM 8/09/02 “I have a twin sis with a much better voice.” 1:07:46 PM 8/09/02 “So I guess you can play the piano better than Mozart could at your age.” 1:08:32 PM 8/09/02 “Hey don't put yourself down; unless of course you are a troll, in which case, have at it!” 1:09:32 PM 8/09/02 “Beethoven was stone deaf and it didn't stop him....” 1:12:39 PM 8/09/02 “Was he stone deaf from birth? That would be just unbelievable! How could he do the composing that he did?” 1:14:10 PM 8/09/02 “Yes but that was later in life. He could "hear" the vibrations by laying his head agaist the piano when composing. Where there is a will there is a way.” 1:14:55 PM 8/09/02 “I guess you are right. I found it frustrating in the past, but that doesn't mean that it can't be done.” 1:18:00 PM 8/09/02 “well i guess im the only one that does bring head phones on a trail. i listen to native american chants and thats the only music i bring. unless im car camping with the family then i like to bring a little radio for around the campfire at night. but i love the chants cause it makes me relax! (and makes me one with nature) wow i sound like an AD” 1:18:06 PM 8/09/02 “Like HPM said, he became deaf later in life, but well before the end of his productive composing career. I heard that he also would clench a stick between his teeth and put one end against the piano, to feel the vibrations that way.” 1:18:41 PM 8/09/02 “I probably would bring headphones but I know that I wouldn't use them so I won't lug the weight. I have no issue with those who do but it's just not my thing. Beethoven also removed all the carpets in his music room so they wouldn't absorb the vibrations and played REALLY LOUD. I bet his neighbors either loved the free concerts or hated him for working all night.” 1:23:27 PM 8/09/02 “Tunes on the trail? CDs, tapes, stereo speakers? You have GOT to be kidding. I lost all respect for Backpacker when they ran a $tory about lightweight speakers. Please folks, leave your noise in the city.” 1:23:49 PM 8/09/02 “For an aromatic evening of music around the campfire there's only one way to go. The lovely soul vibrating sounds of the butt-trumpet played in B (ean) minor "Beans beans, the magical fruit The more you eat, the more you toot The more you toot, the better you feel So have some beans toady and toot your blues away"” 1:34:45 PM 8/09/02 “naw i like the song they did in blazing saddles” 1:56:40 PM 8/09/02 “My CD player goes with me on all my trips. For me it is part of the expierience to match music with the area I'm in. Great way for me to keep a trail pace too. Need to go MP3 though, the weight/space issue. Off to a Joe Satriani concert now. Satch is GOD!” 6:39:18 PM 8/09/02 3 words...... “guitar GUITAR GEEEEEEEEEETAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHRRRERERRRRRR! ! ! !” 6:56:12 PM 8/09/02 “I take music about one time in four or five. I like music when I am truckin--not so much when I am lookin.” 7:20:28 PM 8/09/02 “I always take my mindisc player with me..I can listen to music..books on tape..or keep a recorded journal..The great thing about listening on the trail is when you hear a song later on it will totally remind you of that moment...Plus, when your on the trail a week or more it's nice to have a little entertainment...” 7:57:55 PM 8/09/02 “If I hear anyone "rapping" on the trail I'll THUMP them so hard it'll be the last thing they hear.” 8:11:30 PM 8/09/02 next solo trip “im takin a little cd player w headphones. hopin to get a mp3 player soon. been wantin one of those ones that straps to your arm for workin out. where's my secret pal?” 8:13:17 PM 8/09/02 “On solo trips I carry a radio with headphones to listen to NPR. There are a couple shows I love and its nice to stroll along and hear em.” 8:35:00 PM 8/09/02 “The only music I want to hear on the trail is tree frogs, cicadas and whipoorwills, etc...” 9:11:59 PM 8/09/02 “I take a little sports walkman radio and headphones. It allows me to pick up radio weather reports, listen to some tunes if I want. I normally don't. I've thought of getting a mouth harp.” 9:17:22 PM 8/09/02 “What Father Goose said.” 10:42:22 PM 8/09/02 father goose... “yer momma plays a whiporwhill!” 11:05:00 PM 8/09/02 “I'm an Alabama football freak and if there is a game going on, I have to be able to keep up with it. One trip that OPIE and I made to the Sipsey was during an Alabama vs. MSU game. There were several guys camping near us from Mississippi and every few minutes they were wanting us to keep them updated. I think they were thankful we had the walkman.” 11:13:37 PM 8/09/02 “Sometimes, hiding in the rocks near campgrounds, I can hear music from the campers. Mostly, I just try to listen for the soft sound of an enemy footfall in the night.” 11:46:15 PM 8/09/02 “HPM - Bring that trumpet on the next ONF trip and give us a revelrie! Wake-up troop! I was first opposed to taking anything with me - but lately I have been noodling taking a little am radio with an earpiece. Seen a bunch of longer distance b'pers with those. Good for weather reports too.” 6:08:40 AM 8/10/02 stratdewd... “LOL. Touche`, turtle!” 6:14:45 AM 8/10/02 “I prefer to find the music of the trail. That being said, I don't mind flutes, harmonicas, etc. They're very woodsy instruments and seem pretty appropriate. I won't let Sauron bring his cd player and headphones with him when we hike. It's really just defeating the purpose for being out there.” 7:14:45 AM 8/10/02 “i have considered getting one of those c-krane radios for weather reports on long hikes, cuz they have a solor panel & a wind-up crank that runs it for 30 minutes. then i was all.....NAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH” 10:54:10 AM 8/10/02 “It's really just defeating the purpose for being out there." Then maybe you should leave your pack, bag, clothes, and food home...and get ass naked one with nature...” 1:51:38 PM 8/10/02 “Coop I haven't played in years. Not only that, I prefer to just sleep.” 1:53:16 PM 8/10/02 “i brought a tiny mp3 player to montana and it had my top ten tunes on it.....i listened to it and danced a while around 3am one night when the moon was shinin on the rocks....and then at breakfast the next morning...i had a dance then too.....that was the only time i listened to it the whole time.......if it is sunday...i listen to chants in the morning........... for the most part, tho, while out there........"the hills are alive with the sound of music"!!” 1:18:34 AM 8/11/02
