Who brings music on the trail?

“I used to think it would be kinda phat to bring some headphones and a cd or two, but, when I was up last time I kinda realized, that that would be such a waste. Whatcha think?”

“I used to play trumpet so that's a little too heavy to pack.
I know some folks who bring stuff like guitars harmonicas and such.

“i love my tunes, but i wouldn't even consider on the trail. quiet time ya know.
most of my choices aren't allowed in public places
i also found out most places i go have an enforced noise ordinance.
(even if i didn't drop and break it) my walkman is too loud for anyone nearby.

“Yes but that was later in life. He could "hear" the vibrations by laying his head agaist the piano when composing.

“well i guess im the only one that does bring head phones on a trail.
i listen to native american chants and thats the only music i bring. unless im car camping with the family then i like to bring a little radio for around the campfire at night. but i love the chants cause it makes me relax!

“Like HPM said, he became deaf later in life, but well before the end of his productive composing career. I heard that he also would clench a stick between his teeth and put one end against the piano, to feel the vibrations that way.”

“I probably would bring headphones but I know that I wouldn't use them so I won't lug the weight. I have no issue with those who do but it's just not my thing.

Beethoven also removed all the carpets in his music room so they wouldn't absorb the vibrations and played REALLY LOUD.

“My CD player goes with me on all my trips. For me it is part of the expierience to match music with the area I'm in. Great way for me to keep a trail pace too.
Need to go MP3 though, the weight/space issue.

“I always take my mindisc player with me..I can listen to music..books on tape..or keep a recorded journal..The great thing about listening on the trail is when you hear a song later on it will totally remind you of that moment...Plus, when your on the trail a week or more it's nice to have a little entertainment...”

“On solo trips I carry a radio with headphones to listen to NPR. There are a couple shows I love and its nice to stroll along and hear em.”

“I take a little sports walkman radio and headphones. It allows me to pick up radio weather reports, listen to some tunes if I want. I normally don't. I've thought of getting a mouth harp.”

“I'm an Alabama football freak and if there is a game going on, I have to be able to keep up with it.

One trip that OPIE and I made to the Sipsey was during an Alabama vs. MSU game. There were several guys camping near us from Mississippi and every few minutes they were wanting us to keep them updated. I think they were thankful we had the walkman.”

“Sometimes, hiding in the rocks near campgrounds, I can hear music from the campers.

Mostly, I just try to listen for the soft sound of an enemy footfall in the night.”

I was first opposed to taking anything with me - but lately I have been noodling taking a little am radio with an earpiece. Seen a bunch of longer distance b'pers with those. Good for weather reports too.”

That being said, I don't mind flutes, harmonicas, etc. They're very woodsy instruments and seem pretty appropriate. I won't let Sauron bring his cd player and headphones with him when we hike. It's really just defeating the purpose for being out there.”

“i brought a tiny mp3 player to montana and it had my top ten tunes on it.....i listened to it and danced a while around 3am one night when the moon was shinin on the rocks....and then at breakfast the next morning...i had a dance then too.....that was the only time i listened to it the whole time.......if it is sunday...i listen to chants in the morning...........
